  • 2001 Maxima Neutral Safety (Range or Inhibitor) Switch Replacement | JATCO - RE4F04B
For 4+ Years MadMax had been given a problem of not starting all the time in park. But if you jiggle the shifter or put neutral it would start. now it’s had gotten worse and I will not be able to sell the car this way easily. So I decided to put in a new neutral safety switch.
At the time I got it the part was about $31 including shipping costs
estimates for having a shop do it are $200+
the other possibility for this behavior is a missing Transmission cable Bushing.
in this case the cable is still attached but there is too much play in its fitment.
Future video will cover this. but the fix is to replace the cable bushing. which you can not buy at the dealer ( they will only sell you the cable with the bushing already in it) but at bushingfix.com or similar parts found on ebay and amazon. for a limited number of cars you can find the bushing at your local auto parts store made by Dorman
part WVE 1S5427 which is under the NGK companies umbrella.

This is on a 2001 Maxima but any car that has the same transmission , JATCO RE4F04B, this should work. in concept it should work for most any car with automatic transmission.
This switch also works as the backup light switch.
According to parts lookup this part works for the following :
    INFINITI G20 1999-2002
    INFINITI I30 2000-2001
    INFINITI I35 2002-2004
    MERCURY VILLAGER 1999-2002
    NISSAN 200SX 1995-1998
    NISSAN ALTIMA 1998-2004
    NISSAN MAXIMA 2000-2004
    NISSAN QUEST 1999-2006
    NISSAN SENTRA 1998-2005
    NISSAN VERSA 2009-2011
    NISSAN X-TRAIL 2002-2007
I am NOT sponsored by rock auto or NGK

I get to do this job on a 1997 Infinity i30 (sister model of the Nissan Maxima). First time of a “no-start.” It also had an issue that you had to bump the shifter, while in park, for it to start.

Check the shift cable bushing. Under the shifter. That is what mine actually ended up being.
The 1997 maxima/i30 is a slight different neutral safety switch then the 2001 model year its plug is different but the alignment process is the same .
I do have a video on replacing the shift cable bushing. I think the same part should fit 1997 as was as my 2001. Double check that.
My 2001 is a re4f04b transmission I think the older maxima is a Re4f04a transmission
