From the age of 11, Williams attended summer courses with Andrés Segovia at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy. You may also be interested in:

We're hearing it recorded with 1971 technology, and he sounds amazing. I can only imagine what it was like listening to it live at that Jazz club. It must have been absolutely sublime.
News flash! The recordings of the 1960-1970s are often SUPERIOR to more modern recordings. Listen to "The Beatles" album, otherwise known as the "White Album".
Nobody plays it better. When Segovia called him the Prince of the guitar he wasn’t joking 😊
KING of the guitar!
He performed at this insanely high level LIVE. This is absolutely amazing. Truly one of the greatest.
I think it's better than Segovia by a long way.
THE greatest, for sure.
Magic. Unfortunately these days most of the audience wouldn't be LIVE really witnessing, enjoying this wonderful masterpiece, performance.
Instead all for social media points, they would flip out their smartphones and be glued to their little screens and totally miss the magic unfolding in front of them.
As he says tapping angrily into a small screen whilst listening to it
I was there and he was brilliant!
He do.
I mean ....
I does.

You are very lucky!
Lucky bastard, I wasn't even born yet.
I was there, didn't see you there
Ausdruck.
Camera work was also incredible.
I feel this might be the one definitive performance of this piece amongst the many masters. (only one duff note)
Every note rings clear, best performance of this piece, ever!
Oh, mio Dio! Che meraviglia! Superba interpretazione, forse la migliore.
I cant even imagine this piece on the piano.
I've heard about 30 renditions, from Christopher Parkening, Julian Bream, and a plethora of other classical guitarists. This is a gage song in comparing guitarists. JW plays this better than anyone I've heard.
la migliore versione di Asturias che esista . Sbalorditivo veramente!
Excelente interpretación del maestro John Williams.
John Williams tremolo is particularly gorgeous
faz lembrar a perfeição do Duo Abreu, Raphael Rabello, Duo Assad, Alessandro Penezzi, Yamandu Costa, Paco Di Lucia, etc.
The best of the best
Grazie per la Musica
My first great influence and introduction to the classic guitar.
Beautiful
Fantastic and perfect 🎶
Muito bom! John Williams dispensa comentários.
Excellent
Excelente interpretação!
Bravo...🇧🇷
Impeccable
And i'm still struggling with it 20 years after first learning it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyone who doesn't play guitar can hardly comprehend both how difficult this piece is and how much practice it requires, how many hours. No one gets such audible separation of the tremolo notes than JW.
I'd like to think it's easier on the guitar than piano bc my father played it with such ease and would run into my piano room and scream, "No, this is the timing, listen!" Do guitarists realize how far out fingers have to play from one end of the piano to the other with such precision that is unforgiving to the tiniest of mistakes? Still, your comment encourages me. And I play Granada, too, for piano. Other than multiple key changes that you're mentally set up for, it's quite easy in comparison to this piece. Good luck to all the musicians out there. We can't all play like the great ones but we can be great in trying.
@@queenbee8024 Definitely easier on guitar. Playing it badly on guitar is trivial. However, playing it well? Just because the picking pattern is designed for guitar doesn't mean that, the hands of a virtuoso, you don't get something overwhelmingly technically brilliant.

This is my favorite version. Only one that I just heard by XueFei Yang is faster. William's is perhaps, the most fluent guitarist doing this difficult piece.
If you have watched Ana Vidovic's performance, you will find that she plays it fastest and least errors in general among these masters, incredibly 4:40. This is the link that she played Asturias in 1999: ruclips.net/video/ucC8nB-su20/видео.html

Awesome played. I like more the performane of Tavi Jinariu. John Williams is kind of changing the pace a lot in the first part. The second is played amazing.
The most technically gifted classical guitarist.
Not only a gift, but a lot of work.
@@rhylsaldar Mostly work. The gift may be the patience to do all that work more than anything.

I don't think if the played today at the same venue people would be recording. I go to Ronnie's scotts and I don't see people recording anything.

Striking interpretation.
Look up Tavi Jinariu playing this...

I’m interested in the difference between Segovia and this. Segovia says he had to save the classical guitar from flamenco and indeed his version is far softer with less attack on the chords and in places somewhat slower . I much prefer Williams version but in places it does seem to “gallop”
Both are equally virtuosistic and reflect their individual interpretations. I prefer Segovia's more pensive softer approach.
Segovias plays this in the Alhambra better than any player has done
Only a couple of "mistakes"!
nobody plays this as well as john Williams.
Only the great Segovia in his young age time can do it, however, it hardly could be found in RUclips. I had the recorded audio tape, but it's been ruined as time passing by.

Not to take anything away from him but was that a slip at 5:02?
Yes indeed, John is human after all, but still a maestro overall!

Up to this day, I have no idea how can he play that fast and that firm. For me, that's technically impossible. My hand would be throbbing in pain, even if I managed to play like that. I guess he's just a classical guitar god.
I´m not gonna lie
I´m actually scared from seeing this xd
What are you saying? What does that mean?
@kennethbransford820 I think that she meant that guitar's were better made in the past. Better wood used. And larger instruments were made. I agree 👍. I miss past guitars also!
