Jayne was a perfect match of performer and song. She shows guts, determination, unabashed excitement, subdued enthusiasm...a real trooper. You can't help but root for her and love her.
I swear to god 10 years later and I still come back to this video so much. Jayne eats this whole scene. Elaine's version is so sardonic and beat down. Jayne's is so hopeful against all odds. I genuinely think this is one of the pinnacle broadway songs.
Saw this show on Broadway and Jayne Houdyshell's "Broadway baby" stole the show. To me, it was the highlight of the show. A magnificent performance. All these years later this is the number I remember the most from this revival.
Never heard of this woman, but she OWNED this song from the first line!!! Thanks for posting. Could we please swap out some no-talent American Idol buffoon for her? Please. Please.
This production was stunning, and is one of Sondheim's masterpieces. I can't wait til we get another revival of this (as I also loved the 2001 revival too!).
Who is this woman I've never heard of in my entire life in the theater she is amazing what a performance and I've seen many performances of this song and I think she tops the list. I've got to find out more about
I thought Elaine Stritch owned this but Jayne takes this to new heights, she's superb. Almost tragic but still full of hope. Wonderful, all young actors should study this and learn.
Jayne Houdyshell never disappoints. I had the privilege of seeing her three times onstage in three different roles and she's one of the most honest actors with the most range I've ever seen. I can't wait to see more of her work.
Ditto! While it pisses me that Elaine Paige and Bernadette Peters weren't nominated, I'd be very glad if at least one of the Follies ladies grabs a Tony! Jayne deserves a Tony win for this performance! :)
Absolutely glorious. I actually love you for uploading this. Do you have Loveland/Live, Laugh, Love/Buddy's Blues, by any chance? I would actually kill to see them. Well, not literally, but you know
Jayne is a friend of mine. Fantastic performer! Check her ibdb profile out. Last seen in King Lear. She also does a lot of Film/TV. www.ibdb.com/broadway-cast-staff/jayne-houdyshell-406112
I'm just a Broadway Baby, Walking off my tired feet, Pounding Forty Second Street To be in a show. Broadway Baby, Learning how to sing and dance, Waiting for that one big chance To be in a show. Gee, I'd like to be on some marquee, All twinkling lights, A spark to pierce the dark From Batt'ry Park to Washington Heights. Some day maybe, All my dreams will be repaid. I can get to strut my stuff, Working for a nice man Like a Ziegfeld or a Weissman In a big-time Broadway show! Heck, I'd even play the maid To be in a show. Say, Mister producer, Some girls get the breaks. Just give me my cue, sir. I've got what it takes. Say, Mister Producer, I'm talkin' to you, sir. I don't need a lot, Only what I got, Plus a tube of greasepaint and a follow spot! I'm a Broadway Baby, Slaving at the five and ten, Dreaming of the great day When I'll be in a show. Broadway Baby, Making rounds all afternoon, Eating at a greasy spoon To save on my dough. At my tiny flat there's just my cat, A bed and a chair. Still I'll stick it till I'm on a bill all over Times Square. Some day maybe, If I stick it long enough, I can get to strut my stuff, Work-ing for a nice man Like a Ziegfeld or a Weissman In a big-time Broadway show!

the glasses around her neck is such a potent costume touch. it just tells you everything you need to know about her

So glad they added the original version back into this transfer.
Now Tony nominated for this role. Totally deserves it.

This Broadway Baby nailed it!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hit the decks - this girl has really GOT IT!!!.
She is just wonderful. Perfectly cast.
Saw her Sunday in LA. She brought the house down with this number.
Nails it! Well deserved Tony Nomination!

wow. incredible.
The Old Songs are so much better when they are done together, with the big 'Broadway' ending. Rather than being done as three individual numbers.
I also thought I'd never see Jayne again! She was so great in this production. Thanks.
Ditto! While it pisses me that Elaine Paige and Bernadette Peters weren't nominated, I'd be very glad if at least one of the Follies ladies grabs a Tony! Jayne deserves a Tony win for this performance! :)
I agree she nails it and deserved her Tony nomination! I don't think she will win since the character is a bit underdeveloped, but Brava, Jayne!
And with that, Ethel Shutta is now my SECOND favorite Hattie.
Love it. Jayne rocks. Enjoyed it even more than Ethel Shutte's performance.
love this
the lady nails it.
So damn good.
I love this!!!
I think I've watched this vid 30 times...

Thank you! Do you have Who's That Woman, that's my favorite number :)

I love Bernadette peters in this part but I love how the magic is portrayed from the magic that is soundhiem ...this lady is a real
@LovettSweeney
Yeah, I uploaded it. ;)
She was sensational and sadly the show never got that good again.
@bohemianben
Edited. ;)
Superb. But I never liked the ending. I think Soundheim should just let her have the big finale solo. The song deserves it.
no it's perfect :)
