When I was in the Army I was stationed at the Presidio of Monterey. My barracks room was on the side of the building that looked down the hill toward the bay, and for a girl from Kansas this was great. I remember being able to hear the sea lions on a quiet night.

My parents were stationed there at Fort Ord Army base...we were neighbors of John Steinbeck and I remember falling asleep and waking up to the sound of the Sea Lions and Foghorn...
"Into the Mystic" and "It's So Quiet Here" by Van Morrison are songs I endear because of it...

People seeing things like this is wonderful on many levels.
So many species have been lost or cut to a small fraction of their populations. Just by virtue of when one is born, they may never watch thousands of lightning bugs transform a summer field into an enchanted land. Only one example.
People are more likely to protect that which they’ve experienced, and we as a species experience less of the natural world each year.

To:@@bcatblues725 - Ha, ha! Very true. I live by the River Tees in the UK. Part of the estuary is protected and is important both nationally and internationally for wildlife and is called Seal Sands. There are minor feeder-streams into the estuary which are crossed by roads. They are low-lying and have flat muddy banks. Almost every day at low tide and next to the road bridges the seals can be seen just lying 'sunbathing' on the banks till the tide comes back in.
