Fabulous Detail!! Really captures the feel of the LA - San Diego line. Although a Midwesterner I've ridden the route about a dozen times. Keep up the good work! David 😷 in Chicago 🇺🇸

Here is a tip for what it's worth. As can be seen in this video, the standard passenger car lighting in such models is extremely bright. You wouldn't be able to see that much brightness, or much see inside the car at all, on a real train in daylight. (Same goes for the interior lighting through the vents of the Siemens Charger engine.) I had added magnetic reed switches to a number of cars for a museum railroad to turn lights off. This is not new. But then I got the idea to just drastically dim the lights and leave them on at all times. I did this for a number of HO Broadway Limited SP Daylight passenger cars. I reduced the lighting current from 12.5 ma to 2 ma. The effect is that you can just barely see that lights are on in normal room lighting. But with dim lighting or darkness, they look like how a train in real life looks. Not a million candle power streaming out, but a nice glow. In this way, there is no need to turn them on and off. And if we dim the room lights, it is almost as if they have magically turned on, although they have been on all the time.

I liked seeing the cars lit up with the people inside. It brings a lot of life to the layout.

Nice trains. I assume the Surfliner cars must be scratch builds? Well done on the details.

As mentioned, they look like the Overland Models set. I'm quite sure that's what they are. Very, very nice, but can cost 3 to 4 thousand for a set IF you can find them. And you still have to add lights and sound yourself to the cab car. Another way, which I have done myself for a railroad museum layout is use the Walthers "Surfliner" cars. These are correctly painted for the three Superliner 1 cars Amtrak has. They differ from the other Surfliner cars in that the blue window stripe only goes to the top of the side and not part way up the roof, are not "California Cars" with two entry doors per side, and do NOT have the big "Surliner" logo on them. But you can get decals for that from Union Station Products. And then you scratch build one of the coaches into being a cab car at one end. You can also get sides from Union Station Products, but you have and almost scratch building and painting project including having to scratch build everything about the cab car. Also as mentioned, Athearn is producing them and they are supposed to be delivering them this month (August 2021). Regarding the set I made from the Walthers cars (and it is fun to see the lights and flashing ditch lights of the scratch built end of the cab car) quite a few HO modelers have asked me "Where did you get those?" I suspect at least a couple of others have done the same thing. I saw one RUclips that seemed to be Walthers cars similarly modified.

I'm sure those are the Overland Models brass set made many years ago. They sell for 3 to 4 thousand dollars for the set IF you can find a set for sale. And you still have to add lights and sound to the cab car. I made a set for a museum using the Walthers Superliner 1 cars they sold in Surfliner paint scheme and adding Union Station Products "Surfliner" big logo name to them. And scratch building one end to be a cab car with lights and sound. Athearn has since offered a set which is estimated for delivery August 2021.
