In an effort to be more self sufficient, I have been cutting my own hair. And today is the day to tackle being a barber again. I’ve come here to Big River Estuary State Marine Conservation Area in Mendocino California. This is a beautiful area surrounded not only by the river but also the ocean and redwood trees. After my somewhat successful haircut, we take a walk out the the ocean and check out the sea caves. Then we walk up through the redwoods to get a good look at the beautiful blue-green color of Big River below. Then we drove up to Fort Bragg and get dinner started.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.
Please follow along as I document my journey.

The water looks beautiful! The hair cut came out looking good too, 👌🏼
The scenery is beautiful. Great idea with the tarp. Diy shower is wonderful. When cutting your hair you could sit in a chair under the tarp. By the way you did a great job . You look very nice love you smile and lil laugh.
About a year ago hotels were not as expensive and I gave myself a hair cut and color and even set up my sewing machine and worked on a corset i was making.... Used the hot iron to press a skirt and took a nice fellow out to dinner . That cut and color gave me some confidence 😊

Such a stunning area your in Scott, I really am going to have to visit the US before I expire lol . I really look forward to your videos on a Sunday morning thank you.
Looking good😊
I just paid $25 at Great Clips. I get a 4 clip all around the sides and a 1 and 1/2 inch cut on top. Very similar to ur usual hair cut, so u saved a minimum of $25. I have some clippers, I need to take the leap and cut my own.
Jump! Jump!
I don't know why, but I enjoy Your videos a lot. They give me some kind of strange satisfaction and peace. Somewhere deep in my heart, I feel attraction to be a nomad. Thank you. Your videos are highly appreciated.
The "one minute barber" on RUclips Scott. Good channel.
Amazing what a hot shower can do in making you feel better. Enjoying your videos.
Aloha Scott - What a treat, I really look forward to your videos especially after a long week at the office doing the 9 to 5. Your videos accompanied by your soothing voice helps me to immerse in some much needed “me” time. Thank you for all that you do….
That’s a great compliment. Thank you
I literally watch mostly for the soothing voice/relaxing lifestyle 😁. Helps me chill and calm down.
Couldn’t agree more.
👋
Im new here, loving your Channel. Im impressed with your haircut, i cut my own hair as well. And if its short so what, it will grow back quickly 😊
I love all the walks you taking us on, and how you explain thing's.
And your meal look delicious.
Ok enough for now , thanks for taking us along on your journey Bye-bye 👋
Thanks Carolyn 👍🏼
Me too, I'm a newbie. Very enjoyable watching and listening to his days.
The haircut looks great
They say the difference between a good cut and bad cut is two weeks. Hang in there!
Smiling the whole video, especially your hair cutting part. Very cute. 😊
Those sounds were what we call in Canada.. Cobra Chickens (Canadian Geese)
and as my Dad used to say to me after getting a haircut.. "well, that's what hats are for"
Cheers from Montreal Quebec Canada =)
Viva Le Habitants!
@@StaticCamperVan "bien sur".. Of course! ;)
I started cutting my hair march of 2020 when the pandemic hit. I was paying 12.00 + 5.00 tip. No waiting or driving plus I’ve saved $612.00 over three years. It’s probably more now, I haven’t checked.
You are so calm and down to earth...love to watch...your vids are waaay to short 😉
Your haircut looks good to me and regarding length? It grows, right? Mine is shorter than yours. My son gave me a buzz cut a week or so ago. I love it. Both mine and yours. It does look like a great day, there. My experience with harbor freight has been poor also.
I bought a hand sander that died after the second use. Poor.
Wouldn’t it have been great to live in that area in the pre-modern world. I’m talking bow-n-arrow times. Before computers
Yes! Mendocino is gorgeous! WAIT - WHAT? You like coffee?😅 Me too! ☕
😂
No botch, still handsome imo:) Beautiful area, will definitely visit again.
Enjoying your sense of humour Scott, I'm howling at your Howler monkey crack! Also I googled "Mujer" since you were having trouble with that coffee, and no wonder! Mujer means women in spanish, so you were drinking women's coffee. You'll have to let your hair grow long if you want to have it again. :)
:-) Men always want to cut their hair off when it's already perfect.
Didn't you share this beach, the caves, and the river with us last year? It looks so familiar to me but, I've never been there in person.
Monkeys? Sounded like cranes/herons or a similar large bird to me.
I love my coffee decaf with honey and cream hot in the winter and cold or hot in summer.
28:00 🤣🤣🤣 You’re so funny Scott. I love how u just randomly throw one in there when I’m least expecting it! 🤣🤣🤣
💯🤣 Me too! And if you aren't listening intently, you'd totally miss it lol
I SO miss No. Cal. When i first went up that way, i rented a kayak and fell in love with that area (sea caves/wow) and bought a sea kayak. Only just recently sold it 30(?) years later. LOVE kayaking.
I am so happy you made this Great Video Awsom Champ
Scott some guys just shave it off& shave their head2&3 times a yr! Its all about saving your $, because they don't have the money for it in Future, because of Economy!🤞🙌🙏🇺🇸🌅🌄💫🤩👍✌️🌞So hold on to your Shirt 👕
CGood Day Scott 🌞 Hair cuts these days are the price of a Barbercilp set! Tarps are all the same! But when they get cold ,some are hard to Fold! If you want to save money 🤑 buy Extra large storage, garbage Bags!👍✌️🤞🙌🙏🇺🇸🌅🌄💫🤩🌞
Scott gald to have watched your Adventures going to Forest, oceansides, ect. You & others make my Day a Good Journey!👍✌️🤞🙌🙏🇺🇸🌅🌄💫🌞🤩
Nice job on hair cut. Saving yourself $$ for sure. Thank you for video. Blessings to you.
If I could I would either be at the beach or in a forest. I have a niece that has bee hives. It is the beat honey I’ve ever had. A great cup of coffee is a science sometimes😊
That’s what’s so great about Mendocino, you can have both at once
Remill is an Excellent Food choice!🌞
It looks good. I like the fly by the seat of your pants method. & if I'm being completely honest I liked it before too. The rough and rugged look is admirable on you imo. Thanks for the beauty the peace & the inspiration. You're the real deal. Gourmet coffee barbershop showerhouse & sauna all from a minivan!!!! You tha man!!!
What were you changing when dialing in the coffee? BTW I bought a Staresso coffee grinder (like you reccomended) and love it, its miles ahead of the my other grinder.
Your hair cut turned out nice. I enjoyed watching all the scenery- God is an amazing artist... Thanks for taking us along on your van life journey.
Thanks for watching Selah
Aww man, you cut your hair! I was digging the Saturday Night Fever vibes, also Frankie Valle is touring CA now, you could have rocked it at his concert! 😂❤
🤣
Nice thing about hair is it grows back, at least for most people. Love that beach too, maybe you should rename your channel "Mendo Man"😊
Love your usual procrastination when it comes to your hair cutting routine, thought you’d make another coffee to lube the process and take more time!! Hair looks great ❤
I used a one gallon water jug for my showers when I camp.l fill half with cold water and then some hot..testing the temperature while filling it.l could tie it above me and tip out the water.l use the jugs with the handle
You look younger, very nice...good job! I love your videos, they inspire me. Have a good time!🌅
Water is so Blue, Beautiful ❤️,these Caves are a Good place to Cool off if its really Hot 🥵
Your hair looks fine to me. I am not picky like many of the women I know. My late husband was the one who cared about his looks where this country girl could care less.
I think you did a fine job I think your hair looks nice. I have been cutting my own hair for years and I cut my dog's hair too. I do occasionally mess us both up but we love each other anyway. I was never happy with the way people cut my hair and I just thought I can screw up my own hair myself for free
Beach and river are so gorgeous, what a lovely place. Your hair looks fine.
My own self inflicted hair cuts sometimes turn out great....sometimes not but luckily im not a perfectionist ..... Thanks for the words....Mary
Cold water “dips” have many health benefits.
What a good thing to be able to do for yourself. it turned out fine and you did not have to sit thru a haircut with an unknown person. Funny i had just viewed your vid when u had the elevation issue. So great to see you enjoying life. 🎉
You should just stay for a month…if you love it so much just stay and enjoy it till you want to move on😊
Coffee, vans, Mendocino and Sonoma county are my favorite things. Thank you for your videos. ❤
Thanks for watching Darla
Hi Scott. Mendicino looks like a great area for making ASMR videos btw. Peace!
Your happiest living a simple life. Your a regional expert in van life culture . You have been able to transfer what you learned by your honest authentic videos. I hope you recognize that your contribution to van lifers, goal setters, dreamers and adventure seekers is unique and inspiring . Thank you.
Thanks Jeanie
If I were a guy I think I'd just drive a #3 clipper all over my whole head & be done with it. 😉 Anyway... you did a fine job. #3 is a good summer cut length.
Uuh, Scott U should treat yourself more often...
I finally figured out it was time to give up on my receding hairline and now shave it all off. Takes 5 minutes. Must be nice to have a thick head of hair like you do. You did a good job.
coffee, coffee, coffee, lol love it
You right might as well keep going 😊😊❤❤
The sounds you were hearing on the walk sound like the geese here in Roseburg, OR.
I use a sheet clipped to the open rear doors of my (full sized) Promaster. It gets wet when I use the Nemo solar shower on a windy day but it dries quickly and folds small when not in use. Your tarp creates a whole new room! The stuff we use to live in a van..!
Great video Scott. All of your haircuts have looked excellent. It's been a windy spring where I live too. 20's for wind recently today sunny sky 15mph wind and 64°.
The caves are gorgeous!! And great job on the haircut!
A hair clipper at Costco was a very good investment. I do #3 top, #2 sides, small mirror for the back (hardest part) and good to go! You can save $150/year, quit the silly coffee habit altogether. It won't be fun at first, but what do you "need" it for ? I personally do Matcha in the morning these days. Visit me in Redwood City when you come through town. Love the area just outside Lone Pine, but sadly have not been in quite a while. Stay safe!
Coffee is my hobby. I won’t ever give it up
You did a great job. Looks handsome ❤
👍🤩💝Awesome. Thanks for touring us around. I look forward to visiting there. It seems like my kind of place. I love Sedona, Az like how you love that place. However in recent years it’s over run with tourist and people not taking care of the sacred area.😭 Take care.💝
The easily accessible free camping around Sedona really brings in the crowds. Mendocino is a little more difficult to get to which keeps some people away. But it can get a little crowded in the summer
@@StaticCamperVan - 👍Oh that’s true about Sedona. I see the difference and understand what mean about Mendocino. Each location has a pro and a con about its location.😞
There are some good mens self hair cut with clippers videos on yt. But you did an admirable job.
Nice to see someone using heavy whipping cream in the coffee. I do the same. No carbs. Also, your haircut looks great!
I’ll be so nervous going near a cave! Me? I don’t think so! You’re brave.
I agree about the quality of the gyms. Sometimes they look dingy.
The trees and waters are mesmerizing.✨
Hi, you can consider gifting the shower room to a goodwill and while you're there, look for a device called a flowbee. The flowbee is the most foolproof way of cutting your own hair on a budget. The only downside in a vanlife application is the vacuum requirement, but if you have a vacuum, it would be a golden solution.
When howler moneys can fly.........to Canada!
I haven’t owned a vacuum in over nine years
Return the tarp to HF, they should exchange if you have the receipt. Although the method which you are utilizing, it seems like you don't really require that specific grommet.
You don't have a bag style solar shower? I find that style very compact and useful.
Alternative, buy a 1 gallon collapsible water jug.
Put it on the roof above your shower area, set in sun for a while
Short length of tube attached to the spout, cap with small holes, and you are set!
Seek out a barber/beautician school for reasonable hair cut/styling.
I’m not a fan of the bag showers. They are hard to get fully dried out between uses and tend to grow mold.
If I recall correctly, you used to have a tankless water heater, correct? I believe it broke down on you but did you like it? I have one in my list but I can't decide how important water pressure will be for me. I rarely take showers, I like baths. My work causes me to hurt and become stiff so I started taking baths. So, I will miss that but they have portable tubs that I'll probably consider when the time comes. Anyway, the way you get clean is perfectly fine and acceptable. You always look well groomed so it's obvious you take care of yourself.
Yes, I liked the instant hot water heater. But it was really unreliable. Had it not broken down, I’d still have it. I used it more for heating water to wash laundry than to shower.
Chrome from @Vancity Vanlife has an tankless water heater that seems to be much better made.
I'm impressed the flavor with your of Groundworks yellow label blend coffee. I'm an old Kona coffee farmer and have been drinking our own Kona coffee for many decades. Decided to try your suggestion and I found it very smooth tasting.
So cool. Nice to hear from a professional. At some point, I need to try Kona again.
Gorgeous beach and the water color is so pretty.
A travel blog and coffee chat all in one, nice job. Normally I don't care much for blog.'s this long but this one kept my attention throughout.
With the prices of haircuts these days, it's worth it cutting your own hair. Most electric shavers now include the side (over ears) attachments which help a lot. ✌
Coffee, coffee, coffee. Love it, I am with you my friend. Sounds like your location is giving your coffee stiff competition for the love of your life. 😁
☕☕☕
Just wanted to say Hi. Loving all your videos, thank you ❤😊
Thanks Lena
You did a great job on your hair 👍 I'm a long way from California but I have too agree-it's beautiful & the water looks very inviting. Thank you for sharing 🙏✌🌎💞
thanks Scott for the tip on Dr. Bonner's hand lotion.. you're right, it's GOOD FOR HAIR TOO. My hair feels instantly rejuvenated and I am sure it will grow strong and healthy with this all natural application.. ps I think your hair always looks wonderful by the way.
You’re welcome. Good to hear it’s working for you too
Looks like a pretty good haircut to me. Did you find the beard trimmer was useful?
Somewhat. Being battery powered, it struggled a bit. But definitely easier to trim around my ears
Nice coffee experience…. I look forward to your videos
Nice hair cut, you look so much younger! Love the videos, im a city nomad right now but after some last minute business deals are concluded im heading out on the open rosd. Very insightful videos
I’m a city van dweller most of the time, there are some benefits to being city bound. Best wishes on getting out on the road
Nice to see Big River Park again! If I recall correctly, you were here and did another fine video quite some time ago. Always good to return to a place we were at, in the past.
Big River is such a great little spot. It never feels too crowded either
Well, now I need to come and stay in Mendocino! That river is incredible! I love my Humboldt coast, especially around the Trinidad/Westhaven area, but I can broaden my horizons😊
Wow 😯 what a beautiful place
If you want your tarp to be taller you could sit on a stool (or something similar).
True
Those sound like geese
“Lower” them ears! LoL 😂 Thanks for sharing! Love that clipper it’s great!
I enjoy your videos. I like how you enjoy the beauty of nature around you and a good cup of coffee! Fun to watch you make great meals on a one burner stove lol! A shower with an iced tea bottle! The simplicity of your life is just really wonderful! Thank you! BTW the hair looks great too! Good job!
Thanks Colleen
That is a special place
I've been eyeing the clippers for a month now...almost at the point of just doing a buzz cut. Not been a fan of spending so much when having it done. So...wish me luck I guess. Haha thanks for the inspiration Scott. 👍
You can do it!
Just keep a hat handy
That is a really beautiful place
You are so calm and gentle and seem like a really great guy.
It will grow out
What a great day in the park video, and that water was so clear, beautiful area. Was going to ask you your thoughts on Starbucks whole bean French roast @ Costco? I've been really enjoying it, $15 to $20 for 2.5lbs very reasonable. Great video 👍
Hey Thanks. I don’t enjoy dark roast coffee at all. Light roast is all I drink.
Always go back to front with the clippers
I do after I take down the bulk
Ahh, man, I was hoping to see how you put your tarp on and what you used all around.
You have really nice hair, and you've done a great haircut 💇♂️ .. feel very great to get those loose hairs off skin (porque pica) it itches 😆 love your shower idea, cool.
Love the beautiful caverns and definitivamente Oceanside (I just, it amazes me of the beauty and don't get tired, I sound like a broken record abd apologize for that)😁
The other side of the tarp was held on exactly the same as the side I showed. Magnetic hooks and clips.
@@StaticCamperVan oohhh okay gracias for explaining 👍🏻
I really look forward to your post enjoy your day man and be safe.
Thanks Todd
Hey Scott, one more thing...about showers. In my highboy Leer campershell, I sit on my 3 wedge foam thingies made into a chair, put a contractor's black plastic bag over me, and under me. I shower with a small garden sprayer of warm water, and the water empties into a collapsible basin. Easy peasy. I stay warm, got privacy and use minimal water. Towel dry and dress. It's amazing what one can do in a tiny space!
Great haircut Scott! Looks like a professional did it
I had to go back and fix it a few days later. It was a little choppy. Haha
@@StaticCamperVanI cut my own hair and find I never get it all the first time
I have what is possibly an unusual request. I’m seriously considering building a small camper van the same as yours.
If it is at all possible I would much appreciated you showing an overhead diagram of the layout of your van. I think most of your subscribers
Would also appreciate the viewing of this diagram.
Looking forward to a favourable response.
Regards
Leith
I’m not sure how I would be able to offer an overhead diagram of my van. If it helps, I have a Van Build Playlist that would have all the info you’re looking for. ruclips.net/p/PL9PWzpL1cZIEK5IOyMP6XlZN_abmkRega
One note though, if I were to rebuild my van now, virtually nothing would stay the same. I would keep the galley setup, but the placement and dimensions would all be different.
@@StaticCamperVan thank you for that .I will go through them all .
I hope all is well with you, and travel safe.
Leith
Good haircut 👍🏻
