  • Working with Apollo on the new table. This seems to be a much more natural way for him to learn and despite all of the distractions in a setting like this he does great. He seemed to insist on the paper bowl things being balls, I wonder why that is.
Apollo is our 4 year-old African Grey parrot we've had since December 2020.

There are some birds that such excellent mimics that when they recite human speech you can also hear the noises that were going on when they heard the original sound, like cars going by or construction going on. What's amazing about Apollo is it seems that he actually kinda understands the concept of a "word," as in a sound with specific meaning attached. In many videos you can hear him playing around with words, saying the same word different ways, so he's not just memorizing the sound, he understand it's made of parts and the parts mean something. It's crazy cool

    • @elenad3183

Yeah! He also takes apart some of the pieces of what seem to be his favourites. Some I remeber hearing are these: “cork. k. or. k.” And “Shrock. Sh. R.”
He’s also made his own words with pieces, like Glassk and Shrock. Truly interesting to watch him learn.

Apollo already knows the difference between ball and bowl pretty well. It seems to have something to do with the shape of the "bowl"
I think it might have something to do with how much it looks like a sphere and how small it is. Like, if you showed apollo a giance centipede he probably wouldn't recognize it as a "bug" either because all the bugs he has been shown have been small. Or like, it might have to do with how it rolls? Idk really would need to do some testing. Might even be he's never seen a paper bowl?

*I'm not certain if this is the case (because I couldn't see the bird for myself), but I think the noise/chirp that Apollo made immediately after saying he sees the bird outside was the specific chirp of that bird.*
*I also like how Apollo really seems to enjoy being a general menace, just throwing everything around he can get his beak on.* 😂

5:48 The distinction between ball and bowl becomes apparent: When you put a pistach inside of a ball, you can't get it out anymore. That should be understandable for Apollo.

I love that you actually take the time to understand and respect Apollo's thinking! Being consistently "incorrect" in how he classifies something shows intelligence too! He's not blindly repeating what you tell him, but actually thinking and categorizing objects in his head. It's actually so much more fascinating to see him insist the bowls are balls than it would be to see him change his tune after being corrected.
