I know this is an uncommon thing in the US, but Nixon is the kind of person who in an African country would have been a President for 20 years. After a long time in power, one might have grown tired and weary of the same leader but 1 or 2 years after he is gone, there would be so much to remark about the things he pushed forward during his time in leadership and how life has become drastically different as a result.
As a Zimbabwean, one has not shied away from occasionally ranting about how bad our former President was, but, even in the lack of exciting and glitzy projects shaking the nation, he does have one great legacy and the kind you will see repeat itself in many African countries - the education system was an equaliser that allowed the determined student living deep in the rural areas to go out and shine at a global stage and change their whole community. All the people from here we see in South Africa and the UK where a lot of us are based only got there because of his educational system.
I see Nixon as that kind of a person, except with a lot more to celebrate than our leaders here in Africa. He probably is as iconic as Margaret Thatcher, but a much more critical version who still sought to bring the power to the people and not to big non-governmental & anti-people organisations like we have today.

I can't say that I am a big fan of former President Bill Clinton, but he was the first president (after RMN's resignation from office in 1974) who sought out Nixon's advice and was not afraid to publicly say so. Reagan and George H.W. Bush held Mr. Nixon at arm's length, though they very often consulted with him behind the scenes. (Richard Nixon said so himself). Thanks Mr. Clinton, for your good and kind words at RMN's funeral in 1994. You restored some measure of dignity to one of your predecessors.

Nixon was a blight upon America. He made a very big blunder when he took us off the gold standard to pay for a war we never should have been in. He was complicit in the Watergate scandal and the person who made overtures to China (our enemy) to industrialize them and bring them into the modern world, even if they were not ready. His gold standard blunder precipitated the financial mess we are in today.

Mmmmmmmmmm… 😬 You’re definitely right, Vivek, about him being profoundly misunderstood and the most under-appreciated president in history. BUT to call him an America First conservative is a huge stretch. He may have made abortive attempts to reign in the federal bureaucracy during his very short second term (for which the deep state ultimately chucked him from office), but during his first term he took us off the gold standard, he became the first president to impose wage and price controls during peacetime, he never made any attempt to lower taxes, he expanded federal regulations by 121% (LBJ had only expanded them by 19% during his presidency), he appointed a left winger to the Supreme Court who ultimately wrote the majority opinion in Roe v. Wade (Harry Blackmun), and spending on social issues exceeded defense spending for the first time in history during his time in office. Not to mention, Détente was a bust - the Soviet Union did not want to “get along” like Nixon sought; they only understood the language of “either we win and you lose, or the other way around”, as Reagan understood. Frankly, if liberals were honest enough to judge presidents strictly on policy, Richard Nixon would be their favorite Republican president of the twentieth century. From a certain point of view, Nixon was more of a liberal.
