One of my favourite Nationals. AP McCoy could have gone too early, but waited for The Elbow, then went for everything. Brilliant ride + brilliant horse = famous win.
Well, it is New Year's day and have just watched (again) the great man, AP McCoy, and I want to wish him all the best now that he is now Sir Anthony Peter McCoy. For me Tony is one of the greatest sportsmen certainly of my lifetime and I am just so proud of the man!! Happy New Year, AP!!
I loved the way the jockey was trying his hardest to get king john's castle to move but the horse just would not budge.Just the way he stood there with his head and ears up and just watched the others run off.
i work for john quinn who trains the grey gelding, character building, its such a great pleasure to have a horse of ours in the grand national and although he didnt win, he finished and didnt fall. bring it on again 2mora.
The fences are smaller and are like tissue paper .They fall to pieces when the Horse jumps over. A classic race of skill and stamina is now just an ordinary everyday race. Thanks do gooders.
A combination of the two toughest equestrian sports. Steeple Chasing isnt any more cruel than the super bowl would be if you had to both deal with the football AND a soccer ball! You MUST give these jockeys and horses props. Anyone who things this isnt sport doesnt even deserve to be left in the presence of any living creature.
Good comparison. The Taxis was nuts before they changed it.It was the chasing equivalent of Russian Roulette. The size of the huge soft hedge made it almost impossible to jump out over the huge ditch on the landing side. The bank of the ditch met the landing horses at an angle of nearly 45 degrees and many horses just went "thud" into it.It was the kind of fence where not just paramedics should have attended, but a couple of priests and undertakers too.
“Tony McCoy, the winning-most national hunt rider of all time has waited a long time to land his first John Smith’s Grand National. Firsts all round: Tony McCoy, JP McManus, Jonjo O’Neill, Don’t Push It won The National” - What a fucking call that was
The horses run because the love it. This is there life. They would not be race horses if this was not the case. A human could walk in front of a car and die is that not the same thing though. we should feel privileged that these horses are doing what they are meant to be do. You haters should get a life
OMG - first time I've ever seen a steeplechase. Those are superhero horses - how the heck do you condition a horse to run that far and jump so many fences? And how the heck do those jockeys stay on in that position?? Makes me feel like quite the prat for falling off my horse in way tamer situations. How thrilling!
@Pentdad I am not an amimal rights activist, and I do actually work for a bookie. The grand national is great race and it still would be a great race with slightly smaller fences. Although there were no casualties this year (if you dont include the two from the Topham chase the previous day), there have been casualties previously and unnecessasirily so. Slightly smaller fences and perhaps fewer runners.
I didn't have a penny on DPI (I was on My Will, nevermind...) - but I've never been so happy at the result of a National. The Champ deserved it more than anyone.
The haters have won anyway Wayne as today's race shows. Though there were a few unseateds there was not a real faller in the entire first circuit. The modified fences are just kicked out of the way by the horses - how they have the ckeek to call the thing jumped at 6th Becher's Brook I do not know. It is a plain fance of easily dealt with spruce - and its actually now just another staying handicap.
i hope these people who made alterations to the fences are pleased with themselves, 5 horses have been killed in the last three nationals and about 20 since they made changes in 90, in the 60s only 4 horses were killed when the fences were bigger and so were the fields, even then one was a loose horse that injured itself and another got brought down at the water, they just cant understand that making the fences smaller is more dangerous, bigger fences would lead to a more sensible gallop
glad AP finally get his 1st national big up to the 2nd place finisher he ran his heart out hope is connections condition proper and some more luck 1 to beat next year.
I told all everyone i know and their dog to back Black Apalachi and i was screaming at the tv over the last and of all years it was McCoy who would win!!ha ha well done Tony,il get ya next time....
...backed 4 horses E/W in this race...1st of which was King John's Castle!...take a wild guess what the other 3 were!!!?... Yep...Black Apalachi, State of Play & Big Fella Thanks!
@SCOTTinHd1 sorry i'm just sick of people saying this race should be banned. it's been going for over 150 years, its a tradition almost. the course has been modified so much its barely a race anymore - the jumps used to be bigger, the ditches wider, the drops lower and the fences were stiffer. not only are the jumps now so much safer but they're less wide, to allow loose horses to run out so they don't cause pile ups.
@littlebay75 its been jumping "big" for a couple of years now. It was the same for the 2010 becher chase. Its pretty much compensating for the 3rd, 5th and 6th which seems to jump easier these days.
I think the post changes Taxis is an almost perfect test......massively challenging but not capriciously difficult. It is what the pre changes Bechers was. As you know the majority of Aintree fences are in truth no more a challenge than a stiff parks course with the 1st, 3rd, and Bechers and the Canal Turn being exceptions. The changes to the 1st and Bechers may be a step too far. Unpredictable difficulty is part of the essence of the National
Ha! I dont usually ever bet, occasionally I have had a bet on the National, once or twice, and both times got first! I picked Black Apalachi purely because I like the sound of the name, and the Appalachian Mountains are beautiful, plus the history and language of the Apalachee(I know, different spelling) Indians is cool,
@kaznryan "horses are a herd animal so of course the ones without jockeys are going to want to be with their friends." actually, no. they want to race. why would you assume every horse is friends with every other horse like a my little pony episode?
@7855waldo yeah i think he was without a jockey, often happens, if you could see it in good quality, you would see that that horse skidded along on its head :D
@krizzel36 Yeah, I meant that these horses in particular are bred and trained just for running fast. How could thay understand the risks involved. These horses will run no matter what. People are responsible for the circumstances they put their horses in. My comment was a response to people saying horses can't be forced to run, and also that even in this race one horse decided against running, and didn't leave the starting line. That's true, but is not enough to justify this race.
And also, I know horses are not "forced" to run this course. However, in comparison to humans, horses have tiny brains ;). They don't have any concept about safety other than it is safe to keep running with the pack and clearing those fences. Also, they are "thoroughly" bred, fed and trained for "full blast", that's their life. Saying that a horse like that could decide for himself if it is safe to run/jump the course, is like saying... I don't even know what would compare.
Actually, horses in their way are intelligent, and much more of their psyche is now widely understood than was previously. After their racing days are over, many thoroughbreds make excellent riding horses which don't go "full blast".
I Was There And It Was Amazing, I Betted On AP Mccoy And Don't Push The Day Before (My First Bet) An Got It Right! :) It Was Funny When One Of The Horses Wanted To Go Before The Line Thing Went xD Then It Wouldn't Go At All When It Was Ment To.
You clearly have no idea what you're talking about :/ I work in a racing stable, they are fed oats, chaff and always hay. There are no drugs, and the regulations to enter a horse into this race are extremely tight. They must be 7 years old, have over 120 rating AND have come 3rd or better in a national hunt steeplechase of over 3 miles. Go and look things up before you fire projectile bullshit.
@Delainvoltaire No none this timew, but there were two over the same course in the Topham Chase the day before. if the horses don't want to run then they wont't (King Johns Castle) but the horses do love it. Its one of those risks that you/they take.
@Mr75littlebay Still unique but over the course a competent jumper should have no undue trouble . Still a great race but no longer the remarkable test it was when I was a kid in the 1970s. The Taxis is a far more difficult test even with modification then Bechers now is.
@comeonshaymen I don't hate GN. About cruelty, try googling "slaughtering race horses". You'll find that in Australia alone "Of the 17,000 thoroughbreds born last year, only about two-thirds will ever make it to the racetrack. Of those, most suffer injuries or do not run fast enough and only about 1 to 3 per cent make it to top events." Worldwide there are ten times more bred every year. It's a huge industry and it is about money. What do you think happens to 190 000 thoroughbreds every year?
@jss1886 Why is dog fighting so different? It's an ancient sport, isn't it, and I'm sure there are dogs who are just superb and survive. It's the same here, there are winners, but there are even more those who fall. The falls are no accidents, they are prone to happen in this setting, and they have to happen for the thrills. That's what I'm against, I don't think horses are made to run or mistreated otherwise. Lower fences would not help that much safetywise, the track is just way too crowded.
@umarmaxmas agreed, i put money on him in 2009 and 2010.i thought he had it at the end.i was in for winning a nice amount but you can't take it away from tony mccoy.i hope black apalachi has something left in the tank for next year.i will put some money on him but i'm not sure about his weight and age and whether it will go against him
@SuperMw2man he has been pulled out of the race due to an injury with a torn fibre in his tendon, pity really as he ran so well last year, but better to be safe than sorry, and maybe i think they should possibly retire him as they may have no other option to do so in the end but hey 2nd in the national is still really good and if he doesn't run anymore then I'd say that would be the best thing to do
No they RACE to LIVE... or else they are just good for dog food ... or as pan-fried horse rump steak and horse meat steak tartare as searved in L'Escargot Bleu resturant in Edinburgh. Check it out!
@Pentdad Okay, horses and humans come far from being similar. Humans evolved to have brains that thrive on competition, we can't mentally bear it to just sit around all day. Horses, on the other hand, have nothing in their mind but mating and eating. They eat to live. They mate for life. As you can see, in the wild, horses need no such mental stimulation as running around, risking their lives and gene pool just to be a superstar winner racehorse... They are simplistic creatures, really.
@Pentdad The point of animal rights groups is to stand up for animals who cannot speak out for their own rights. Do you really think that every single horse out on that field wants to be there instead of grazing on a nice, grassy field? Would they really risk their lives on a racecourse only to bring their owners pride? It's not about what YOU want. The horses are the ones running. I'm not against racing entirely, only many aspects of it.
Here is the prochasing rationale in this brief conversation: It's all good, because horses like this and horses know what is good for them. It's ok, because it's traditional. It's ok, because it's still happening, if it were unsafe it would have been stopped a long time ago. It's ok because these horses are treated well. It's ok because there are worse animal cruelty cases elsewhere. And a bird once got killed at a cricket match. My point: There is obviously not enough room for good jumps.
@taykyl001 And then what happens to all the horses in training? And all the horses used for breeding? No racing = no breeding = no need for thousands of horses, so they all get put down. And tens of thousands of jobs lost. That's not a great solution, is it??
@jss1886 I'm sorry, my mistake. I didn't mean to be impolite, I'm glad you noticed the comment anyway. I'm pretty sure I'm allowed to watch videos as much as anybody. If I come across something worth commenting, I join the conversation and express my thoughts. I'm allowed to do that too, even if I don't join the applause. I try not to get personal though. (Talking about slaughtering, surely you don't think racehorses live happily ever after and die of old age calmly in their sleep?)
what pisses me off is when a horse has an injury they want to put it down but they don't put a human down if they do themselves an injury what a load of bollocks that is
Arguments everywhere about the GN 8) okay guys, the grey at the start did not race. Why? He refused to. Horses wouldn't race if they didn't enjoy it. You can tell when you are riding them that they are enjoying the thrill of galloping because they are eager to go and you struggle to hold them. Clueless, ignorant people this is THE race for the best horses, and is fine as it is. I agree too many horses run this race. However, smaller jumps and a shorter distance = more speed + more deaths.
state of play dont ignore 20/1 big fella thanks run well last time.but the biggest danger to all is ruby ride the midnight club. dont push it i dont think so very hard to win in national back to back. gud value e/w tip as well 50/1 giles cross rider dennis oregan twice 2nd in 4mile 2f,hes a rider as well of black apalachi last yr.be smart for betting.
I don't have any problems with slaughtering animals for food. As long as the animals are treated well when they are alive and their death is quick and painless. I try to buy grocery according to what I believe is right. I do have a problem with this race, and I think the reason is blindingly obvious, as I watch the video play out again. Horses don't have enough room to clear the jumps safely at this speed. One mistake (even by a jockey) and they are down. There is no reason why that has to be.
@SCOTTinHd1 in which casing we should ban all rodeo sports cos many horses are injured and die in those too. we could also ban eventing cos dressage horses pull tendons and such, showjumpers fall and cross country horses often fall or have heart attacks or injure themselves on jumps. carriage driving should then be banned cos horses slip on the roads or get into accidents and riding school ponies get whipped and worked too long... oh wait, that means horses can only be used for eating. SHUT UP!
Hello Bud one of my favourite ever horses... Always did his absolute best, always
One of my favourite Nationals. AP McCoy could have gone too early, but waited for The Elbow, then went for everything. Brilliant ride + brilliant horse = famous win.

Smart horse, nearly as smart as Roy Roger's Trigger.

Hello Bud held up the start for about 3 mins, as he ate the starting tape. Since that moment, he has been my favourite horse. :D
AP, you just bought me a new Car Radio!
I owe you one mate! :P
Well ran!
A combination of the two toughest equestrian sports. Steeple Chasing isnt any more cruel than the super bowl would be if you had to both deal with the football AND a soccer ball! just turned 18 , work at a bookies, this was my first win , good times :) x
The Greatest NH Jockey of all time - that says it all - the great man, Tony McCoy!!!!
how many horses r in the grand national
Love how the horses who have lost their jockeys still run and jump the hurdles :)
it's crazy crazy stuff WOW !!!
Giving the horse a hug at the end. Respect.
Totally.

That was INSANE!!!! it must be a miracle just to stay ON in that race!!! Really exciting!!!
OMG - first time I've ever seen a steeplechase. Those are superhero horses - how the heck do you condition a horse to run that far and jump so many fences? Based on Black Appalachi's run this year following a fall I would agree that Maljimar is a cracking bet for next year E/W.
I didn't have a penny on DPI (I was on My Will, nevermind...) - but I've never been so happy at the result of a National. The Champ deserved it more than anyone.

delighted for mccoy but look at conna castle from the 3rd to the 25th in d orange with nose band my god did he enjoy it looked great

Does anyone know how you message the RUK RUclips channel? Can we get them to upload 2006 & 2008 which appear to be missing :(
Finally Tony wins the grand national. He deserves it.
I was there had black apalachi don't push it so a great day
Finally ... Tony McCoy won the National. Hahaha ... A mighty champion with the grand slam of jumps racing!
glad AP finally get his 1st national big up to the 2nd place finisher he ran his heart out hope is connections condition proper and some more luck 1 to beat next year.
watch that maljimar 2011 national.it was travelling like a winner when falling beachers 2nd time
I fancy character building for 2011 for a bit of National history; seems to fit the profile of a national winner. Niche Market for a good run too.
I told all everyone i know and their dog to back Black Apalachi and i was screaming at the tv over the last and of all years it was McCoy who would win!!ha ha well done Tony,il get ya next time....

Damn, I was hoping to watch a video about a Buick Grand National race a Vette...
Close enough there are lots of horses and they are racing...
The horses WANT to race. They live to race
did any1 see the ride mc coy gave folie a duex at warwick on 27th this month the man is fuck pure class
Well done! Wonderful race!
@tde1985 5 horses died during the festival - None of them in the Grand National.
Ha! I dont usually ever bet, occasionally I have had a bet on the National, once or twice, and both times got first! I picked Black Apalachi purely because I like the sound of the name, and the Appalachian Mountains are beautiful, plus the history and language of the Apalachee(I know, different spelling) Indians is cool,
@kaznryan "horses are a herd animal so of course the ones without jockeys are going to want to be with their friends." actually, no. they want to race. why would you assume every horse is friends with every other horse like a my little pony episode?
so happy for AP!!!!!
WELL DESERVED!!!!!
according to pete is my tip to everyone this year, loves soft ground 33-1 at the moment,if apt approach runs this year a superb outside chance at 66-1
The poor horses.. they have to run for ages! Some horses have heartattacks!
my cousin, i live rite beside his home house!
@brittsophie oh i see thanks ,its cruel but it puts them out of a long gruelling pain but those two horses that died suffered broken necks.
@7855waldo yeah i think he was without a jockey, often happens, if you could see it in good quality, you would see that that horse skidded along on its head :D
people say how this is cruel the jumps are just branches from about halfway up good on McCoy:)
@7855waldo yes the loose horse was My Will who had ironically fallen at exactly the same spot first time around
i ended up on charactor building and nina carberry, her bro was on the horse that refused to start:)
And also, I know horses are not "forced" to run this course. However, in comparison to humans, horses have tiny brains ;). They don't have any concept about safety other than it is safe to keep running with the pack and clearing those fences. mc coy is a legend!!!!!!!!!!
I Was There And It Was Amazing, I Betted On AP Mccoy And Don't Push The Day Before (My First Bet) An Got It Right! :)
It Was Funny When One Of The Horses Wanted To Go Before The Line Thing Went xD Then It Wouldn't Go At All When It Was Ment To.
That's some weird perspective by that super zoomed camera.
@green1773 I know what you mean, but officially, it will be an English trained winner as that is where O'Neill is based.
Excellent race this year. Anything AP gets on seems to come in at least the top 3.
You clearly have no idea what you're talking about :/
I work in a racing stable, they are fed oats, chaff and always hay. There are no drugs, and the regulations to enter a horse into this race are extremely tight. They must be 7 years old, have over 120 rating AND have come 3rd or better in a national hunt steeplechase of over 3 miles.
Go and look things up before you fire projectile bullshit.
Beechers just looks pathetic now compared to the past.
.....Bechers....you mean the 6th fence.....
Pure legend
@Delainvoltaire No none this timew, but there were two over the same course in the Topham Chase the day before. if the horses don't want to run then they wont't (King Johns Castle) but the horses do love it. Its one of those risks that you/they take.

You can take a horse to water but you can't make it drink. You can take a horse to the race track but you can't make it race.
@comeonshaymen I don't hate GN. About cruelty, try googling "slaughtering race horses". but well done to tony and dont push it
hello bud or frankie figg for 2011
Well done AP

majestic concorde and niche market for me this year, but it should be called the national lottery not the grand national!
@TurthIsIt ha ha ha! nice one!
@Pentdad

He's got my money!
@selve1966 I had a bet on him, was placed so ok. Yeah he had the race of his life. To not only complete it, but came 5th. amazing!
@frconvey I backed it and was gonna rip it up, hes in a class of his own
@koala1234ish There is, thats why 14 got round, and 7 pulled up
@23751 definatly, mccoys the greatest
what pisses me off is when a horse has an injury they want to put it down but they don't put a human down if they do themselves an injury

However, smaller jumps and a shorter distance = more speed + more deaths.
..crap camera angles...
King Johns Castle made his choice lol
state of play dont ignore 20/1 big fella thanks run well last time.but the biggest danger to all is ruby ride the midnight club. dont push it i dont think so very hard to win in national back to back. gud value e/w tip as well 50/1 giles cross rider dennis oregan twice 2nd in 4mile 2f,hes a rider as well of black apalachi last yr.be smart for betting.
Backed Black Apalachi e/w at 14's well thought he was gonna win till 3 out when he made that mistake oh well never mind well done McCoy tho
@koala1234ish
I know! I hate racehorse slaughter. Because THAT IS CRUEL
The GN is the worlds best race. IT ISNT CRUEL
SHUT UP!
@MYBIGKINDHEART because you can't fix a horses broken leg. not because they can't be bothered and they kill the horse to put them out of its misery
