I teach slightly older (4/5 combo) and instead of a physical gift, each kid gets "Birthday Minutes" where they can choose an activity for the whole class to do together. This might be a read aloud of their favorite book, playing a game, a dance party, etc. There are limits (no screens, must be an activity that everyone can do, no food because of school policy), and I give them some possible ideas, but they are otherwise free to choose. It's free, a great community builder, and feels special to them!
Oh my goodness! It's a crossover episode 😊 Mrs Call & Mrs Katie in one video! My two favorites!!! ♥️ 🥰 this is one of your BEST videos. It's so helpful to see you access and evaluate! Love this. Thank you!!!
I retired in May, but I couldn’t resist watching your classroom set up since I have watched all of your other years. 😁 How wonderful to finally have the same room! I am enjoying the satisfaction of seeing the room come together without the stress of working on my own. ❤
I love that you don't have to put everything away! Even when we stay in a room we have to pack away EVERY SINGLE THING. It's so much work on both ends.
Haha I know that STINKS! My first school, all the teachers had to literally stack things against the wall in the hallway - completely empty their whole room. I was kind of glad I just had to put mine in a truck lol it was intense!
Been binging your videos lately!!! For birthdays, I write my kids a personalized card and leave it on their desk with a rubber “happy birthday” bracelet hanging on the corner of the card. A coworker of mine decorated a chair with puffy paint that just said “the birthday chair” or something and allowed the birthday kid to do all the junior teacher things that day (passing papers, delivering messages, etc)
This past year, I created a “Birthday Box” and went to the dollar store and put a lot of different things in it. When it’s a student’s birthday, they get a card and choose something from the birthday box. They can also choose to wear a crown ( editable ones I got from TPT). They really enjoy this! I teach first grade too, and love all your videos!
I give a birthday gift- I make a little gift bag with little party favor toys and I usually include a mini playdoh pot, fancy pencil (that they aren't allowed to use in school), and bookmark. I have a birthday bear that sits at their seat for the day that has been used for years, and one of their favorite things about the day. I make the birthday bags as part of my classroom setup each August so they are ready to go before school starts. I am very forgetful, especially about what day it is and can easily miss a student's birthday, but with everything ready to go, I never do!! I probably spend about $30-40 each year on the birthday bags, but some stuff lasts into the next year's birthday bags and extra pieces that aren't enough for a whole class set for another year go into my treasure box to help fill that out too.
For my birthdays, I would take pics of the kids the first day of school and enlarge just their head, print off and cut out. Then also on the first day of school I would have all kids decorate birthday crowns. It was good for name practice, etc. I would then put up their enlarged face pictures up above my white board (or someplace high where they could be in birthday order). Below their picture I would also put their birthdate. Finally, I would pin the crown above their enlarged head. I would pin it so it would pop out of the wall 3-D style. It was a good visual reminder for me and kids were always excited to wear their crown!
This video is making me excited to get back into my classroom this summer❤🎉 The cm rayon hotel is something I think I might do. Your videos always give me so much inspiration and motivation Mayleen so for that, I thank you ❤
I don’t usually give birthday gifts. I’m not consistent with it, and I don’t want to hurt a child’s feelings because I forgot about their birthday. This past year I did give a special pencil to each child for their birthday. I did miss a couple but made sure to do it when I remembered.
I don’t do birthday gifts, but we make a treat on each birthday (usually cupcakes, but sometimes different). Also have a birthday hat that some kids like to wear. I like someone else’s idea of “birthday minutes” and might try to incorporate that this year! Have to say, the little stuffies you shared are sooo cute and cheap and I know know know they would be a hit, so…maybe changing things up this year…
Honestly for birthday gifts I have stickers and then a bag full of just random bits. Things from the dollar tree, dollar spot, etc. and they just get to pick something from the bag so I just keep an eye out all year for inexpensive little things
I don't give gifts. We usual give them something at Christmas and the end of the school year. Instead, they get a birthday certificate and a birthday sticker.
I love these types of organization videos! Do you mind sharing more about your Animal Research and I am curious to know what reading series did your school select?
I definitely will! I want to make a short reel as well, so if you aren't following me on insta, hop over there so you don't miss it! For reading, our district chose HMH.
there should be like a free table for teachers. stuff that you don’t need can be put on the table for the other teachers to take if they need it or could use.
We are getting a new reading curriculum too! We were using Journey's and we are getting Amplify, both skills and knowledge. What curriculum did you get?
My daughter was a middle child didn’t struggle but wasn’t top of either but at her year 5 assessment here in uk her teacher failed her and there was no reason for it other than she could never get time with the teacher because she was always dealing with bottom and top students! If only she had taken so special time with her she wouldn’t have had to play catch up all year with extra maths and tutoring! Later found out she has a processing problem!!! Was totally missed untill it was nearly too late!
Love your white storage cabinet! Did the school provide this or did you purchase yourself? I checked your Amazon but did not see it, would love the link if so :) Thank you for all you do!
I so enjoy and learn SO much from your videos! I know you will not sell your labels, but have you ever thought about doing a RUclips tutorial for how to make them? I have searched and searched to no avail!
Depends! I try to base it off of what we are reading and our weekly poetry. I don't have a set amount of sight words I teach every week. I try not to randomly throw them in :)
Genuine question from a parent. Why do the supply list require so much if it seems like most teachers still have a lot of unused supplies from the past school year?
"Most teachers" is a stretch. Mayleen has a lot stored, but I don't, and I personally don't know anyone else that does. I never have enough of anything and often have to buy it myself or my kids go without. Parents never get anything on my supply list that we actually need, but will buy 10 different paper folders that will last a month, and spiral notebooks after I specifically asked them not to. I am very envious of Mayleen having everything she needs for her kids and plenty extra because that isn't the reality for anyone I know or myself. I spent at least $200 this year getting my students what they needed, very basics like scissors, glue and composition notebooks, and we STILL don't have everything. I asked parents to bring tissue and literally one parent brought ONE box of tissues that will last less than a week. Please don't make such rash assumptions about teachers and classrooms just because Mayleen has all the things. I am however glad that you're at least looking at the supply list your child needs and presumably getting the things on it, because I'm pretty sure most of my families didn't even look at the supply list even though I handed it them in-person, physically, during open house.
They go in little mini tupperware-looking containers haha! If you look at last year's classroom tour you will be able to see it! They stay in their table caddies with other materials
You'll see me in the workroom in the next video I think, but it's an extra classroom where we have printers, tables to work, and cabinets - so we can use it as storage!
I teach kindergarten and I don’t do presents for birthday girls. That seems like a lot! They get an award thing that says happy birthday and I post their picture on dojo saying it’s their birthday.
Totally random but look behind your teacher area where you put your decodeables....I think you have a set of orange words on a ring 🤷🏻♀️ . Remove the container and it's way back there. Lol
umm...It would be cheaper for elementary and lower grades, but secondary grades? Nope. No gifts. I put their birthdays on my lesson PowerPoint (it stays up all week) and we say Happy Birthday. I refuse to afford 120+ gifts for teens. lol...

That sounds fun. How much time do you give them? Do you wait until the end of the day?

I’m so happy it’s 2 new videos! I was watching your last year vlogs, honestly it helps me so much! ❤
New one tomorrow too!
Today was my first day back at work and I did the same thing, organize and put items out. Have a great school year.
Productivity at its finest! Have a great year!

oooh, you should give it a try! Thank you for always commenting! I love seeing what you liked!
I usually give birthday pencils with the cupcake eraser on the top but this year, we just sang! The school where I’m at gives birthday books.
Definitely read "Greenlights" Matthew McConaughey book. One of the best audiobooks I've ever read!
A coworker of mine does “party animals” for their birthday. It would be cute with your little plushes!

Congrats on a great year and not having to move!!🎉 so awesome to kind of “know” where you want and what you want all the “things”!☺️
Yaay, fellow Vegas teacher
HEY! 🥰🫶🏻
I’m teaching k/1 this year. I have never given birthday gifts .🤷♀️. LOVE my kids but birthday songs and acknowledgment is plenty❤️
Great job with everything, I would have loved to have you as a teacher. Remember the summer Birthdays!! I would always celebrate my half Birthday 🎉

I enjoyed Rob. Lowe‘s autobiography is on audiobook.

Just seeing this: I give my students a snack they can eat in class for their birthday. I teach high school, they're always hungry!
Love the organization! Thank you for sharing:) curious… what reading curriculum did your district adopt?

This is my favorite comment 🤣

So off topic, but what is your lipstick and liner? It looks subtle but pretty! 5:10
THANK YOU! I keep this set in my classroom so I'll check and let you know tomorrow haha!
love your videos: what font did you use for the drawers?
I forgot 2 add that I do a classroom birthday card for each student.
Printer recommendations? And your wedding ring is beautiful 😍
Do you have a link for the brochure? Thank you!
I just give them a pencil with a cool eraser for their birthday.
Do you do paper copies of everything or digital? :)
This will be my first year giving Birthday gifts too🤣
look at us, doing the things! haha
Ma’am! Where is your adorable dress from from the first day?
Hi Mayleen!! How do you distribute your crayons? I love the tool box with the crayons separated.
They go in little mini tupperware-looking containers haha! If you look at last year's classroom tour you will be able to see it! They stay in their table caddies with other materials
When you say you’re taking things to teacher work room, do you have a storage unit? or are those things to give away?
You'll see me in the workroom in the next video I think, but it's an extra classroom where we have printers, tables to work, and cabinets - so we can use it as storage!
Slayyyyyyy
You could use stamps for his who behave well at morning meeting
How did you learn how to make all your labels at the correct size??
just measuring in real life, then making the labels to size in PPT!
Are your labels for sale?
I teach kindergarten and I don’t do presents for birthday girls. That seems like a lot! They get an award thing that says happy birthday and I post their picture on dojo saying it’s their birthday.
I'm curious. Is she using low temp hot glue for the labels on the plastic bins?
I'm using normal hot glue lol
Do you sell your drawer and supply labels?? I neeeeeed!!
Nooooo I am so sorry!!!!!
Hi! We you share where you got your dress?
TJ Maxx!
It is adorable! Thank you!
Do you offer a template for your trifold Meet the Teacher?
Totally random but look behind your teacher area where you put your decodeables....I think you have a set of orange words on a ring 🤷🏻♀️ . Remove the container and it's way back there. Lol
hahah okay I'll take a peek next time. probably something super random
Lol! Saw those, too!
Please tell me where did you get your rug??
If you're referring to her giant leaf rug, she got it from Lakeshore.
@@animecookies8784Thank you☺️

@MrsCallsCampers lol. Oh definitely. Candy works. Those kids go crazy for some candy! Lol
@@TheAngryTeacher someone else also posted another comment idea for older kids that's free!
Organizing is hard and always takes longer than you think. A lot of decision making.
this is very true!
