It's funny to me is when people say "hurr durrr it's a fictional character no one cares", like, why don't they just make all of the characters completely fictional then? Why name them after IRL gods in the first place (or even after any historical/mythological figure or reference for that matter?) Afaik, Ayaka isn't named after anyone. Neither is Amber, Klee, Chongyun, Gaming, Shinobu, Shenhe...

That's also the thing that annoys me the most, while it's still controversial it is way less if you don't give the name of a black god to a bleached character, it's like you're doing it on purpose at that point

@@itssythoWould there sales really go down that bad. I think dont even hoyo has accurate data on that since most of the coloured characters have bad kits and only cyno has a banner.
This is definitely playing it safe but it could all be for nothing since a characters story and kit matters alot.

Genshin has their on ways for choosing names for playable characters for their respective regions. Generally, for Mondstadt characters they use real names or in case of Venti they create it from scratch on a source language basis (Latin for this example)
Names of characters from Liyue are not real names. They're just a bunch of words that create a theme for a character. For example, Sangonomiya Kokomi literally means Coral Shrine Mind Sea.
With Sumeru they used actual names like Nilou (lotus flower), names of historical figures like Tighnari and Alhaitham or they created their own based on source language like Cyno.
In Fontaine characters use actual names like Emilie, for instance. But they use names of actual people, like Freminet and Wriothesley. They create their own, like Neuvillette (literally "new city"), or some other stuff, like Clorinde is named after a ship, Chevreuse after a city, Furina, Navia, Sigewinne are named after deities/creatures from all around Europe like Greece, Germany, Italy etc.
Natlan takes its names mostly from deities of their respective cultures as well as actual names like Citlali for example.
Names of Genshin characters are chosen to match the theme of a character. For example, above mentioned Freminet. He takes his name after a French Diver because this character is a diver. I've never seen anyone complaining about his name being taken from historical figure. With Furina I've never seen a single person who complained about her name being taken from the Greek mythological figures. Especially, when it fits her theme of fate.
Also correct me if I'm wrong, but there was a post on reddit of actual Yoruba People saying that the god of heavens bullshit is actually a misinformation as in that region Olorun is a local name for a Christian God, meaning "God" as the main religion there is Christianity.
And another argument is that many African deities are portrayed as paper white/colorless figures or they have no physical appearance at all, similar to the Christian God, whose old-man-with-white-beard-look was borrowed from the Greek depiction of Zeus.
Don't get me wrong. I'm all for characters with darker skin tones, however, I'm annoyed by the nitpicking and hating on regions, such as Natlan and Sumeru for cultural appropriation, creating a culture mix bags etc. yet these same people have nothing to say against Fontaine and Mondstadt, which were created on the exact same rules, just without the skin color aspect.

Cyno, Candice, Sethos aren’t dark skinned at all. I would say they are a light tan. The darkest character is literally an npc enemy

The team that works in Genshin Impact is not lazy. It's very obvious that they put WORK into studying and integrating textile, architecture, myths/folklore, music/instruments, dance, theater, performance, history, landscape/biomes, biodiversity, text/runes/language, food/cuisine/spices, religion, and jewelry into the game of Genshin Impact. It's undeniable that the Genshin Team goes OUT OF THEIR WAY to incorporate so much detail because they have to take from what they studied to translate into their game. So if they go out of their way to be inclusive of these elements it is also undeniable that they go OUT OF THEIR WAY to exclude the people past a certain complexion/skin colour and hair texture who are from the cultures and nations they have taken from. I can accept that brown and black people past a certain shade or complexion with a certain texture of hair is undesirable, unattractive, ugly, and something that needs to be censored, sabotaged or caricatured in their game to be accepted by the consumer market in an openly communist, sexist, classist, and racist society like China. But, I cannot accept people who trivialize it with, "it's just a game" when the CN fan base is literally making slave/cotton picking jokes (silk flower picking).
The CN community claiming that black people are out "out of place in Natlan" when the fictional pyro nation has borrowed alot of world building elements from the culture, geology, music, food, customs, etc. from the real world nations of said black people is just so hurtful to me. We're out of place when surrounded by the elements that belong to us? That is what I cannot bear to accept.
I can't berate people into being nice, kind, or good. But I'm allowed to say what I feel is wrong with a game that I love.

Don’t be hurt by these idiots, Hoyo has made it a personal goal of their’s to make sure everyone playing has a terrible time and feel’s hated by them lol they add stuff that is based on actual locations then say it’s just fictional lol
If it’s fictional then why you put so much effort into learning about these places and cultures?
Maybe so you can f**king steal the culture without showing any respect for the actual people there it’s literally disrespectful and if someone did it to china they’d be mad as hell lol trust me china is a country of babies they cry over the stupidest nonsensical shit then say.. why you annoyed when ever they do something lol
Not all of china of course.

    • @itssytho

You're totally right, but as I said the majority of hoyo's decisions revolve around money, and if the biggest (and scariest) community they've got doesn't hide that they'd find a black character revolting that would mean less people buying it, and more hate from the CN community that would surely not help them. It's clear that the team put a lot of effort into making regions and characters, but if they imagine the market plummeting once they release a black character it's also clear that they would not do that. They aren't morally obligated there, and most of their closest community would hate them for it if they did it, actually sickening.
