"Punching, striking and kicking are not the only methods in karate. Throwing techniques and submission holds are included. All these techniques should be studied in basic kata." - GICHIN FUNAKOSHI (1868-1957)
I trained from the age of 6, studying Shotokan. I won the British National Championships in 1992. I'm now 43 and done many dangerous things in the service of my country and protecting people. It has saved my life many times! I found the best defence for a knife attack is to run! If you cannot and you have chance, take your coat off or shirt and rap it around your hand.
Trained from 72 to 80 . Still hit my Maki board at age 78.Gets the breathing going and just like to know I can still punch hard If anyone wants to deprive me of my pension.lol
Depends who's teaching you, my Sensei's trained in Judo (as a young boy) did wrestling in high school, then Shotokan Karate (4th Degree Black Belt) , then a Black Belt in Kickboxing. He isn't a lame Sensei, he incorporates everything he's learned into Karate but of course maintaining it as Shotokan Karate. But he makes us spar often, which lacks in most Karate schools. The reason it seems "fishy" or "pre-arranged" you get used to the moves before condoning it in a sparring match. Sometimes we do point sparring or full contact sparring depending on the class and circumstances and what we need to learn. And indeed, sparring is key, I'll agree with you on that. If your Karate Sensei barley makes you spar, you should get out of there.. (After I finish Shotokan to the best of my ability, gonna do Kickboxing and do more BJJ, which I do some BJJ after Karate classes, since my area has, Shotokan, Kickboxing and BJJ in one Dojo/Facility.)
It's weird to me why people think Karate isn't effective for defense. It's like boxing but fancier. That's how I perceive it. Before I ever did Karate, I couldn't through a punch for the life of me. After attending Karate classes achieving my Green Belt. I was able to throw a variety of accurate strikes extremely fast and snappy. And was able to efficiently block and break out of holds such as choke holds, death grips, and weapon disarming. Karate has definitely helped me in the criminal justice sector. I do private security and we are often unarmed, so my martial arts training has really helped a lot. Both with combative training and confidence in protecting people. Thrust punches are my favorite, most direct, fast, and quick way to end a deadly encounter with a criminal.
i think its because the general public never see the more advanced techniques and in practice everything is done slow and methodical, and in a real fight people dont punch like they do in karate kata, i do believe some martial arts will not be any use in the real world, but equally there are others that will be effective but at the end of the day it still comes down to the practioner.
The Karate punch is like an iron bar wham, where as a Jeet kune do punch is like an iron chain with an iron ball attached to it and it goes waang. And is more destructive.
Those old sensei where tough, tougher then todays bull shit martial arts which todays is mma Today its about money, no honor in that. MMA isnt a martial art its a sport.
@@jason75 Ok, so if you really believe that , which I dont think you do, then why don't you go to a legit MMA gym and put out a challenge against a professional fighter. Anything goes except eye gouging. Get it on video and post it for everyone to see. Karate is decent for self defense IF it's practiced full contact with resistance and pressure tested. Problem is that the vast majority of karate schools are badly watered down and spar light contact to prepare for goofy light contact tournaments (which develop dangerous habits). The most effective striking art in the world is authentic Muay Thai.

I learn deadly techniques before I reach black belt.some of it I learn it on my own because I hate waiting when they will going to teach something new because I am confident that I already have the necessary skills for a black belt level.

So many of you speak non-sense: "...pre-arranged, not effective, rigid, unnatural...." Go and learn MMA, Craw Maga or better join a fighting club in some tough neighborhood. Those are the real-deal! Good, strong and very effective street fighting systems. Don't waste time on something that you cannot comprehend but above all you should not show stupidity commenting about an incredible art-form which, the ultimate goal, you don't know anything about.....
krav maga for real life situations. you should watch the krav maga course the israeli army uses. it's built to be unfair, only way to pass is to fight dirty and make any and everything a weapon. you see 5 against 1 situations, still havent seen a good outcome on video for that one but i suppose it shows you wh as t can happen if seperated from your squad
The Taekwon Do (Jidokwon style no longer practiced in S. Korea, I suspect) that I took in South Korea so long ago (1969) is not today's Taekwon Do. It was like Japanese Shotokan Karate. And it was certainly not S. Korean Hapkido that uses lots of joint-locks often with associated throws as well as their own types of kicks, punches, and strikes. I have largely modified my martial art into something else discontinuing Kata (stylized or choreographed fight "dancing") and added some Hapkido joint-locks & throws, modified my fighting style a lot (vertical-fist punching instead or horizontal-fist for a long-distance punch to keep my elbow close to my body for more power ... no knife-hand finger jabs that can injure my fingers ... using ducking & dodging a lot instead of standing straight up to punch and block but mostly hard-blocking as a type of attack to opponents arm to cause him pain and momentary disorientation or sweeping-block to measure my distance for a counter-attack ... raising my knee very high to do a forward or side kick making my foot sort of come downward in a stomping even sideways or upwards as in high or medium kicks ... and ferocious sudden attacks or counter attacks and etc etc etc. And I often don't even use a fighting stance but just to stand relaxed before defending or attacking with ferocity. That's me doing the flying kick.
Love this style
