Part of developing as a mini painter has been learning when to say, "I'm done here". Being able to declare a model painted enough, so I can pop them in the display case and work on other things.

I find that returning to view those “done here” models and noticing something I missed or could be better, it helps tell a story of that model that helps me in memory of painting that model: “oh yea, I remember I was gonna paint that one thing and forgot…”

Black primer, grey drybrush, light white drybrush and then contrast/speedpaint/dipping ink. This is my jam now and I'm painting more minis than ever before. I even gave up on true metallics in favor of basilicanum grey (steel), nardzeg yellow (gold), agaros dunes (brass) and snakebite leather (copper).

    My process looks pretty much like this at the minute;
    1) Prime with airbrush. 2) Zenithal. 3) Base coat with airbrush, pretty much just a coloured zenithal. 4) Oil wash for the shadows. 5) Paint in the details and highlights by hand.
It's crude, but it's quick and the oil washes do an amazing job of creating deep shadows and smooth transitions. Obviously this works better for models that are mostly single colour, so it's great for monsters, less useful for characters with lots of clothing and gear. It is fast though and well suited to batch painting.

Painting to a tabletop quality is key to fielding a good looking army quickly. Everyone knows that painted models fight better! Hand tremors killed any hopes of being a great model painter for me. But, I can pump out a good looking tabletop quality army fairly quickly. And as you said Adam, planning is key. Nice video, thank you.

Been doing this for a while (not the contrast part). When I do stuff like zombie hordes, or hordes of cultists, or similar 'rough' groups I always pick out 10-11 colours that work well together, and do them one colour at a time - as you do. A pouch for one guy, pants fort he next, scarf for the third guy, etc. Gives you that rag-tag look while keeping the entire group "linked" through a common palette. Really effective and really easy to do.

In this video, Atom tells you about Goblin fashion. I'll echo what Atom is stating in this video - batch painting and Contrast paint helps immensely when painting a number of models. I recently painted 8 Chainwrasps in an evening (2 or 3 hours at the most), for use as Ghosts in Warhammer Quest 1995. Fastest paint job on a "unit" I've achieved in a long while and they look pretty good.

As an experienced model maker but noob to minis one of the (many!) lessons I have learned from watching Vincie V's videos is that I have to make a conscious decision as to where I am happy to sit on the time vs. quality scale. As I only paint minis as a palate cleanser after all the greys of spaceships I honestly don't want to be investing tens (let alone hundreds!) of hours on a single miniature. Vince has forced me to confront the fact that in this case I won't be turning out Golden Demon winners! Generally as a perfectionist this has been a difficult lesson to learn but rather liberating. Getting comfortable with the quality I am able to achieve in the time I am willing to spend has been an interesting shift. It has been exemplified by one of my new favourite sayings, also given to me by Vince - "It's okay!" 😁

@@tabletopminions Sorry to mention Vince so much in a reply to your video! 😮 This video was very useful for me to see that even experienced painters can be willing to dial back the quality significantly to save time, always with the option to return to the minis if they feel that they are willing to invest extra time to improve them. As a noob it would still take me 4 times as long to reach this standard as you took but hopefully with practice and experience that will improve 👍😁

Very similar to my processes especially with my changes to zenithal and speedpaints. I found having two units or sets of minis ready to put paint on and painting a color AS FAR as I feel like, really helps with production and managing my interest level. Switching colors when I feel it dragging, or when I want to advance a set along, takes the pressure off. It means color sequences sometimes change from group of models to group. Sooner on the table is better!

I have been finding that things like robes - even if they have some texture - end up looking less "contrasty" and more "splotchy" when I paint them with contrast paint, even when I try hard to just use a single brush stroke and not go back with my brush. Or perhaps these are areas on the mini that I shouldn't even be trying to use contrast paint, and instead fall back to normal paint?

Question (with a bit of context): I’m nearly at the point where my miniatures collection is complete. I have 10 armies across 3 game systems, and soon I’ll be just keeping on top of new releases for 3 of those. Once I’ve painted around 49 more models I’ll be basically done.
I’ve been getting models most months for several years now, I kinda fell into the category of whale. Other armies and game systems just aren’t appealing to me (can you blame me after 10 armies over 3 game systems). But it’s left me feeling weirdly empty.

Not the best build up story, since you made a lot of mistakes. But you delivered the point in the end.

That's my issue with contrast paints: the models are done yes but look like poo (mine not yours). I prefer painting over a dark brown, mid grey, off white zenithal and use that as a guide to apply thin coats of normal paints. Might use the contrasts as small filters or to correct some recesses but over all it's fast enough for me and the results look better xp

Hate to say it, but since you painted goblins, you were in fact a goblin fasion designer.

What's a fella gotta do to see some goblin green bases around here? No one likes the old-timey bases anymore... flock, yellow highlights?

I’m a flock-hater from way back, and I’ve always preferred my rims being black. Thanks for watching!

@@tabletopminions the reason I love that style is it seemed so absurd the old 'eavy Metals would finish those beautiful figures with such plain, ugly bases. Even though lots of people were painting intricate bases in all sorts of other ways at the time. I wonder why.
