Thank you for demonstrating the close focus capabilities of this lens. This is one of the most important factors to me. In my use, having an all-in-one lens requires some semi macro capability.
I compared prices with similar F4 lenses for Canon and Sony and it appears Nikon has done it again - lowest price and best quality. I am getting one for my Z 6.
This must be the best all-around lens of any system now! Thought to get the Sony 24-105 mm, as it's on winter sale, but this lens is so much better. Hope Sony will make an upgrade soon? Or maybe I move to the Z-mount?
@@scotttucker9613 This is the story of basically every Z lens vs its comparable E lens. Sony is easily 10-15 years behind in every case. The bright side is that E lenses cost the same amount? That's a pro, right?
@@KungPowEnterFist though I don't think that's absolutely true, it would make sense that Sony is behind in this department, right? Firstly, Sony has some lenses, especially some of their version II GM lenses, that are as good as any according to the vast majority of reviewers here in YT. I mean, Sony paved the way for full frame mirrorless system lenses. Mistake or not, it was nonetheless a detriment to the overall image quality that Sony designed their camera system with a smaller mount. I firmly believe the larger mounts on the Z, RF and L mount systems has afforded these better optics. Disclaimer, I don't shoot Sony. I have Nikon Z and some Fujifilm gear. I just follow all of the brands and photo news and waste a lot of time online window shopping, like I'm sure many commenters do.
I'm in the process of getting into photography and like so many others I found your video after narrowing down my best options for my Z6II. I will probably end up having three or four lenses at the most and I'm looking for a first that would cater for most needs. I'll be doing product photography, some landscape and everyday use. I think this will be a perfect choice for that, especially seeing that this lens actually is quite capable at semi-macro footage as well - huge pro. It seems to be very versatile. Thanks for your thorough review, it helped me out quite a bit on making up my mind!
I would be happy if you would also test sun stars (from the real sun) in your reviews in the future. Sun stars from artificial light sometimes behave differently compared to the real sun. For example, I think of the Nikon 14-30mm f4 S in particular: lights on the Christmas tree look fantastic (see here: "DPReview TV: The great ultra-wide sunstar shootout"). But at the same settings with the real sun, the sun stars seem a bit jumpy and form less defined rays. You have to google for sample images. Furthermore, it is important that the atmosphere is free of any haze, dust, clouds, so that you get sun stars (whether beautiful or less beautiful). Of course, all sun stars can gain a boost towards beauty when the sun hangs in the dense treetop with lots of leaves or scratches another edge of an object (mountain, house wall, etc.). However, this type of test is rather less meaningful. As a landscape photographer I like to position the sun in the sky without an object scratching the sun. Okay, sometimes the sun hangs between branches etc. ;-) I would also like to point out something else: The sun stars also change with the focal length of the lens. For example, the new Nikon 24-70 f4 S has a nice sun star with defined lines at 24mm and f22, but no defined rays emerge at 35mm, 50mm and 70mm (anything above 24mm). Despite the closed aperture, these rays appear to have fanned out. I hope you understand my request Chris. Therefore, I would be happy if you consider all focal lengths with a closed aperture in your reviews and use the right sun (free atmosphere) as the light source. I've seen a lot of reviews here on RUclips and unfortunately the sun stars are very often neglected! As a landscape photographer who wants really nice sun stars (bless the old Nikon 20mm f1.8!), it's difficult to find this info on a number of websites. I think this adds even more value to your reviews. I hope I'm not alone with my thoughts and desires and would appreciate a "thumbs up" so Chris can read this. So thanks again for everything and may God bless you!
Nikon and Panasonic got it right. 24-105 Lumix offers better magnification & zoom mechanism + OIS vs a little more reach, FN-button/-ring and slightly lighter. A comparison sure would be interesting between the two, albeit probably close.

Thanks Richard, yet another superb review (of a great lens)! I am wondering: how about VR efficiency? Did you try to handhold anything around 1/10s at 120mm? Any feedback will be appreciated.
Hi Vaclav, the lens has no VR so it really relies on the camera's inbody image stablisation system for that. So i didn't really do any stablisation test with this lens as the result would depend on the camera (and the user) rather than the lens

Thanks for the review Richard, you never disappoint. I have a question though: Did you take a look at distortion in RAW? Here you just show a video sample footage, which may be digitally corrected. How does it perform in RAW?
hi parshua, thanks for watching! Re the RAW, yes i had a look, and they look pretty much the same as the video (which is actually a HDMI screen capture ). Nikon RAW file's distortion control are embeddedd and automatically applied , so if i have to remove that, actually need to do quite a bit of work to remove those profile/metadata. I have done that in some of my previous Z lens review, but not every Z review as I'm still undecided which way is the "better" way to do.
@@TheRealRichardWong I assume you have read the DPReview article regarding the embedded profiles and that has influenced your method. While I respect that, I'd argue that the optical performance of a lens is independent of the digital corrections, and since digital corrections can always be applied later anyway, there is no need to include them in lens tests. Further more, digital corrections are not always necessary and in most circumstances, I do not apply them in the software I use (DxO Photolab) unless they have visual influence in the image. If you don't show us the actual optical performance of the lens in your review, there is no way for us to assess its suitability for our requirements without actually buying it ourselves, which is counterproductive in a review. Great review Richard! Thanks a lot. I've already have it. It's the 3rd version I've got from Nikon in the same range lens (24-120) and I agree with you in the terms you were talking about. Thanks!
As an owner of this lens, I just found out that Nikon disabled the fully mechanical shutter whenever this lens is attached to your camera. Apparently this was done as a poor man's version of vibration reduction / image stabilization because the lens is very susceptible to shutter vibration especially at longer focal lengths. This might be okay, but what just doesn't sit right with me is how Nikon never openly mentions this. Customers are forced to find out after buying the lens.
I was waiting for your review Richard! Great job once again. Silly question in regards to corner sharpness… you did a jump from 24mm right to 50mm.
