NBA Stars Are TRICKING Their Own Teams...

  • Over the past decade, NBA free agency has become the biggest and most EXCITING part of the offseason… going back the multiple LeBron decisions, KD going to the Warriors, and the INSANE summer of 2019… free agency was the main tool used by teams and players to completely change the landscape of the league overnight.
    But that isn’t really the case anymore. We are entering a NEW era in the NBA… and if you weren’t paying close attention, you might not have noticed it at all… one where stars making moves in free agency hasn’t actually happened in YEARS.
    And the reason for that of course… is money.

    The NBA may want to try to implement a rule that a super max player can’t be traded until there is like one year left on their contract or something. It will make teams think hard about if they actually want a specific player long term. Some teams right now are simply locking up players on super max contacts with the mindset that they will just figure it out later (e.g. Bradley Beal). Also it will make the player think long and hard about if he wants to be on a certain team long term. Or perhaps there could be a contract clause that reduces a players super max to just a regular max if they get traded.

      Nah, if I’m giving up assets I want to make sure they aren’t 1 year rentals. The more years the better. If you really want to fix the problem just make it so there can only be 1 super max contract player on the roster and make a new contract that pays a 10% plus a max for players who meet the criteria for a super max but there is already a super max on the team. We could call it a plus level max contract. Teams will only be able to have 1 super max and 1 plus max on the roster.
      1. You won’t see players leaving to join other super max players because they can’t.
      2. We can still see a lot of player movement still but based more on team decision because they have to be more selective on who they give their only super max to.
      3. More parity in the league and a level playing field for small market team as every team will have more of less the same structure. 2 superstars and role players. If a player is worthy of a super max but their team doesn’t agree the player could go to a bad team to receive a plus max or the super max accelerating that teams rebuild. We could legit see a league where every team has a chance to make the playoffs.

      Bad idea, if a team signs a player to a 4 year max and can't trade him till the final year, if things go south, that's a 3 year ballast on your books that you can't move off from. No trades swing both ways, it stops stars from requesting trades, but also stops teams from trading star players if they think there's a better deal out there.

    • @johnl8634
      @johnl8634 Год назад +2

      My idea may not be perfect, but it forces both the franchise and the player to make a more well thought out decision on if the supermax is worth being together for 5 years. Or you could implement my other idea instead and have a clause in the contract that reduces the supermax to just a normal max if the player tries to be slick and request a trade after getting their supermax.

    • @codycomer4623
      @codycomer4623 Год назад +2

      My thought was: make all supermax deals automatically have a no trade clause (that the player can waive) but if the player gets traded the contract loses the extra “supermax” money and goes down to a regular max.
      My thought was this protects the player from losing massive $ against their wishes, but also protects teams from players signing just to get paid and immediately demanding a trade, plus gives the player a reason to stay with the team.
      And as you said, it would force teams to be way more thoughtful and judicious about giving out a supermax rather than just slapping it on everyone that gets eligible.

    Players basically want to eat their cake and have it too. In other words - get as maximum amount of money from their incumbent team and then cherry pick where to go next by requesting a trade. And the sad part is this is seen as just another day in the office. The supermax contract was the biggest mistake the league ever made. On paper it was "meant" to help small market teams to have some leverage when it comes to keeping their star players, but instead it does the exact opposite - it jackknifed the ability of teams like Portland or Washington to built competitive rosters around their star players. Granted, this could also be blamed on incompetent frant offices, but in all honesty what are the supposed to do when nearly a 1/3 of the cap is used to pay your franchise player.
    The inmates are running the asylum for years in the NBA to the point of being practically irreversable.

    I think that a player on a supermax that gets traded must have a penalty on his guaranteed payment, like say 5% for every month that contract is spent with a team that did not start the contract, while the destination team's cap hit remains the same as if the contract is still paid in full.
    I think that will make players think twice about signing and then requesting a trade 1-2 years later

  • @fpl_djhammer

    the only way to combat this is to implement new "trade kickers" imo (not sure if this EXACT one exists)
    if a star signs a contract (supermax or otherwise) and requests a trade within 1 year, he will lose 40% of his new salary (year 2: 20% and year 3: 10%)
    we can argue the exact number (but it's just an example)
    teams that trade for him must still match the annual salary
    eg
    - Beal earns $50m in Year 1 and requests a trade
    - the trade package of the Suns must treat him as a $50m asset
    - BUT he will be paid only $50m × 60% in Year 1 by the Suns
    - remaining $20m is paid by Suns to NBA (?)

And has to be evaluated by a direct NBA league doctor to see if he’s actually capable of playing or not. I would say like if they miss 5 games just to sit out for contract issues or not feeling like being there they should be eligible for only 50 percent of their salary. because even in a regular job if you miss 3 days for no reason most jobs will terminate you. Every supermax deal should come with a clause stating that they can not request a trade unless they are 1/2 way through their contract (pretty much a no trade clause with stipulations). One of the stipulations is if a player requests a trade a year after they sign a supermax they can grant the players wish to be traded but they have to pay 10% of the contract to waive the no trade clause. Oh, and one more stipulation If a player does pay the fine to get traded, there should be at most a 5 game suspension for breach of contract.
    The name of this clause should be called "The Running From Grind Rule"

  • @michaeljones7447
    @michaeljones7447 11 месяцев назад +1

    This is the opposite of a problem. The amount of money a player can make on the free agency market hasn’t changed, players have the same freedom of mobility they had throughout the 2010’s. Home teams getting the option to pay extra just means more possible money for the players. Making one option better doesn’t make the other worse, even if comparison makes it feel that way.
    And honestly, I love the parity this change has created for the league. If a big-market team wants a championship, now they actually have to earn it by being smart with their assets. No more drafting one star and expecting two or three others to just show up and sign.

    What's worse is nba players are negotiating for trade kicker I.e there contract increases in value after a trade, only to then request a trade in order to revive the extra money.
    Pretty fucking obvious why this is a dumb idea too me.

    @alnoutbreak Год назад

    The problem is that there is no reprecussion to not playing. If a player refuses to play they should immediately lose their money and he banned from the nba for the duration if the contract they signed and are refusing to honor x2. You sign a 4 year supermax and demadlnd a trade and refuse to play for the team that is paying you after one year, you lose all of the money peft on your contract and are banned from the nba for 6 years. The punishment should be so severe that no one wants to deal with it.
    This started primarily with Kawhi and the spurs. A player should not ve allowed to refuse contact with their employer and should be required to share medical information if they are claiming a medical reason to sit. Spurs should have been able to write his contract off and spend that money elsewhere while kawhi sits at mcdonalds thinking about why he shouldnt act like a child.

    The owners need to stop this “player empowerment” bs. There should be penalties for asking for a trade and there should be a stipulation that if a trade request is granted the max goes down to what the maximum would’ve been when they signed it if they wouldn’t have signed with that team.

    When a player with a supermax leaves the team he signed the contract with, the contract should revert to a regular max contract. It's the only fair way

    Portland should have traded Dame a year ago. Now they're screwed. And Dame is a total hypocrite. The league should retract the contracts when players sign extensions and then ask for a trade. Or fine players ridiculous amounts if they ask for a team specific trade. Adam Silver is ruining the league.

    If a player signs a contract for 5 years on a quarter of a billion dollars then requests a trade a few months or a year later then a year should drop off of that contract.
    Back the players all you want but this is a terrible look for the NBA. Players look like childish devas telling everyone that they are loyal while to get a $250million contract and then the loyalty fades.
    Who is being loyal? Because it seems like the team is being loyal and the player is taking advantage of that loyalty.

    KD signed while Harden was around, happy, and before KAI had issues.... Beal was kinda forced out by a new FO who wants to rebuild... Dame was lied to for the past few years.... Theres more context than they signed and asked out... the premise is correct, but lacking context.
