THIS IS WHY METAL FANS HATE ME

- It's not secret that metal fans hate me! I look at why, starting with one of the many Reddit threads where metal fans hate me, and getting further into the psychology of why listening to metal becomes an unhealthy identity for some metal fans.

I would love if you also create playlist in apple music and other streaming services.
become the knight is a mate of yours, he's a massive metal fan, I love metal but love watching your content, they hate any critics, I mean if you say alot of negative on Megadeath, deftones, tool, dream theater, but honestly you have some great points
Bullying the bullies makes you as bad as the bullies
I love your opinions! I enjoy watching all the stuff and don’t get bent bc it’s just opinions. Too many people have their identity ingrained in their musical interests.
I base my identity on watching Finn Mckenty videos so when people criticize him I cry for 37 hours straight.
37? In a row?

Flip the bird and get on with your life I get worked up about metal but why get bent out of shape over words I get more worked up because I can't get into modern metal
@@emperortrevornorton3119 have you listened to Finn Mc Kenty's Extremely Satanic Slam Brutal Death Metal band?

That's it Finn you called out one of my hobbies and now I'm insecure about it. I'm team reddit that's it. Find me in the comments section next week comparing you to famous dictators.
High five! We did it Reddit!!
Finntler
No! This is blasphemous to my chosen lifestyle and my sense of identity! I'm going to pick my overweight ass off of this chair, put on my "war vest," grab my spiked club and smash my TV tray in a blind rage like a black metal version of Nikado Avocado!
Seriously though, I've listened to metal most of my life, have always avoided tribalism (mainly because I had no consistent friends when I was younger) and I found this video hilarious. 😂
When a music genre becomes your entire identity and you spend precious moments of your life talking shit about people for their opinions or taste in music, that is when someone has truly lost the meaning of music. Music is extremely personal and meant to put the listener in a happier place regardless of what someone else thinks of whatever you're listening to. That's literally as simple as it is.
Confessed metalhead and a fan of your content Finn, keep it real.
Josefinn Stalmckenty
I'd argue music isn't meant to put anyone in a happier place.
If he had opinions about just the music cool. But he goes to far and goes after the fans.
I don't care if someone does not like Epica or Sabaton. But I draw the line at attacking the fans.
We all have different tastes. If people like you and Finn can't handle that then maybe grow thicker skin.
The main problem that I and many people have with Finn is that he talks shit about music genres, fanbases, and other things he doesn't like and it pisses off fans of those things. It's not rocket science. I'm not even a metal fan. I just don't like his trolling.
His shit talking is inherently negative, but if anyone has a problem with it and responds in anger, he insists that THEY are the negative ones, not him.
He gets off on the negative responses (most of the time; other times too much negative feedback brings him down, as he admitted on Twitter).
It's like if someone punches you and wonders why you punched back instead of taking it like a good sport.
Or it's like throwing gasoline on a fire and being surprised that the fire flared up.
Finn and his fans say that the metal fans are insecure, but honestly who likes when people talk shit about the things you love? How is that ok?
Metal fans in particular are passionate about their favorite music and don't take kindly to people attacking their favorite thing.
If you disagree with his takes for any reason, even if you are civil, he will screenshot your comment, post it on his social media, and call you a butthurt manchild or Reddit metal nerd. You just can't win with him.
He's flippant, dismissive, arrogant, ignorant, and constantly has hot takes, almost always bad ones. That's what people have a problem with and I'm far from the only one.
At a certain point, Finn needs to reflect on his behavior and consider that maybe he is wrong sometimes, not always the metal nerds, but he rarely admits to being wrong.
He defends himself as "just joking bro", but it's hard to tell if he's just joking or just talking shit and and using joking as an excuse.
Even if he is joking, I don't find his deadpan humor funny at all. It's just douchey.
But hey, this is just my opinion. This post is long, but I'm just being honest and I just wanted to explain myself. Finn might screenshot this or call it overly long word salad or whatever. I don't care.
I'm not some cartoonish Finn hater. Metal nerds are his bogeyman that he often puts the blame on. But I'm not a metal fan. I do watch Finn's videos and read his tweets, but I have mixed feelings about them.
Sometimes I like what he says and sometimes it pisses me off. Sometimes he says something insightful that I never considered before and sometimes I think his takes are bad and way off.
But either way, unlike his fans, I don't play good sport and tolerate when Finn attacks the things I love without saying something about it.
Tabitha Stanton "you spend precious moments of your life talking shit about people for their opinions or taste in music"
You mean like Finn does so regularly? Then by your logic, Finn has truly lost the meaning of music and I agree.
FINN FOR PRESIDENT 2024 - He doesn't properly worship Deftones, but damn it he smells the right fingers.
I'm a metal fan and have been for nearly two decades. You make a lot of intriguing points about the gimmicks and antics of the genre. I personally just like to hear somebody talk about thing I love from an analytic point of view and I always giggle when you're taking the pi$$ at metal. Keep doing you Finn, the community needs you.

As a metalhead who uses reddit, you fucking nailed it. I used to be guilty of metal tribalism, and I'm so glad I opened my mind up to a larger variety of music. And your channel is one of the reasons I've discovered new music and broke out of the metal elitism. I'm still a big metalhead at heart, but I'm so glad I've broke free of that gatekeeper mentality
The next step is to stop identifying as a "metalhead," like I finally did in my late 40s. The whole shtick is so juvenile.
That's how I was with hip hop in my late teens and early 20s. I would spend hours arguing on the internet about my beloved "real hip hop." It was almost an obsessions because it was MY hip hop. A decade later, I look back and just facepalm at how much of a neckbeard basement dweller I was.

I think this my favorite video of yours. This could be applied to everything polarizing people nowadays. It all comes down to being insecure, not having a strong core, and filling that identity void by identifying with social groups and things outside one's self. If we adressed the core issues leading us to behaving this way then perhaps we could prevent us from going through all the unnecessary violence going on right now. Also, maybe people could benefit from developing a sense of humor. Not taking myself so seriously has helped me cope with my own shit so I don't take it out on others who are also struggling.
well said. market interactions replacing social interaction indeed has alienated people from the freedom and self-determination that would otherwise lead them to fulfillment. addressing the ownership over the production of society by a small minority of financialists -- seeking a populist solution that helps the many, getting to the root material, physical causes for these issues is the solution - I wholeheartedly agree if people's needs were met violence could be avoided. and Finn is 100% right about all the politicians speaking to this right now being phony. all current politicians are liberals (whether progressive or conservative) who seek the same goal of preserving the anarcho tyranny of the free market, placing profits before people. any new way forward that genuinely helps the people must be OF, BY, AND FOR THE PEOPLE. I believe the next American Revolution will come and the American People's Republic will be established with Liberty and Justice For All per the Constitution. Communities and jobs rebuilt, social institutions and relations restored. debts forgiven. On Earth as it is in Heaven. The Great Jubilee. We just have to build the Kingdom now.

Loved this explanation, I think it’s really important for people to understand that basing your personality around politics, music or a “thing” is a sure fire way to get yourself wrapped in knots about topics which don’t give a fuck about you
Ska fans and metal heads finally found something they agree on! You really bring people together.
Wrong. Ska fans have a sense of humor. We know our favorite genre sucks :P
This is why I've dug your stuff since Sergeant D and SYWH. You really understand how people latch onto their hobbies and make their whole identity about them, and are great at poking fun at that, but most importantly, understand how this attitude is both unhealthy to the individual as well as to the subculture they think they're upholding.
Really good vid, man.
Thanks for the support for so long!
Facts. Metal is just another form of entertainment, just like all music. It’s important to not let that (or any other form of entertainment) define you as a person.
Reddit has become Twitter for people who have convinced themselves they're too good for Twitter. I'm a power metal fan and yet I can still get down with your opinions. Keep up the great work, love your content.
When ideology becomes identity. This is an issue today that spans more widely than music cliques.

@@spellman007 Are you replying to the wrong thread? ...because your question has absolutely nothing to do with my comment.
“All these pop artists are the people who picked on me in high school” in reality most pop artists, hip hop and rappers grew up on rock/metal and are influenced by them. This is also the case for a lot of fans too, that jock who picked on you also listened to Limp Bizkit bro. But people overall need to grow up and develop a you do you mentality, that would solve a ton of problems we have.
"most" ehhh that's a big stretch
I used to be a militant metal nerd, but in my late 20's I realized that there are more important things in life than my taste in music. I love all those classic metal bands you like to shit on in your videos, and honestly, that's why I enjoy your content a lot! I like seeing all the metal fan tropes get brought up and shit on because I can relate.
Man, you’re spot-on with this. The action figure collecting community is in a civil war right now over a $350 car with flames.

I'm a metalhead and I don't hate you. It's entertaining to me because there's some things I agree with you and some others than I don't, that's what makes it interesting 🤘🎶
I had a great childhood and have loved metalcore, death core, death metal, most metal, since I was a teenager.
I love your analogy of criticizing someone's interest is like criticizing them personally. That's why we have fandoms from all kinds media such as movies & tv shows, that become so outraged when something from that property sucks.
I’ve been called a poser because I couldn’t name every member of bands and know details about their personal lives. I don’t give a fuck about the personal lives of the bands! I listen to the music. That’s it. I don’t need to know what size shoe the guitarist’s cousin wears or who the singer banged and when. I’m just here for the music, people.
I'm a metalhead & sub to both of your channels. Although I don't always agree with your opinions, I find you interesting & love your content. Just thought I'd say this 🤘🤘🤘

Same. I think sometimes his generalizations are a little too sweeping / lacking nuance, but I still like Finn’s commentary and I often discover good stuff from his videos
Agreed
Known underground genre slam with small bands such as Internal Bleeding Suffocation and Devourment.
They hate you cause you hold a mirror to them and they don't like what they see. You have even said things that make me take a look at myself, but I don't get mad about it, I take it more as a reminder that I need to be better, if anything thanks for it, it promotes personal growth and that's always a good thing. ♥️
You're not just talking music anymore brotha, now you're talking philosophy and life. Love u dude
At my school when I was a kid, I'm 47, it was the metal kids who were cool and the bullies. That drove me to Hardcore and Punk, then the whole 'tough guy' Hardcore thing or NYHC.
You've also called the metal community sexist, racist, and have made broad negative assertions (like the majority of this video until the last couple of minutes when you admit you have been antagonistic) multiple times; and you wonder why the community has an issue with you?
Also, a lot of your takes are inconsistent. You say that metal is stuck in the past and too generic but then say slam and death metal are dead because those genres morphed into something you don't like. Do you not think this might be why people don't like your opinions.
I'm sure some of the criticism is unwarranted but a lot of it isn't.
That is also true
I hope this doesn't hurt too bad, Finn; even if I don't always agree with your opinion, I still find it valuable, and you don't deserve the hate.
I will share though, that I am maybe that rare exception of someone who grew up with a perfect childhood and still got into metal, haha. Seriously, my family is all into country music and pop, and I'm into rock and metal, but I got into cause of the "energy and power" that comes from it. As much as I love metal though, I'm realizing more and more that I don't have much in common with actual metalheads, haha.
People need to grow thicker skin. Getting pissed at some dude on RUclips that his opinion on something differs from your own seems like the biggest waste of energy that I can think of. It’s like getting mad at someone in front of you at subway for ordering a sandwich that isn’t the same as what you’re going to order. It’s insane.
Sorry but I can agreed about many things but not the fact that who listen to extreme music is clearly “dysfunctional”. This is extremely simplistic and quite wrong, I have no bland taste about anything…art, literature and of course music. I like the aesthetics, I like the energy of it…had perfect childhood, went to uni, I have a great career. It’s time to stop with this “listen to good boyfriend country” so you’ll put yourself in a better place…and pleeeease stop necessarily linking everything to “mental health” & co, that’s the justification for everything apparently, every hipster (according to them) has at least a couple of “conditions” because apparently that’s so cool right now… 🤦🏻♂️
i thought metal dudes on YT were bad , and don't get me wrong movie guys are bad too... but there's even worse than both of them; video games nerds who will argue forever about a franchise or console being bad/good.. these people are so much worse than any metal fan I've ever seen. It's okay to have a hobby but to make that hobby entirely who you are will lead to so much unnecessary stress.
I make consuming Finn's videos my identity. Don't you dare attack this man or I feel insulted!
Haha
The Opinion Man - I loved the post you did on Band Maid and the Yellow Fever followers - thanks for the shows !

Your haters are a testament to your success! Being ignored would be far worse, and for every one of those people who talk shit you have someone like me who para-socially adores you and loves your positivity, balance and humour. You’ve made it Finn. Nice words as ever and you have my vote for power.
You know what imma say it. I like Finn's content and his takes. I've found many new bands that I like through his content and also a couple of new 10 albums. So thanks for that.

Some cases yes; this def holds true for the people butthurt-posting against you.
As for the rest of us, it’s more like: this music spoke to something in our souls in ways other stuff didn’t, and btw, sent the message that “you’re not crazy, not less than, but not better than anyone either; just different. There’s a place for your quirks where you can relax and be you.”
It's simple:
If you critique, it's hate. If they do it (like they do 24/7), it's enlightened, educated, elite-level discourse on a nuanced genre.
but they're the kind of person to smell their own fingers
I've been a metalhead for 20 years and you're totally right in this video! I recently subscribed and really enjoy your videos.
you’re a smart/ funny/ insightful dude who’s actually putting himself out there and gaining success with it! I’ve been watching your vids for years now. I appreciate how you’ve promoted a lot of the stuff I like! For better or worse. All I will say is be careful not to alienate some of your more well meaning fans in the process of calling out whatever… fresh Reddit hell that was. I know you’ve said you read all your comments and have heard many RUclipsrs say that very thing has been hard on their psyche. Anyways We’re all just out here trying to make it through each day the best way we know how. I just got called a “h0m0” by a group of refugee kids yesterday and… I may have screamed shutup u lil fukkrs back and I just hope things don’t escalate now.
Gosh, with so many other reasons to hate you, it seems silly that some metal fans would limit themselves to just that one.
i love giving you sarcastic shit about ska, which feels like a fun back and forth relationship between us. i just see the ska references like hidden love letters to me, but never take it seriously because i couldnt give any shits about anyone elses opinion of stuff i like, its my likes and thats fine and their welcome to theirs.
I love ska and laugh whenever he let's his hate be known. It always gives me a fun chuckle haha
@@Nick_CF exactly, i just laugh and say... oh finn, youre so wrong, but we love you anyway. im just waiting for the ska 2.0 resurgence and bowling shirts and checker print slip ons come back in style.... i would love to see this generation of rappers dress in ska attire... that would really shut him up...
Revisiting this: the metal community, in general, has a serious problem when it comes to consumerism. For all of its talk about anti-conformity, not “sucking up to the establishment” and what have you, the culture is ridiculously fixated on owning “all these classic albums” and saying, “you’re not a true metalhead unless you own [insert any one of about 100 classic metal albums here].” Which is both unhealthy and wasteful IMO.
10:04 I'm sure there's many people who this applies to, but I got into death metal when I was 10 years old because I thought it sounded cool and different from a lot of what I knew. Metal has always been a positive part of my life :)
Saw a comment on a video the other day that referred to toxic elitist metal fans and I was confused because most of my interactions with metal fans are positive. But I don't visit metal reddit and now I can see what that commenter was referring to.
I could be described as a "Metal Head", but I have zero discontent for Finn. Today listened to an album called "Epidemic Of Violence" by a band called Demolition Hammer. Absolutely fucking savage shit. Yet, I love watching videos about Pop Punk and Imagine Dragons. Keep it going man 🖤
Demolition Hammer are sick especially that album!
Demolition Hammer freaking kills!
I love metal, but I really find the majority of the hardcore fans to be so cringeworthy. They cant help but throw petrol on the burning dumpster.
I'll also add, I had a great childhood - I just got into metal and punk and all that, because I preferred the sounds, not because I felt like a persecuted minority.

I'm just saying as a metalhead who disagrees with you at times, very few things exasperate me more than other metalheads. Keep up the good work!

We’d totally get along at a concert 🙌
I think it's really challenging in the 1st place if you want to spread documentation and opinion of alternative, rock, metal, and punk culture. We want that kind of infos but gatekeepers try to eat you out bc of 'refined taste' and shunned everything and everyone who tries to do that. Loudwire is mocked as a Metal WatchMojo now, but if you want to preserve your genre to the masses and new folks, you have to give that information. That's why i love your channel, Finn. You bring new infos to any genres that u interested in and not afraid to put your personal opinion to it, keep up the good work... .
I listen mostly to thrash and grew in the New Wave of Thrash Metal or whatever is it called. I got hundreds of comments in r\metal and r\metalmemes because I said Lorna Shore was cool. "To turn consumption of music into your identity, is pretty unhealthy"
Great point from Finn. And yes this applies to anything, particularly politics these days.
I don’t think someone else’s opinion should effect people in such a way, as if it renders what you like inadequate. You like what you like, that’s the beauty of things. Don’t always agree with you Finn but I love your videos!
I think any metalhead who is mature enough to enjoy something despite having differing opinions is a fan of Finn, the only problem is that metal fans aren’t mature and can’t stand someone with a different opinion on something because they act like children
I would argue that that's not completely true... I think it's the whole "vocal minority" and "I am my hobby" thing. From my own experiences so many of the people I know who are "metal fans" are totally fine and all pretty open minded.
The issue is that in any fandom there are people who just like the thing, and other people who's entire personality is based in that thing. And whether that's coffee, metal, trainers, punk, whatever, the small minority of people who base their entire self worth off THEIR hobby are almost always insufferable and always flood and pile on anyone who dare have an opinion different to theirs very vocally.
I know a lot of metal fans that watch this channel and respect Finn as a music fan and content creator even if we don’t always agree, myself included
@@anangelssos "I am my hobby" was a great way to put it. I think it's impossible to not have some part of a hobby injected into your personality, but there are levels to that-and some take it to a very unhealthy and obsessive level.

While I know I don't need anyone's validation, I just wanna highlight and emphasize how your perspective and influence validated and helped me grow out of that gatekeeper mentality I once had in high school and not be so tribulistic as I was once was. I appreciate the support!
I'm a classic metalhead, with Iron Maiden being my favorite band since the mid 80s. I even like cheesy embarrassing power metal. But I actually appreciate your opinions and your views on music. I literally see music as walking into an art museum. Although metal is my core favorite I can't imagine not enjoying most other forms of music. You can have your favorite artwork but you can love other forms of Art. Music is funny that way. I like the intricacies of power metal and prog metal such as dream theater but every once in a while you have to blast blitzkrieg bop. Edit- I also appreciate the fact that he brings to light the ridiculousness of people feeling victimized by social justice warriors. A lot of old school metal fans tend to be conservative where I'm from. Whether it be politics or the fact that they only like stuff their band did in the '80s. I have my preferences but I don't fit that mold completely.
I think it's more along the lines of the pop stuff that you listen to. Metalheads wouldn't be caught dead listening to pop which you often promote, but deep down they listen to it too they just won't admit it openly.
Hey Finn, I'm a "metalhead" and I love watching your videos. Even when I disagree you always have an interesting perspective. I think the people that hate you just don't have enough going on in their lives. People need to take things less seriously across the board. It's unreasonable to believe that everyone should like the things that you like. I agree with you that there's an inherent sensitivity built in with a very specific sect of metal fans because they've spent years trying to explain to people why they like heavy metal. What's unfathomable to me is how quick these same people are to make assumptions about other genres and occasionally even use the same phrases they once "defended" metal against. "That's not REAL music" is the first thing that comes to mind. I've heard people say that about metal and then metalheads turn around and say the same thing about pop or country or hip-hop. Its exasperating how tribal everything has to be these days. There are no laws against having Suffocation , Taylor Swift, Wu-Tang and Tyler Childers all on the same playlist people! haha Any way MBA or no MBA keep it coming my dude!
I think this video makes an excellent point. I got into metal as a young kid (7-8ish, definitely before I turned 10). Metal was my favorite genre back then, and at 28 it's still my favorite genre. Metal has always been part of my identity, but the emphasis is on "part". The truth is that I was never "just" a metalhead; I also enjoy: funk, jazz, pop, hip-hop, gaming, fishing, biking, hiking, kayaking, partying, dancing, programming, etc. And this isn't some "woo look at how special I am" moment. I'm just a metalhead who turned out to be a regular, well-rounded guy. If what I say seems like grandstanding, maybe get some more hobbies.
Diehard metalheads act like popular people are the biggest bullies, but I've had plenty of these people I expected to be my peers talk shit to me for being a poser and not liking the right bands or liking the wrong bands (which they usually called "g@y"). For a community that prides itself on being counterculture and going against the grain, many of its members sure like to put people in boxes and dictate who's "trve" and who's not
Enjoy your channel, and a metal fan. For what is worth, one of the reasons I listen is because I know I am going to get reactions to music that are very different from my own. Also you seem interested in a similar musical geography to me, but when it comes to metal you just seem interested in different metal sounds than I am (which I think is fine). I find it helpful to see other peoples reactions so I can remember the musical taste is just like any other taste. And it is interesting to me that so much of the contention is around genres of music that occupy very similar sound space (for example you might like a heavy song, but not the right kind of heavy song for another persons' style). It is also generally good to know that others aren't always enthused by what appeals to me.
I grew up listening to classic metal, and loved everything from Sabbath to Iron Maiden, but also got into death and ultimately doom metal (early doom up into the early 90s). I've also made a point of listening to other styles of music. I was a guitar player and took lessons and one of the things a good guitar teacher (or any music teacher will do) is find the things you like within the style of music you enjoy (i.e. minor keys, certain time signatures, particular scales, etc) and direct you to music you might not otherwise find. He sensed some baroque sensibilities in some of the metal and had me learn Bach (which opened up a world for me), but he also heard those minor keys and showed me music like Strange Fruit or Paint it Black. I think being able to understand that not everyone shares one's taste, and being able to listen to music outside your taste, even if you don't like it and it's just to give it a fair hearing, is a strong sign of musical maturity. Whenever people get defensive, I sense insecurity there. And that isn't to say people shouldn't have passionate opinions. It is music, it makes us feel emotions, we are going to have strong reactions to it. But keeping an open mind and appreciating differences in taste is pretty key I think.
Finn's tastes are a polar opposite to mine, but I find his content interesting too. I run a Metal group on Facebook and when I've posted Finn's videos before - I've seen how hated he can be! haha.
As a bonafide metalhead I can honestly say I love Finn's takes. The fact that Finn causes much consternation among the Metal community just proves he is more Metal than all of you. Because Finn lives rent free in your head.
Finn has possessed your souls more than the dark lord you tools practically worship. What could be more Metal than possessing your souls.
Brutal
As a metal head, who has never spent a second on a Reddit page, I don't "hate" Finn. I watch every video he puts out. I just think that some of his opinions on metal are dumb and kneejerk. Megadeth is garbage, but Nikki Minaj is amazing? Really? Then there's his ridiculous notion that if you talk about, or defend, something...."you've made it your whole identity". No, Finn, I just enjoy smoking weed once in a while, and figured enough people might relate that I should write a song about it. Doesn't make it my "entire identity". It's one song out 8 fucking albums. I do agree with his assessment of the gate keeping nonsense, though. However, with all that said, I also believe that 75% of his "opinions" on metal are just to troll, and admittedly, he gets me on it once in a while. I'm only human.
I’m a metalhead and you’re hilarious and informative. I also don’t mind that you like punk but not post-punk, trap but not shoegaze. Why would I care!? Who says everyone has to agree?
Finn McKenty is a store brand Anthony Fantano. And Anthony Fantano is in the clearance aisle.
R/Metal Memes banned me for being in the Slipknow, Sabaton, Babymetal sub... Those dudes (I doubt there are girls in there) are toxic AF

I just turned 18 and I started really getting into rock when I was about 13-14. It's honestly just slowly evolved from bands like 3 Doors Down to where now I'm chilling out listening to Slaughter to Prevail and Motionless in White. Childhood has been great, I just really love the music yk.
Metalheads are the biggest gatekeepers out of any fandom. Saint Peter is probably a metalhead.
Gatekeeping is in the eyes of the poser....
@@Anonymous-wb3nz great retarded point.
If anybody knows how to beat a dead horse it’s metal fans.
Totally enjoy and appreciate your takes, Finn
I feel like the odd exception of people who are into Heavy music as far as why I'm into it. I did have a "perfect" childhood. My parents have a great marriage. I get along with my siblings. We always had economic stability. Nothing traumatic ever occurred. But when I became a teenager, intense music simply appealed to me.
Very interesting
I suppose the darkness of metal appealed to me when my family moved abroad, and I didn't I felt like an outsider at my new school. But I still listen metal to this day, so I guess I just have a thing for intense music just like you.
@@johanericsson7309 that's an interesting thing to think about. My dad was in the US Air Force so we moved a lot. Maybe heavy music was my way of feeling like I belonged to something.
lol good old reddit. "Agree with us and our mob mentality about X-Thing or you're bad and wrong" gotta love it. Why does literally anyone take that place seriously ever.
King, if Reddit is hating on you, then you're doing something right in life.
You obviously don’t know Brendan Schaub.
@@bertfinland6720 nope, never heard of him.
I come from a place of dysfunction and insecurity and negativity and that persecution complex. I used to be more like that, saying my identity was the music i like and the music i make, before that it was Sci-fi and Star Wars when i was a kid, and in 2014 when i became vegan it shifted more towards that… but i realised that i am not what i consume, create, i am not my value set, etc.
I think when you are like that it’s because you simply haven’t delved deep enough into your own mind to understand who you are. Those people are too preoccupied getting offended to actually live in the now and just be themselves instead of being a signpost for what they love
Short answer - metalheads take themselves waaaaaay too seriously.

Hey Finn I'm a life long metalhead and find you very knowledgeable and informative. I thoroughly enjoy your channel and your take on various musical topics. I don't always agree with you but I respect your opinion.
The virgin Metal Fanatic versus the Chad Metal Enjoyer
So true, it is an actual thing lol
I like a lot of the music you shit on, but also a lot of the music you enjoy. If people cant handle that each person is different thats a them problem, stay true Fin you're an awesome guy.
Being a battle vest wearing, long greasy haired, neck beard enthusiast usually breeds a deep and fragile insecurity.
I agree on what you say about the whole identity thing. I'm 18 rn. I collect pokemon to points of having not been able to pay for gas and I base a lot on metal and movies and games which I don't know how to stop. Most of my general knowledge about like actual life and social interaction is based on how characters work. I got beat up in school and left high school because of it. I have like no clue how to stop this issues. I'm on medication. I've gone to 4 therapists. I don't know what to do but I know it's an issue and I guess that's a good start. Finn you're videos have often made me realize that I need to find more in life and I just don't know how rn.
Now I do think I haven't always been the best human. I accepted the beatings but later did get abused in relationships which I do not think are my fault. However leaving school caused isolation which was my fault and I don't know how to help myself. I have to move out eventually. My parents want me to go to college. (I'm doing virtual school now). I don't know what I want to do in life and it's scary.
Hang in there! If you are in therapy and taking medication, you’ll get this figured out.
Try joining a club or something. Go meet people IRL, even if its awkward or scary
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA you are a wonderful human Finn. Thank you
Wait…so you don’t have an official MBA in punk rock?
I vividly remember the moment I started liking metal. Linkin parks in the end came on TV and I froze in the middle of my living room. The heavy distorted guitars and the over mixed drums immediately hooked me. I won't say that I wasn't a negative child (truthfully I just don't really remember my early years very well) but I just find the blanket statement that metalheads are attracted to heavy music for negative reasons unsettling. Metal has always made me feel positive. Its the music though not the message or the lyrics for me.
Love your channel!
I have considered myself a metalhead for 28 years and I love your channel.
The thing about metal fans is that they take themselves too fucking seriously.
That's why I enjoy about Finn is that he doesn't take himself too seriously.
Spending time on reddit, especially communities like this, was one of the biggest wastes of time and energy in my life. Even though you sometimes get useful information on reddit, the huge amount of horrible opinions, peoples and communities is not worth the handful of good content. Incredibly toxic platform. The best thing is to avoid it alltogether nowadays
Dude, I’m a fan of yours because I listen to metal well I listen to a lot of stuff, but metal is one of the genres I really like and you aren’t wrong at all. Yes when I was in middle school in high school, I did have my core group of metalhead friends that I hung out with and I’m on good terms with all of them today. , a couple of them throughout my 20s I was in bands with.
But as far as like, living a metal lifestyle and making the type of music, I listen to everything about me and only associating with other people that listen to metal I quit doing that right after high school. I stayed friends with a few people, but as time went on like today, I can count on one hand, the friends I have that listen to metal.
They are some of the most judgmental people you can be around and I just can’t be around people that close minded. I quit my last band because during my off time when I wasn’t with the band, I liked watching football in basketball and I listen to rap music. Apparently I had broken number 614 and 793. And we had to have a band meeting. Keep in mind the average age of people in this band were probably around 28. Our drummer was the youngest and he was 21 me and one other guy was 30 and then the other two guys were 27. And we’re having a meeting because I like watching sports and listen to rap music.
And it’s not like when they would get in my van because it was my van that drove all of the equipment around but it’s not like I made them listen to ice cube when they were with me .
And I’ve just seen some of the stupidest shit from them. I watched a man in his mid 50s drunk as shit try to fight some 18-year-old kid wearing a Metallica shirt that had the album cover on it and he’s just screaming at this kid that “oh you deserve to die you fucking poser you’re a piece of shit motherfucker!” And just seeing how pissed off they get about what other people want to do in their own entertainment time over shit no one is forcing them to enjoy. Like if they get offended that easily they can’t hang with me. I’m sorry that’s childish shit. I love metal and always will but I can’t stand to be around other metal fans, except for a select few.
Once I commented somewhere, on a metal page on Instagram I think, or something like that : " I'm the type of dude that likes Suffocation and Abominable Putridity but also Counting Crows, Miley Cyrus, NOFX and Three 6 Mafia" and, man, I got a ton shit of shit for being able to enjoy diverse music. hahaha
Anyway, love the service you've been doing for metal and alternative music, mad respect.
Diversity is a good thing. People are in bubbles. I'll listen to Blondie then listen to some Fossilization. Or maybe some I, parasite. Better yet. Listen to some Crime Boss. Or some Van Morrison. Can't be a robot.
I just listened to the new Taylor Swift and Arctic Monkeys records this morning. They were both very good, and then I listened to Drudkh's new singles. I've got the new Exhumed queued up next.
Subscribed: Now on both channels. Bravo with the difference in both channels.
What I really would like to see on this channel. And especially from you. Looking forward to see a video from someone.
What's the difference in personality if you listen to
- black metal
- hardcore metal
- symphonic metal
- metalcore
...
or even metal vs pop...
Power metal are the happy guys and black metal are the... you know what I mean. ;)
First I liked you, after a while not so much. But now with both channels I really like your approach.
I’m sure saying that metalheads had bad childhoods (insulting their parents in the process) has nothing to do with why a large portion of the metal community doesn’t like you. I was with you in the first half, you totally lost me in the second.
yeah he lost me with that comment too but I agree with everything else he said
Hey Finn I am a metalhead + I think you are awesome! I love your channel bc I always find cool new stuff to listen to that I wouldn't have searched out on my own. I completely agree with your take on certain metalheads taking themselves wayyy too seriously. The metalheads who don't listen to anything except metal are the ones I try to stay away from as they seem to more often suffer from overly elite self-perception while also bashing everyone else for having different tastes.
PS- I laugh soooo fucking hard at your black metal videos/ jokes + black metal is one of my favorite genres of metal. I'll be the first to admit that black metal fans can be super disgusting + nasty, especially online, so I just keep to myself n listen to the music instead of participating in BM communities.
Thank you!
I posted a similar comment on your Abercrombie/Hollister video where I said I realized it was childish of me to hold so much resentment towards a brand 10+ years later because of what certain people who wore it put me through in middle school and high school, and I had a similar realization with music. These days, if a song is good, a song is good. I don't really give a shit what genre it belongs to and I don't care if people think I'm compromising whatever the fuck they thought my identity was back then. I also don't feel like any of that invalidates what happened in the past.
I love what you said. It's true. It's a problem basing your identity on consuming politics, music genres, celebrities, ECT.
It's etc (et cetera), not ECT 😄

Any time I see "metal fans" in the upload title, I know the video is about to be spicy!
Damn I feel extremely fortunate to be a big fan of many bands from every sub-genre of metal, hardcore and punk. Throw in some J. Cash, Jamie Johnson and Billy Strings too when I finish this Ekulu playlist.

Is Finsus his Christian name?
@@maynard_plumm Finsus McChristy
I just hope they won't crucify him like Jesus...
He took a single video and fed thousand haters at once!
Getting into metal is often an awful experience, every time you think you’ve pleased them all, there’s 5 other different kinds of metal heads that are ready to be angry with you. I just wish they would embrace people trying to understand. It’s like calling a band sellout because they can finally not have to worry about not having enough money to live off of because now people are getting into it
Just ignore these haters. I think the problem is that you dare to speak open about certain things that don't work good in the metal scene instead of praising that everything's fine.
But if you'd say that everything's fine in metal, noone would talk about you.
Btw, you've talked so much nonsense about Europeans, but I don't care. You're still my favourite RUclipsr.
I disagree with a lot of what Finn says, but he makes good content
I appreciate the support!
I got judged way more in school by fellow metal heads about my tastes in music than by any other group. Like you might get the odd Christian type being like "you like dark music" but no one else really cared.
Could not tell you how many times I got called a poser for liking Korn and Atreyu in 10th grade lol. A lot of those dudes kept me away from “Real™️ metal” and I gravitated towards the core side of things since the vibes and energy from people seemed more friendly overall.(not to say there weren’t any toxic assholes there either but I had to dig a little deeper. At least in my experience). If any normie types cared they’d ask me shit like if I knew the “down with the sickness song” or tell me I wear trippy shirts(RIP neon Cartoon monster merch).
@@real30yearoldboomerhours53 Very much remember being questioned if I even had listened to Anthrax when I had an Anthrax patch on my bag. "No, dude I do not. I'm just really into infectious diseases."
