There is nobody except for Tyler and Josh. I give respect to the path that he paved but TØP is Tyler and Josh!! Thank God he had his original band but also, thank God he kept on going without them!
A lot of this album is just Tyler talking directly to God; it’s not overtly religious, but it’s so clearly about faith if you really listen to it. I am *so excited* for this journey.
For context, this album was made by Tyler when he was 20. This pre-dates Josh joining the band and includes original members, Nick Thomas (bass) & Chris Salih (Drums). Chris and Josh worked together at Guitar center and Josh heard this album from him and became a fan. Josh only joined the band after Nick and Chris left. Twenty One Pilots as we know it today, Tyler and Josh, began on May 8th 2011. Josh isn't on an album recording until Vessel though. The drums on self titled and RAB are not live drums and are produced by Tyler.
Glad someone actually mentions the fact that Josh's drumming was first heard on Vessel. A lot of times people say that Josh recorded drums on regional at best when in reality the drums on self titled and RAB were all programmed by Tyler just like you said
@santtu2788 Yep. 100%. I think a lot of the early lore of this band gets lost in translation a bit amongst the fans. That's why I wanted to include this for context.
@Frk_X released on December 29, 2009. Tyler Joseph was born in 88'. So he was 21 when it released. He started writing music in high school though so it's possible that some of the songs or portions of them existed prior. No Phun Intended, the title given to a collection of solo songs Tyler put on SoundCloud would be more consistent with that timeframe.
@ yep. I do remember how on bandito tour right before performing taxi cab he said that it was one of the first songs he's ever written. Some of the songs on self titled might be from npi times but I don't think we'll ever have details about when he wrote all of these songs
fall away should be the live one with dr. blum of misterwives. absolutely amazing in every way and probably one of my favorite versions of any twenty one pilots song. Make sure to have the lyrics pulled up though because it can get a bit hard to understand in some parts (you'll know why when you hear it). Loved the video guys :) keep it up.
Fall away, addict with a pen, jhonny boy, trapdoor, A CAR A TORCH A DEATH, taxi cab, and Isle of Flightless Birds are the songs that solidified TOP for me, waiting for all of those to drop in
What's really interesting about this album is Tyler has said that he wrote the songs before he knew music had "rules". Some of the songs do follow a traditional structure, but a lot of them are very unique in the way they play out. It's also a bit more simple musically and very piano driven, though you can still hear a lot of unique synths and sounds that feel very TOP. Lyrically, though, this is probably their most raw and vulnerable album to date, and has some of the most striking lyrics you'll hear from them. I'm very excited to see you guys react to this album, because I think there's a lot that will catch you off-guard, but also a lot to love here! Can't wait!
I love Self-Titled, but it's definitely very different from the other things they serve. Not only was Tyler very young and lacking a lot of the resources he has now, both in experience and pure tech, to make the kind of crazy stuff he's making - this is also before Josh even joined the band, and they were actually a three-piece!
This sound is definitely more ‘church heavy’ music.. for lack of better words lol. That’s the play music big vibe. And so much of this is about his faith. Vessel is the album that really gets me!
There's a lot of religious imagery and themes in this album. I see "rain down and destroy me" as "at least if You (God) kill me, I'll know you exist". I also believe it's "why WON'T you let us use Your Name" as in God's Name often being replaced in the Bible with "LORD" out of respect. I LOVE IT and im super excited for yall to listen
it is "why 'would' you let us use-" I thought it could be like, why is He allowing people to take His name in vain even though He's all powerful? Or maybe why can people use His name for evil?
This record def paved the way to Clancy and Dema, the multi genre lane and personal lyrics, taxi cab and isle of flightless birds being my favs, can't wait for you guys to keep going
YES! That medieval feel you refer to made me call the genre of this album as "gothic emo pop." Dont even know it that even exists but thats what I like to call it LOL
Some background: This is like the “made in your parents’ basement” album. This features Chris and Nick, the old drummer and bassist respectively. Josh doesn’t join until Regional at Best.
Twenty One Pilots in the beginning were a lowkey Christian emo band. So a lot of it was Tyler questioning his faith and then after some albums they realized that more people felt that way and created a story around the concepts they explore in ST and RAB
This album is my soul album, this whole album screams through every part of my body… it got me through some very dark suicidal moments back then. I’m sooo happy and ready for you guys to listen to this masterpiece of an album!
With Self Tilted I also started unsure, then hooked - and now I'm , I don't even remember how many years later, excited like a little girl to see you guys react to the album that pushed me through teenagehood.
I normally don’t really watch that much music reaction content, but I really love watching you guys react to twenty one pilots! Can’t wait to see reactions to the rest of the self titled album!!
This album is one of the most honest and beautiful things done, cause it comes from the faith and the struggles of a young man trying to understand his own feelings and mind. I'm super excited to see your reactions to this awesome album!
I think this song represents Tyler's internal conflict with his faith. I'm pretty sure he even alluded to as much in an interview for Apple Music. And this album is one of their earliest works so the timing checks out.
You guys should also listen to "Time to say goodbye" which was supposed to be on the s-t album but never made it on, it was originally on their Johnny Boy EP and theyve played it live before aswell.
Here we go! This was an intro song: perfectly introducing, just as the last track is perfectly closing and between them artistry: especially Taxi cab, Trapdoor, The Pantaloon, Johny boy, March to the sea, Friend, please and Addict with a pen (shame you didn't listen to it in album version).
Tyler is Implicitly Demanding Proof of God by challenging God to strike him with lightning! Love this song and it's such a good intro to this album. * he says "why won't you let us use your name?"
Was lucky to be in Camden England this summer (2024) for ‘A Night with Twenty One Pilots’ and they played Trapdoor and the place nearly exploded… epic night!
This was very young Tyler btw . The album was officially out by 2009 which is when Tyler was 21 but he was writing and singing most of these songs way before that.
I love this song, the way the intro builds, and the transition from "churchy" sounding music to almost a carnival feel. It just feels right for a song about someone daring God to smite him.
I love that you guys are so willing to be open to the music and really try to fully experience it and appriciate it for what it is, even if it is not your cup of tea, and I love that you are honest about how you feel about the music. Love your reactions, thank you for being you.
As soon as I hear the piano in this song it melts my heart. This is a song that I choose not to play too much because I need that feeling to snap me out of a funk I sometimes get into. I love the unstructured style and the slow build to the heavier stuff then back down to the gentle close. It encapsulates so many emotions and many of the same questions I ask God about life. Why is it sometimes so unfair? Why if you have all this power can't you use it to fix the world? All these questions are like a child asking their big and strong father to help make sense of senselessness because he has the answers. It's asked with humble fervency. So excited to hear these "deep tracks" again and see them with new eyes right along with you guys!
99% of the time I listen to these songs I do so by listening to the whole album in one go, it just feels right to me. Because of that I was waiting for the next song in the video and then realized I'd have to wait, it was a jarring experience lmao. Looking forward to the next one! Also y'all MUST listen to the live performance of Fall Away ft. Dr Blum at some point
When I heard this song for the first time, the first thing I thought of is how this song was giving off circus/jester vibes and hearing it everytime, it gives me the same vibe
You guys give me the feelings I had when I first listened to this a little over a decade ago. I am really enjoying going through your journey with you. And to be in Ohio!!, the pride of a hometown band has to be that much more special while listening. Love it! P.s. Kyle- love the shirt!
I always say, though the lore wasn’t planned from the beginning, there are emotional elements and imagery in the lyrics of earlier songs that sets the stage for the lore of the future. Retrospectively there is actually a lot of foundational emotional elements where you can see where the lore developed from… It was always there.
YES SELF TITLED! so many songs on here are about his struggle with religion and staying faithful to God through all the hardships he's going through in life with depression, anxiety, etc. this is also before Josh was in the band. I'm so glad you guys are doing this album! looking forward to more
Over time this song has become my favorite of all their songs, with each listen I would notice more and more about it. Might be cause I just love how old Tyler sings so dramatically, still love their new style and refined talent but idk I've just always enjoyed the songs and voices that have flaws
Remember, josh isn't on this album. Its two other dudes
Chris Salih (drums) and Nick Thomas (Bass)
I mean, not even, they played live, but as far as I remember, this is just Tyler.
