- Instructions for working the Icelandic Bind-Off:
K the first stitch.
transfer stitch from the right needle to the left, giving it a little twist so that it is mounted correctly. Put your right needle through that stitch, as if to purl, reaching through to knit the next stitch normally (through the front loop)
Repeat between the *s until one stitch is left. Break yarn, pull end through last loop, tighten to fasten.
Information on things you'll see in the video:
The bulky yarn I used for demonstration is Lion Brand Hometown USA. I demonstrated using size 13 US (9mm) needles.
The needles I used are bamboo, made by Clover.
The sweater on the mannequin is my Ombre Dyed Sweater, pattern + video tutorial:

Thank you, Staci. I always find myself coming back because you manage to squeeze all the details in -- not just how to do it but making sure to show us how stretchy it is and compare it to the standard bind off. You are so good! Cheers.
I loved how this bind off stays in place, and it does give a decorative ending to the knitting, and it doesn't roll over. ♥♥♥ Thank you.
I was just finishing up a baby blanket, when I saw the new post on the Icelandic bind off, decided to give it a try, it is so neat, so finished looking and as I usually use a cable cast on, the finished cast off is so similar to the cast on that you really have to look to notice the difference..Thanks
It might depend on the yarn and gauge you're using for your project. I just used this BO on the cowl neck of a poncho - it worked perfectly. It is holding the shape of the rest of the cowl, and it's still stretchy enough to get it over my head easily.
Thank you, Staci! Your explanations are the best. They are easy to understand and follow. You are the rare find, a gifted teacher.
Thank you for this up close and very clear tutorial! I purchased a knitting pattern on Etsy by a Russian designer and when reading through the download I panicked to see it instructed you to use “Icelandic bind off” to finish the dress sleeves! I’d never ever heard of it! Enter your tutorial! Thank you much. I keep returning here for more great instruction.
You have an incredible gift of explaining clearly and concisely. I watched other videos and they didn’t click at all. I couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you so much!
Staci. Thank you so much. I have visited your You Tube videos countless times. The forethought and planning that goes into an episode is apparent. You prepare them from the perspective of what a learner needs to know, not what an experienced teacher wants to teach. I hope we wind up in the same neighborhood in heaven. Omg thank you! I am working a pattern that asks for an Icelandic bind off and I was SO confused at the written instructions and this cleared it right up!
It's in my book Cast Ons, Bind Offs, and I loved it right off. This is a good demo.
this bind off looks beautiful in garter stitch. thank you!
Thank you. Yet another great video. I am always looking for stretchier bind offs. This one looks perfect. As do many, many others, I love your videos. They are very informative and easy to follow. Again, thank you.
Thank you, this looks easier than I thought it would. I love all of your videos! 😍
This bind-off technique is really pretty! Thank you for this little tutorial...I'm thinking I might use this on a project I have in mind for a Christmas gift. I have learned so much from you!
This is a lovely way to cast off (UK term!) and has provided an attractive finish to the collar on a cardigan I am just finishing. Thank you for providing such clear instructions.
This bind off works perfectly for a neat edge on garter.
Thank you Stacy! A series of Bind offs and whiy not cast ons would be amazing!
Mary Ann Buck - It really depends on the gauge you're knitting. It's worth a try...work a few inches of this bind-off on your sweater, take a look, and see how you like it. If it isn't working out, you can take out those few stitches and try a different BO.
Very interesting! Thanks
Looks great must have a go
Thank God someone found a better stretchier way to bind off, finally!!! Great demo. The outcome is pretty, too.
I just used this to bind off a pair of fingerless mitts (the Align Mitts). This not only looks great as a finish on this edge but it seems like the perfect stretchiness around the fingers. I struggle with casting off, i am either way to tight or way too loose. Thank you for teaching us all.
It almost looks like this achieves the same sort of weaving that a sewn bind off would, but doesn't require five bazillion feet of fiber if you're working the body! I'm excited to try this!
Love the Icelandic bind off. Used it on a cowl scarf and looks so much nicer than the normal bind off and haves some give to it. Will use this more often. Thanks for sharing :-)
Hi pretty
Thank you for the very clear instructions. However, I found this cast off very, very tight at the bottom of a ribbed sweater in the round and not stretchy as you say in the video. I have to rip it out which is very time consuming. I might try it again with a larger sized needle.
Finishing my first knitted...thing, and the bind-off worked great. But what happens when you get to the last stitch? I'm figuring you don't put it back on, but what DO you do?
You can take your thread and just thread it through that loop and pull. And then I’d make a knot. From there there’s various ways people do it probably
Very impressive, reasonably easy and I will be back for a refresher when it's time to bind off. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Clarine - I'm surprised to hear that. I didn't test knit this BO in a cellulose fiber, but I would think that it would still be stretchy, based on the way it is worked. I have only used it in wool and wool-blend yarns, and it is especially and significantly stretchier than a normal BO.
Great video and explanation for this bindoff. Very clear and easily understand. Thanks!
Thank you Staci for bringing this visually pleasing bind-off. As soon as you create a video with a new unknown technique (to me, of course😉), I run to my needles and try it !
I found the look of the Icelandic bind-off very pleasing, but not stretchy enough for toes-up socks cuffs.
So I stopped to think about why it was so and I may be wrong, but found out it really isn't that different from the "usual" straightforward bind-off technique, except for the I-cord look and the needling method :
Usual bind-off = "knitting the first stitch and the second, then passing the first stitch over the second"
- vs -
Icelandic bind-off = "knitting the first stitch, putting this knitted stitch "twisted" on the left needle and knitting the next stitch through the first knitted stitch (which makes the first stitch pass over the second one)"
Neither technique gives more loose yarn to the bind-off so as to give "stretchability", the big difference being in the "reversing" of the first stitch, which gives it it's purled I-cord aspect, I suppose.
Anyway, I'm sure to use it for other projects, because of its pleasing look. Thanks again, Staci !🌻🌺🌼
Every other video I have watched for the Icelandic bind off has you putting the stitch back on the needle purlwise…not knit wise. I’m knitting a children’s poncho and will use your method for the bind off. Thank you.
Virginia - I think the German Twisted CO would be a good match for this BO, stretch-wise. I don't think there is a CO that really looks like this, but at least you can match the stretch.
that looks so easy and interesting, I can't wait to try it!
best tutorial ever for this bind off!
A quick thank you! I needed a refresher-great demo. Used this on a möbius cowl a while back-looks amazing, the perfect edge treatment!
Love, love, LOVE this bind off!
You have a great manicurist! You have great hands and nail shape to show off the manicure too. :)
I used this BO today after watching this for my Age of Brass and Steam. The first time I made it last year some time, I bound off way too tight but this was perfect! Thank you for the video Staci! Xx
The German Twisted Cast-On is a good choice to match the stretch of this BO. You can find my video on that technique by searching my channel page!
Hi Joan - thank you for the note! I do have several videos on different cast-ons and bind-offs...it's tough for me to arrange them on RUclips properly, but if you visit my website, I have a separate category arranged for each. Sort of like a series. :)
WOW!! I'm testing it now on a shawl with fingering weight yarn, and it's looking fantastic!! Thanks a lot for this one!!
Hi pretty
Thanks so much for this Staci!! I just tried 3 different bind-offs for a headband I just knit, but they just kept curling… was at wit’s end when I found this video!! Game-changer!! Thanks so much! Your videos are all amazing!!
Thank you, Rachel! But I'm afraid I can't do a half-moon manicure tutorial, because I don't do them myself. I have these done at the nail salon. I only do plain manicures here at home.
Thanks for sharing.
In other videos the sts which is put back onto the left needle is not twisted. Whats the use of twisting the sts?
You’re great thanks for demonstrating that cool bind off.
Just saw a YT short about this and I thank you for showing the comparison of the 2 techniques. ❤
Just tried this for a shawl I knitted. Its not really stretchy at all. So I must be doing something wrong.I do love the look of it though. I'm going to take it out and try something else so I can block the shawl.
Short, sweet, perfectly clear. Thank you!
I love your video, I tried it and it wasn't very stret hy, I thought I must be pulling too tight. I watched 3 other Icelandic videos and they don't twist, don't even have to remove stitch from right needle to go faster. But that turned out more loose to me but i loke the look of your way , so I tried your way again and looser seems to work, there is a difference twisting that stitch back. I actually think it's prettier if not as stretchy.
I tried this bind off and it wasn't stretchy at all with the yarn I was using. Don't know if it is because the yarn I am using is bamboo or if that even makes a difference. Fortunately, it doesn't matter that it is not stretchy because I am using it on a cowl. I'll try it again with a different type of yarn next time. I like the way it looks, however.
I'm wondering if this would be appropriate for binding off the garter stitch neck trim of a sweater? I love the looks of this bind off but don't want the neckline to become "baggy" because of the bind off. Thank you for this VERY clear video!
Great! Thanks. I was having a hard time matching the stretch. One side would always be too loose and the other too tight.
Hi pretty
Never tried this before and I just love it! Thanks👍🏻🧶❤️
Hi pretty
What a neat bind off! Can't wait to try it.
Thank you. It looks very nice and a lot like an iCord. I was a bit confused because you did not say "knit two together" and then slide off the needle.
I am wanting to execute this bind off in 2x2 rib. Do you think it will work? Do I have to enter the second stitch differently for the purl stitches that I am binding off? Staci, this video and all of your other instructions are SO clear and helpful. Thanks for all you do for us!
oooh this looks great!! Cant wait to see how you make out with toe up socks! Ive been itching to CO a pair!
Thanks so much for sharing this technique. I used it on a shawl and it is gorgeous- makes such a lovely edge and is very stretchy.
Hi pretty
What a beautiful bind off! Thank you!
Amazing! Your videos are so clear and professional and fun and creative. Now I don't know if I'll choose Russian bind off or Icelandic. =) Bravo!
Just saw this and cannot wait to give it a try.
I don't have a tutorial or pattern on what you're describing, but I do know of a pattern out there. They're called "Broad Street Mittens", and you can find them on Ravelry.
Outstanding demonstration! I was looking for a nice way to complete a shawl. Thanks!
I found your video through a link in a pattern from Ducathi1 (Tuck Mitts) and I am amazed. Thank you very much for this beautiful bind-off.
Please consider doing a nail tutorial. PLEASE? Your half moon manicures are gorgeous!
Hi pretty
Looks so cool! Can you do this with ribbing, like k1p1? Or k2p2?
I really like the way you do the tutorial of the Icelandic bindoff. The only problem is that you stop in the middle of the bindoff, I want to know how to neatly finish the Icelandic bindoff. I have one stitch hanging on my needle. I want a neat finish. Thank you.
You can finish it off just like other bind-offs - cut the yarn (leaving enough tail to weave in) and thread the cut in through the last loop, then pull to tighten.
Really cool, I'll have to try this on my next project. Thanks for the video! (Love your nails, BTW!)
Thanks. I love the look.
I saw somewhere where they said you should use this to match the German Twist Cast On, do you agree? I'm new to knitting so I definitely want them to match more if that makes sense lol
Love this, I've got to try this on the 'stay on baby bibs' Thanks so much I think it's going to work. Well, at least all baby's necks will appreciate it. lol
Io ho provato questa tecnica utilizzando l'uncinetto: è molto più veloce e pratica ed è identica all'originale ai ferri!
thank you very much for this video! I learned so much thanks to your kindness! This bind off is wonderful!
Finally a bind off easy and stretchy
that's way above my skill level lol. I'll search your videos, I'm sure you have some that will teach me to do that :-) thank you!
Hello, Thank you for these options for casting off! I am making a 2x2 ribbed edging on a hat - would I change this Icelandic binding off differently for a ribbing? Thankyou, Jamie
My question too!
fourwindsflowers I just found another video showing that you bind off all stitches the same way, i.e., same bind off stitch for knits & purls & can be used on ribbing.
Wow, that’s fascinating!
Thank you for the close up with larger yarn . . . it would have been ok to finish the row for me to follow along 😃
I think it's gonna become my new bind-off for big socks :D
I am Icelandic, never seen this before ;)
You are magical. Thanks!
Fabulous. Thanks for posting this.
Hi, I’ve tried this cast-off with 1/1 ribbing, but doesn’t give nice look when knitting the knits and purling the purls. Should I also knit the purl stitches like it shows in the video? What should I do. Hope you are doing fine with the family with this coronacrisis...🙏🙏
I've used this BO on socks. I found it too stretchy and left the rib quite wavey
Hi pretty
that's really pretty! is there a way to cast on to get the same look such as for a scarf so it's the same on both ends? I think thst would look so pretty on the ends of scarves without tassles!
+Donna Wilkins - I don't know of a cast-on that looks just like this...to match the two ends of a scarf perfectly, you can do a provisional cast-on, finish the scarf, then release the cast-on stitches and bind them off with the same bind-off.
One thing you could try is a provisional cast on and when you are finished your scarf you could do the bind off on both ends :)
Love it! Thanks Staci!
Great tutorial! Thanks :)
Leave it to you to have the bind off which will work on my afghan. How would I do this to the beginning of my afghan which does not have loose stitches and was a long tail bind off? This is really a cool bind off! Thanks, Larry
I'm not sure I understand your question Larry - but you will need to remove any bind-off you've already done so that you have live stitches. Then you can start this bind-off.
VeryPink Knits I think the question is .. is there a cast-on that looks and stretches like this bind off?
+dragonracer3 , The old Norwiegian cast on looks the same, feels good on double pointed's for socks (it holds the needle with a gentle hug, and eliminated my ladders on the first few rows!), and it's beautiful on the bottom of a hat or cuff. verypink has a tutorial
I love this sweater pattern. Could you tell me what yarn did you use please. BTW I love all your videos.
Here is more info on the sweater (you'll always find links and info to everything you see in my videos in the video description field, just below the video): verypink.com/2012/07/18/ombre-dyed-sweater/
What kind of cast on did you in this piece of fabric?
I'm asking because your cast on looks like a regular bind off, I'm very interested 🤔
If I use it BO on neck line, how can I pick up sts again for cowl?? Can you show us it?
I used a worsted weight and no 3mm needle.
Thanks, Staci. What cast on do you think would be the best match for this bind off? I am trying to make napkin rings and cannot get the cast on and cast off stitches to look alike (and they need to be stretchy) as they will be so close to each other.
Hi pretty
What do you do with the last stitch on the needle? It doesn’t seem like pulling the thread through will secure it
Thank God we can still knit with this Corona crisis... what would we do without it? I wouldn’t survive.....😉 Thanks for this video. I’m certainly going to try this one! Just one question: does it also work with 1/1 ribbing? Or is this only possible with stockinette stitch? Tnx for your reply! Dona from Belgium, Europe
Yes, you can use this cast-on for any stitch.
How do I unknit/tink an Icelandic bind off??
Very nice! I like it!
Is there a corresponding cast on?? This looks very useful!
Hi pretty
Staci, would this be one of the most stretchy but least "flaring" bind offs, in your opinion . If not, what is?
This is the non-flaring bind off that I use for most projects, kind of a go-to stretchy BO:
ruclips.net/video/SbzeEg6XMwM/видео.html
Could this also work for socks , as the simple stretchy bind off?
Can this bind off be done in 1 x 1 rib?
How do you tighten up the loop from binding off the last stitch?
