- Ronan Roy's story starts with a bunch of academic failures. He flunked multiple times in school and when he wrote his 10th board exams, Ronan suffered another setback.
Just after his 10th exams, Ronan's family moved to Kolkata. The city of culture demanded Ronan redo his 10th to move forward with his life. These academic failures prepared Ronan for setbacks early in life. Today, Deputy General Manager at Mahindra Group, Ronan's story is inspiring for many of us.
In Kolkata, Ronan next went on to study films in his bachelor degree along with math honours because he was passionate about films. Thinking that Maths would be less rote work, Ronan realised that he was mistaken about math and it involves a lot of rote learning!
Continuing his career, Ronan wrote the CAT to get into MICA and study advertising. But having scored well in CAT, he instead decided to get into IIM Indore. Here at IIM Indore, Ronan shares how he spent a lot of his time holed up in his rooms and watching films.
But here finally, Ronan experienced a variety of lectures that he was not auditing and learnt about various subjects. He gained a depth of knowledge and was placed in Mahindra.
At Mahindra initially, Ronan started with selling tractors to rural regions. He shares how he experienced another India in these places. Talking about the impact his work had on people's lives, Ronan shares how he managed to help a farmer use a tractor instead of an ox cart to farm his land, thus increasing his life span.
On the flip side, Ronan also noticed the poverty, unemployment and other cons that are a part of our economy. He shares how this makes him a more grounded person and helps him see things in perspective.
Filled with insights on how to make the best of b-school life, how to approach work and life, and more, this talk with Ronan will help you figure out how you need to progress next. A must watch. Here's a few highlights:
Have a breadth of exposure rather than a very narrow set of exposure if you can.
At B-School, you can ask friends and peers to help you recognize and overcome your weaknesses, instead of doing it all yourself.
In the long run, the most valuable thing that’s going to come out of the MBA degree is your friends.
As you grow in your career, you must learn to relinquish control and learn to trust people to do their jobs.
