I think i need to start thinking about how i will be able to watch british tv here, outside the uk, when it will leave the satelite. Feeling a bit sick right now..
Feels just like a freeview rebrand to nudge everyone towards IP tv than a whole new concept. It doesn't look as slick/polished/moden as Sky glass - as a ex tv engineer it looks as if they have kept it as simple as possible to run on low end hardware at the expense of making it look more stylish, modern and fit for the next 10 to 20 years. Will other streaming providers have a presence? Netflix, Disney+ etc? How closed off will the software/hardware be? Can users install apps, customise things, be allowed some freedom or will it be a closed, locked down system - you get what you get and tough if you don't like it. Equally I would be interested in how the system will update and the extent at which it can update, both in terms of individual apps and the system as a whole. If at a later date new services develop, new front ends come about, will older devices be upgradable or will there just be a fragmentation of devices all capable of only doing certain things which to me goes against the whole idea of Freely being a universal, same on every device concept. I get that its free so shouldn't expect everything - but if pretty much all devices will have it installed with no other option in the distant future (except sky, virgin etc) then it needs to encompass everything, not expect users to have seperate devices such as firesticks etc to get some services, or run some apps.
I think there's things to remember. Sky won twice. Also I'd really hope that they come up with maybe having a box rather than a new TV, because again in many households they wouldnt be able to get a new TV because that'll be another £400 or so at the start and to be honest I don't think my partner would see it as a good enough reason to get a TV :)
I'd use it if my tv's get a firmware update to integrate it, like it has Freeview play and Freesat, or if it gets released as a smart tv app. But definitely not replacing hardware (TV's) for it and certainly not prepared to buy a STB for it.
I am quite intrigued, but also thinking about how I would need to adjust my business over the next 10yrs. I am a TV aerial & satellite dish engineer based in Kent.
Learn switches and network cabling. Instead of running aerial cabling around houses to each TV location, people will want ethernet instead. WiFi is great and has come on a long way but hard wired is always the best and most reliable for streaming.

As another commenter has said I hope they bring something out for other makes of TV but I doubt it if they have committed to a deal with one company.
Surely they will bring out a digital box or usb stick type thing. I’m sure that’s what they launched free view with and that worked with even the oldest style tvs. It would really hurt them if they didn’t make it as cheap and as easy for people to switch over. Having to buy a new tv seem ridiculous to me.
I think it's a good idea in principle. But I'm guessing that you'll lose the ability to record programmes, which I currently do with Freesat. A lot of channels don't have catch-up services, or if they do, they're unreliable and of poor quality. Even the major channels' catch-up services don't always match the picture quality from the broadcast signal, often zooming in a bit on the picture. (And I sometimes have to switch between devices to find one that works best with a given service - my Fire stick really doesn't like ITVX! ) My other concern centres on regional variants. With Freesat, I can put in a postcode for my preferred region, rather than settling for whatever might be the default. That's a feature I wouldn't want to lose, as I'd rather have quick access to S4C in preference to Channel 4. I'm sure Freely is the way things are going but, in particular, IPTV will surely have to improve considerably for integration to be seamless.
My issue with it is how slow it could wind up being. LG Channels are incredibly slow for example compared to Sky, so who's to say Freely would be any faster?
Surely they will bring out an app to install it on older smart tvs?? Dont think they are going to convert everyone over by 2030 if we all have to buy a new tv or freely box.. or am I missing something? does this mean freesat changes into a freely service? So more channels over dish? I hate having everything on internet.. if it goes down your buggered im keeping my dish as back up
It looks good but if it really is TV-only I’m a bit disappointed and also a bit surprised. If one or more manufacturers sold a stand-alone Freely box along the lines of the Sky Stream puck I would go out and buy one pretty much on day 1 to have a look and might well ditch my Sky sub because I hardly watch any of the extra Sky channels but like the convenience of having everything via broadband to avoid getting dropouts in bad weather because of the crappy communal aerial in my block of flats and the bad reception area where I live.
Going to fail out of the gate then if they are not working with LG/Samsung Sony as the 3 biggest manufacturers and install base, or even an Apple TV app or Firestick/Roku, you go where the market is, nobody with an LG Oled is going to be swapping that for a Hisense, will see how it develops, I’ve recently ditched sky Q so a Freely App on Apple or LG would be ideal.
I've heard Freely ain't going to work with existing kit, so that's another blow. I'll just get a 70cm dish installed and watch Eutelsat's free to air digital channels which I can do (my Sharp AQUOS 50" Smart TV comes programmed with several international and European satellites in the TV's memory that I can pick up with a suitable sized dish installed). Gonna fuck British TV off altogether when it all goes online, i'm not going to Freely because Everyone TV says I should!
I don't watch TV but catch up streaming as long as it isn't live being broadcast by a terrestrial / satellite TV station or iPlayer isn't subject to TV licence. Users might find it hard to stay the if it's integrated so you just fall easily into it rather than separated as it's is now. I definitely won't be buying a TV in the future.
Well if the recent new Freesat boxes are anything to go by, this is the worst STB that I have ever had, the UI is poor and extremely clunky and has issues where starting playback will glitch and crash the playback… Considering they have reference to decent basic functions that have been available on something like Sky HD for years and even previous Humax boxes… these Freesat boxes are crap for the money they are charging
Who wants Sky, when it’s a ripoff??? No one should pay for Sky when they advertise. That’s what advertising does, it pays so that you don’t pay for it and yet Sky wants your money. What a CON!!
I think aerials will remain with us for a quite a long time. It will be the only thing some people have got also a backup. FM radio too, practical for cars. On the other had, satellite TV is pretty ghastly and WILL be replaced by internet TV.
If there s no freely set top box it’s not going to be a successful venture because no one who has upgraded to a new smart tv is not going to invest in another tv set just to get freely
So its not actually free then. Your initial outlay of £300-£400+ for a new TV when most people who use tech already have a decent tv so that's a bad start, people who already have broadband won't mind so much as that's already covered in the monthly cost, but no new uptake just for this. The must offer every single channel in HD as SD is out for most and free 4k channel offerings. Its not much point giving it to people free without a good a reason to change eventually. Boxes should be offered at launch as well with 4K real AI upscaling for tech buffs and built in future proofs for at least 5 years with software upgrades like Sky. It should also include non british free channels from global broadcasters for users to choose if they wish. Opening up a new audience will give incentives to SKY to offer channels on the platform as well for ad revenue. The likes of SKY & VM are outpricing their business model and this would be a good platform for them to cut costs.
I get fedup at times especially after 9pm when I get alot of interference only on the commercial channels from something, god knows what it is. I even have two 5G filters. Using broadband is a good idea, but then again, you need the internet which you need to pay for. Is there an App for that??? Why buy this and that? COME ON Freely should just be App based.
I am not convinced. I use freesat which covers alot more channels. I see freely as a faff, switching between services. I really don't understand why it is called freely, it is not TV license will still need to be paid. I have decent satellite box and would not change. If I need to stream I use the services which are readily available now. One selling points from freely about EPG is honestly laughable. ATMOS, UHD content could sell it, but atmos coming from two audio channels from the TV, na I don't think so.
@@sie4431 Freeview is also available with more channels, if you have an aerial. I cannot believe that most people purely get television services from the Internet.
If “free” in Freeview and Freely is rather subjective, I wonder how much “independence” is there in the “I” of ITV. If this is what comes with DVB-T, I take back everything I’ve thought about ATSC.
Anything for a TV platform that uses the word FREE in it should be banned because it's not free you have to pay the BBC to watch the live as shown content from any station that broadcasts on the platform. If people need to buy new equipment like a TV then I can see, IMHO, that there will be hundreds of thousands if not millions of TV licence cancellations.
You have to pay the TV license regardless. You don't get Sky because your have a TV license People won't be cancelling their licenses because nothing will change
Everything is starting to rely on unstable internet and just like what happened this week the worlds banks airports etc come crashing down due to a microsoft issue. We should also not have landlines and tv relying on governments and there ability to monitor and see everything and disconnect you easily.
Well if it has to rely on WiFi like Sky Q then don’t bother. The home WiFi network is too crowded and unable to sustain a 100% best quality picture. Needs to be Ethernet only.
My thoughts exactly. I ain’t forking out hundreds of ££s I ain’t got on a whole new TV when I am already satisfied with the one I’ve got now. If they don’t bring out a box or make this downloadable on current smart TVs then i think Freely will be dead on arrival.
Why default to IP when aerial is also available? It should be a choice by the user, if I use IPTV it will use up bandwidth into my house, but if I use aerial or dish then there are no bandwidth restrictions. But of course with IP TV you are going to be tracked totally and it is likely that trying to block trackers will be impossible, you won't be able to use a PiHole etc to bury the data as the data is being used to provide you with TV. This is going to be a privacy nightmare, look forward to having your searches for your wifes birthday to pop-up in adverts between your shows when you sit down together to watch TV. But they will probably allow you to indicate who is watch so that this doesn't happen. so instead of trackers just following the household, they will follow each individual member of the household.
"Freely" so i have to purchase a new TV, get a TV licence and get an Internet subscription? That doesn't sound free to me should change its name to "costly " epic fail !

I already Got New Tv Hope freely
They switched analogue off okay, hopefully users will switch over okay, with copper phasing out people will need to switch over.
Will Freely beat its rival Sky?
ehhhh for now, nah
Who wants Sky, when it’s a ripoff??? No one should pay for Sky when they advertise. That’s what advertising does, it pays so that you don’t pay for it and yet Sky wants your money. What a CON!!
I think aerials will remain with us for a quite a long time. It will be the only thing some people have got also a backup. FM radio too, practical for cars. On the other had, satellite TV is pretty ghastly and WILL be replaced by internet TV.
The UI kinda reminds me of the current Xbox interface.
This is going to fail just because it’s not backwards compatible
Need to pay tv tax or free ?
There is no "tv [sic] tax".
And it won't be free as you need a Freely TV licence, else it be a criminal offence, so Freely will be forcing subscriptions upon the public then.
Linear TV channels are declining, in 10 years will there be many Linear channels left?
Pity they don’t have a app you could use. Bit costly having to buy a new tv
This is for people without cable/satellite
@@sie4431 Freeview is also available with more channels, if you have an aerial. I cannot believe that most people purely get television services from the Internet.
If “free” in Freeview and Freely is rather subjective, I wonder how much “independence” is there in the “I” of ITV.
If this is what comes with DVB-T, I take back everything I’ve thought about ATSC.
But soon, DVB-T will switch to DVB-T2
@@julianhanc8272Hopefully, ITV will retain the 2006 branding across all channels next month.
@@julianhanc8272already has tbh
Anything for a TV platform that uses the word FREE in it should be banned because it's not free you have to pay the BBC to watch the live as shown content from any station that broadcasts on the platform. If people need to buy new equipment like a TV then I can see, IMHO, that there will be hundreds of thousands if not millions of TV licence cancellations.
You have to pay the TV license regardless. You don't get Sky because your have a TV license
People won't be cancelling their licenses because nothing will change
Everything is starting to rely on unstable internet and just like what happened this week the worlds banks airports etc come crashing down due to a microsoft issue. We should also not have landlines and tv relying on governments and there ability to monitor and see everything and disconnect you easily.
Well if it has to rely on WiFi like Sky Q then don’t bother. The home WiFi network is too crowded and unable to sustain a 100% best quality picture. Needs to be Ethernet only.
Freely has to be a downloadable APP to add to any existing smart TV. Having to buy a whole new TV to have it is nonsense.
👍🏻
I'd rather record programmes so I can skip through the adverts..streaming is painful.
Free if you pay for a TV licence to watch live broadcast TV channels lol
I want tv licence free no dodgy Rambo. 😅
Did you make yourself look like noel edmond's lovechild on purpose?
Will I replace my expensive Sony TV for a cheap shit Hisense TV. No way!. Unless they bring out a box or apps for Apple, Android etc, this will fail!!
My thoughts exactly. I ain’t forking out hundreds of ££s I ain’t got on a whole new TV when I am already satisfied with the one I’ve got now. If they don’t bring out a box or make this downloadable on current smart TVs then i think Freely will be dead on arrival.
RUclips is free unless u h9 premium
Noel Edmonds has let himself go...
😂😂
"As viewers replace their freeview & freesat devices"...yeah,we're being forced to replace them because of streaming nonsense.
"Freely" so i have to purchase a new TV, get a TV licence and get an Internet subscription? That doesn't sound free to me should change its name to "costly " epic fail !
You expect new TV's, and broadband to be provided free? You need a licence to watch or record live TV. This is not a Freely charge.
Freely is basically a rip-off of Pluto TV.
Pluto TV is actually free, though.
IPTV technically existed before pluto TV they were not the first
@@OM19_MO79 But the UI looks very similar to Pluto TV.
You know where the EU can go...for starters, stop dictating to Britain!
🥱
It never was.
