What a great video, really got me thinking about my own style influences and icons over the years. Most of my selections would be very similar to yours, especially Connery and Niven. This has really got me thinking....

Hi Ash, in truth there are so many people that influence us, and Whilst I personally consider the old and bolds, Cary Grant, David Niven, Sean Connery, Roger Moore and Michael Caine, there are many others as well. But I am also influenced by younger individuals, and I think these will be the people the next generations will be looking at for inspiration in years to come. Really glad you enjoyed the video and found it to be thought provoking 🙂

I thought you were going to not mention King Charles III for a second! Always immaculately dressed and no greater ambassador for British tailoring IMO. His commitment to repairing and rewearing clothes for years is also impressive. Agree wholeheartedly with all your choices! 🙂

I agree with you, his frugalness has been well documented and and highly commended. For the very reasons you mentioned I had to have him on my list 🙂 Thanks for your views and continued support Yoric🙂

John Gilbert and Clark Gable. I love the high rise and pleated trousers that Gable wore. I do the same with cuffs. John Gilbert found Greta Garbo. Need I say more? Outstanding couple. I also love Bogart's ivory dinner jacket in Casablanca. So elegant. I copied that for my own wedding.

Greetings, sorry, I'm coming from Mr. Jones' version of your list, but now on to the original!
(and I really have no excuse to go with yours as the second one... you are one of the rare gentlemen who even sport the same beard [mostly] as I do)
I'm really happy you included Colin Firth, loved him in context in Kingsman in the super dapper navy pin-striped double breasted suit - actually made me get a mtm suit like this😅.
And as I said over at The Chaps Guide, I'd include two historical gentlemen with HM Edward VII for all his sartorial inventions, the last button remaining undone; bringing a hunting hat from the Taunus mountains into full blown fashion (the Homburg), and from a bit further down the road, though overlapping in biographic time frames, would be Mr. Stresemann who managed to popularize the stroller suit to such a degree as appropriate dress for a working politician that to this day it's simply known as "the Stresemann" in Germany - also the name (for obvious reasons: silver accents, black cap, grey striped body) for the most beautiful version of the Pelikan Souverän fountain pen.😆
    Best regards
    Raoul G. Kunz

Inspiration come in many forms, and many people will have different opinions. I used the list to demonstrate who inspires me in the past and present. HM Edward VII and Stresemann a good choices as style icons. Glad you were inspired enough be Colin Firth to but a MTM 👍

Greetings, I want to applaud you on your selection of men's style icons, however, I would be remiss if I didn't say I was a bit disappointed that your list did not include Pierce Brosnan who has been an inspiration for me all the way bay to his Remington Steele days!

Thank you for your great comment and I'm pleased you include Pierce Brosnan in your personal list. There are so many people that inspire me, so I choose people that inspired me in the past and also now in the present ands I tried to keep it down to the small number for the video. Remington Steele - now there a blast from the past 😆 and thank you for your support for the channel 👍

Great choices, I had to look up Nick Foulkes, I can see why you choice him and as for Tom Cruise, I think its fair to say, he looks good in a suit and has over the last few years become more sharply dressed and a lot more people now comment on his looks. Glad you enjoyed the video Stu 🙂

Can’t object to any of the icons you referenced. GREAT call on Idris Elba (that guy should be the next James Bond). Couple more that come to my mind….
40’s/50’s era - Bogart; Omar Sharif
Modern era - Clooney; Tom Cruise (he’s stepped it up a lot lately); Becks (see, Tom Cruise)
Human beings (as opposed to celebs) - Tom Chamberlin; Kirby Allison; Nick Foulkes; Eddie Sahakian.

One of my personal favourites is an American professor: ANDRE CHURCHWELL. You can find quite an array of photographs on a site that YT does not want me to name starting with "Pin...."

Most of the style icons tend to be tall men, which carries off a suit well. I have about 8 suits being nearly 6 ft tall i feel good . No one where i live seems to wear a suit … shame.

    • @TheBritishDapper
      @TheBritishDapper  10 месяцев назад

It does sound like you like the ideal height for a suit wearer and if I were you I'd try and find excuses for wearing one. Private clubs and groups can sometimes be the answer, it's a shame not so many people wear a suit in this day and age. I would note though that I have noticed more people in cities wear them rather than in towns. Thanks for your continued support for the channel 🙂

Great choice of style icons here, Chris, and I am thankful that you did not include Peter Wyngarde’s TV alter ego, Jason King, among them! In the early 1990s, I once saw Sean Connery in the Paul Hamlyn Hall at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London. He was dressed all in black in a roll-neck sweater and Nehru collar jacket. A striking man if ever there was one. In this present age where - IMHO - men’s fashion has gone too casual, any gent in the public eye who wears a suit or the sharper end of casual attire, gets my vote; Idris Elba, Mark Strong, and Colin Firth, most definitely, but equally George Clooney, Pierce Brosnan, Charles Dance and the Malaysian actor, Henry Golding, are others I consider worthy of note.
Films and TV have obviously influenced clothing fashions, but I have come across a lot of great clothing ideas for men on fashion photo compilations on RUclips. However, the biggest positive impact for me personally has come from men’s style channels like this one. 😊

Glad you enjoyed the video John, I was never a fan of Peter Wyngarde’s onscreen style 😆. I think there has never been a better time to stand out from the crowd of jeans, t-shirts and grabby trainers, and so easy to do, which always seems to get compliments. You added some great names to the list. Influences are around us all the time, and thank you for your kind words about the channel🙂

Agree as well. His personal tailoring, a lot from Tom Ford, is always cut too slim. His sleeves riding up on him, his jacket button looking like it wants to jump in our face. But I do have to commend him on his charisma and his whole style in general. A good example for fitting tailoring would be Casino Royale where they had not yet shrunken the suit and it does look a lot better. (Also way more practical for a secret agent who has to move a lot in his suit.)
