    A “pantaloon” is a foolish pantomime character. The lyrics suggest that time will make fools out of us all. The protagonist watches his grandfather’s mind deteriorate followed by his father’s. As he grows older, he begins to follow in his elder’s footsteps despite his attempts to do the opposite, losing his mind just as they did.

      Thankyou. Pantaloon is a literal meaning to this SENIOR. Keep reaching for music and truth.

      I agree with everything you said above, but I think also to add to that. We just see these other two men whom he clearly respects lose their mind and we don’t know why. But finally, we do know why because how could anybody stay sane With death lurking over your shoulder? It’s an unknown unknowable void. And plus your friends they fertilize the ground that you’re walking on. How could that not make you insane of course you’re gonna lose your mind surrounded by death knowing your next or at least soon. Almost makes more sense honestly if we embraced going out on our own terms

    Pantaloon: “He’s been around so long he changed his meaning of a chair now.”
    Kitchen Sink: “I’m a kitchen sink, you don’t know what that means, because a kitchen sink to you, is not a kitchen sink to me.”

  • @ashleyc.3176
    @ashleyc.3176 2 дня назад +37

    a lot of tyler's lyricism revolves around faith (especially in this album) but ALSO around the fear of growing older. it's really prevalent in his older work, and watching his mindset shift as his work grows (in legend, oldies station) is honestly kind of beautiful

    • @jc_klay
      @jc_klay День назад

      Yesss!! Some of us have found that character arc along with him in life. Oldies station being a favorite for this very reason. 💌

    Yay!! This song is def weird but its one of my favs from this album! Excited to see more from this album! Thanks guys!
    P.s. a Pantaloon is "a foolish old man" sometimes known as senile and sad sometimes it's more silly. I think he's talking more about the serious definition. Getting old and losing purpose and your wits is hard to accept and i think that's sort of what he's talking about.

  • @74angelwing
    @74angelwing 2 дня назад +18

    at the beginning of the song Ty sings" your grandpa died, when you were nine. they said he had lost his mind' i feel this song is about first his grandpa, then his dad, then him becoming old and dying and being the last one left/not remembering anyone. He even changed the meaning of a chair at the end.
    dementia runs in families i wonder how much Tyler worries about that, especially since in Legend, his other grandpa ALSO died from dementia/alzheimers so he has it doubly in his DNA. shit i just made myself sad😔

    I love this song so much, it is about Tyler's grandpa who had dementia and his fears that it may be hereditary (your dad is now the pantaloon) its incredibly poignant when complimented with Legend from Trench after his grandpa's passing

    • @The1nvisibleJeevas
      @The1nvisibleJeevas День назад

      Unless Tyler is talking about a different grandfather, the one referred to in Legend was still alive by this time. I'd like to think he's writing from the perspective of his father, who saw Tyler's great grandfather die long before Tyler was born. Now he's voicing what he imagines his father's experiencing. "Now, it's your turn to be alone/Find a wife and build yourself a home." Tyler hasn't quite reached this stage in his life yet so this seems to line up with him imagining his dad reaching maturity.

    Lyrically...this is such a hard hitting song. Its inevitable for most of us as we grow older.

    in a 2013 show tyler talked about how his grandfather had been (not in these specific words) diagnosed with dementia. in a 2018 show he would make a comment Legend, specifically the line "wish she knew you--"
    being about jenna, who started to date in 2012 and married in 2015, trench (the record legend is on) being written 17-18.
    if you listen to this album tyler is often confront death, cold, finality, and aging. moreso even on the set of songs he put on iTunes as a high schooler in 2008-2009 under his own name, entitled No Phun Intended.

    this song is about his grandpa on his father's side, the same one he years later wrote legend about. his grandpa suffered from dementia, and apparently as the lyrics go, it's something that happened to his grandpa's father and also his grandpa's grandpa. the lyrics go chronologically, and as our main character grows older he starts to lose touch with reality ultimately becoming the pantaloon. there's a pic tyler's mom posted like 10 years ago of a very young tyler (around 13 yo maybe) with his grandpa and the caption was "tyler and the pantaloon".
