@@tikabass SO after 30 years you can hover over the strings and not touch them, that's awesome. I don't think skin cares if you are using a technique, when one spot is demanded more than others.
@@ranbymonkeys2384 I have do have 1 calouse, on my right thumb. On the spot where I rest it on a pick-up housing. I play at least an hour everyday, sometimes 4. I use nickel wound strings, I have one bass mounted with flatwounds, but it's not the only one I play. That's just the way it is. I lift my fingers of my left hand when changing position to avoid string noise. Right hand engage the string near thge tip of the bone to reduce friction to a minimum, and most of the time, I pluck right above the . I had to double check that, since I don't even pay much attention to that hand anymore.
I've found that you will get calluses whether or not you use moisturiser. Also, moisturising your callused fingers will keep them in better condition and avoid rough edges around the edges of the calluses which can catch and tear.
Man.. I really want an upright bass. Like, a nice big acoustic one. But man are they expensive. Even a cheaper descent one is probably gonna run you about $1000
When I talk about ‘decent’ I mean a non plywood bass. Yes you can get $1000 Basses made of plywood. I’m sorry if I came across rude. In my experience double basses made of other woods they are usually way more. When begging a $1000 - $3000 is good but I prefer to use Basses not made with plywood. I just think they sound better.
Interesting! I was trained in classical bass and I always thought we had it easy in the department. It makes your hand sore maybe, but we don’t develop the calluses you need for finer strings. I remember I tried to pick up guitar and in the beginning my fingers would end up bleeding, even though I had been playing bass for years. Imagine just being sent an upright bass??? Like I’ve played for almost 10 years and I’ve never been able to afford my own, I’ve constantly had to use a school provided instrument. I wish I could live this life...
Dunno if you still practicing the instrument (or keep it), but i have some annotations that can be helpful for you or for people beginners in the instrument too, they're: 1._ In terms of possitioning the instrument the most common way it's the one with the nut aside your eyes horizontal axis, but for some people that won't be the ideal because there's another way that is getting the contrabass in terms of your bowing angle on your down hand (more for classicals but if you only use fingers, using the bow it's a great way to see your digitation/accents flaws). 2._ A lot of people who has instruments with a nut (guitar, bass, etc) are used to lubricate the nut (that thing close to the tunning machines where the strings laid) with some grapite from pencils (the cheapest way) for reducing the actual fricton of the strings with the nut and with that, improving the way it holds in tune and lasts (it's very notorious if the nut are cheap). 3._ Watch out with the hand you use to mark the notes, be sure that you have it in the angle where it's the most relaxed one for stretching your fingers, some people likes to use it forming a triangle but other ones consider the tone out of it it's too sharp and rather have the arm in almost the horizontal axis of the head. 4._ Do some short excercises to warm up the tendons and nerves in your hands (it helps very much with shortening the pain, really xD). 5._ A normal thing to do it's plucking the strings with one finger because of the electric bass habit but you'll only get a lot more stress and pain in your hand, make the pizzicato (pluck) with your index and middle finger, cause with one you'll sound just thin, low punch, volume, etc. So if you use the 2 fingers also use the pinky and ring finger to support the 2 you use to pluck, also try to not use only the finger movement, with the upright bass it's more of a balance between the wrist and finger movement, that will improve very much your tone. 6._ Something from personal experience it's that for me, i want to have my hands not so dry, a little bit, a very tiny, almost imperceptible... wet haha. Then apply some cream (not much, enough on the tips and the sides) before playing and wait it dried, then play with your hands just this little bit of wet because if it is very wet you would get such a sloppy, strange moving hands to play (with gigs and practice across the time you won't have this issue), after the practice put your fingers in some nice warm water (not cold, not hot) and then apply some cream your taste and, oh geez feel some of that stress out of your hand, if you want massage them or something I just had this routine at the beginning because of the practicing every single day. 7._ I've experienced that with electric upright basses, when you play around with a nice compressor pedal before going into the amplification you use, and some very precise and spot on digitation, and most importantly, NO VIBRATO, you can make an upright sound KIND OF an fretted bass but you can't make a fretted sound like an upright (Yes, sad but true, I'm also affected :C ). 8._ Practice with the acoustic sound of the upright ONLY, and hear tons of live performances, because with a lot of the electrical ones, while going cheaper they are suited with less dynamic and like... quality? electric pickups (not all the cases, just saying for general) and maybe you'll think it just sounds harsh, you rolled off the tone knob and still doesn't sound well bla bla bla and get frustrated ot of something that should be nothing, just practice acoustic, if your technique AND sound it's right, then all the rest it's just the electrical ambit problem, don't panic, don't buy another upright, don't waste so much money so quickly, if you don't like it, you can replace it with a better one. 9._ Enjoy it, it's very beautiful and very entertaining, thanks for reading 'til here, have a nice day :)
Nicole Milik How about you use these strings on the Electric Upright Bass:www.thomastik-infeld.com/en/products/orchestral-strings/double-bass/spirocore-tuning-in-5th (4/4 Size Light Tension 5ths Tuning Strings) & what they do is they tune the Bass like a Cello (C, G, D, A) down an Octave which enhances the sound of the Bass. The great thing about 5ths Tuning is you can now play Cello pieces an Octave lower as well as Violin and Viola pieces 2 Octaves lower. With this tuning you can use all 4 fingers, big plus.
I want to start learning upright bass. The part where you said it needs to be at the top of your head though... I'm over 7' tall. Im gonna have to make a custom leg for it, aren't I?

ok so when you play the bass, as a beginner, your fingers are bound to hurt. there’s just no denying that they will hurt. i learned that the hard way as well 😅
Who is that guy? Just looking at how he holds his electric bass, both his hand positions on the bass as well as his "terrible" right-hand technique (single finger picking way up near the neck), who are you to teach bass?
The issue isn't learning to play it, it's not super difficult considering most bass lines you're going to use it for are only 12 bars and bluegrass doubles... the issue is playing it for longer than 5 minutes without getting tired.

Skkrrtt VEVO depends. On an electric, it's just a fretboard with strings, so yeah middle. On an acoustic, the fret board ends in the middle of the instrument, so you play a bit close to where it ends, but also a bit close to the middle.

Als Du zu Deutsch gewechselt hast, fiel ich fast vom Stuhl. Dein Englisch ist perfekt. (oder ist dein English perfekt? 😳)
I didn't l know you could fit 10000 hours in a week!
nellycameron 🤣😂 thank you for that
Well the next challenge is to fall in love with me and spend all my money on fab trips playing music . I'll play Double Bass and treble recorder (best thing ever made ) and you just stay beautiful and play anything and everything everywhere. xx Peace Jonny
WHERE IS THE BOW????????
Cool
Bruh you don’t pizzicato where the finger board ends! You do it in the middle of it!
Skkrrtt VEVO depends. On an electric, it's just a fretboard with strings, so yeah middle. On an acoustic, the fret board ends in the middle of the instrument, so you play a bit close to where it ends, but also a bit close to the middle.
I only play electric bass but I wanna get a fretless bass and maybe an upright bass
Nice work 👍
she did good. i play acoustic bass
Nicely done.
Schade Nicole, das du das nur in Englisch machst, aber ich verstehe, mit Englisch hast du ein weites Publikum. Bin gespannt auf deinen "Bass-Lauf" Und die Hornhaut kommt von ganz salleine! 😍😊😘👍
Naja ich hätte erst mal weiter gucken sollen, du hast ja schon den ersten "Bass-Lauf" gespielt, ein Roch`n`Roll Lauf! Great Nicole weiter so...😮👍
Haha, Danke ☺️
Please re-record Denkmal by Wir Sind Helen.
this was my first upright bass too.
it is piece ov stick. traded it in got a real bass and took a shower to atone.
I play double bass
as a double bass player, i can say that you did,,, pretty okay.? also it’s called double bass. but good job
Both "Upright Bass" and "Double Bass" are correct
He Nicole! Mach weiter so!
