Build REALISTIC Railroads with NETWORK MULTITOOL in Cities Skylines

- The NETWORK MULTITOOL makes it SO MUCH EASIER to build a long rail line from the center of town to the edge of the map with perfect curves and grades! See how in this episode of Reddington.
This city starts out fresh on the Green Plains map, which comes with the base version of Cities: Skylines. Rather than being a planned and platted city, Reddington begins with just a town square and branches out on this verdant peninsula from there!

tip: use node controller to smoothen the junction for the station, also moves the catenary(?) (dunno if I spelled that right) further out
@@marianandnorbert lol I didn’t even realize that NC worked on rails 🤪 thanks for the tip!!! I’ll definitely give that a try 😃
Hi, Im from discord :)
Such a treat to watch over my lunch break. Great work with the network multitool - I didn't know it was possible to use it that way!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Phil! I have to say...I think this mod is indispensable now!
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto I knew it had power, but I didn't know it had *that* much power (it's definitely gotten much more since its inception though); almost no point to building roads the old way now :p
Yo! I freaking love this community. Absolutely love that Phil is here watching your videos on his lunch break. Too Funny.
One of the few CS youtubers who know how to make a realistic railroad. Much respect
Lee: Omg! .6% grade! It's so steep! 😱
Cities: Skylines, with 25% grade: This is Fine
So hype just from the thumbnail I didn't notice it's not for another thirteen hours.
Lol same. I can't wait. It's hard to plan out, but I love historical focus builds where the city develops organically. Especially if they're roleplaying as if they're a planner from that era. It makes cities feel like they're real places because they have real histories. I love this series, lol.
I came here from his server, thought it was already posted as well..
Loved this! I work in a train company (not driving a train though), and one of the things that annoys me most is all the steep curves and slopes people make for the trains. Great way to use the plugin. I wasn't aware that you could make extra points like you did. Super useful!
Glad you enjoyed it! I gotta say...it really is soooo easy if you just take note of the terrain lines a bit...it's super easy to move things around after that! I LOVE this mod!
I knew you could make more, but I didn't know you could make so many or span such a long distance (runaround 🤪)
I did not realize you could add more curves to the make connection tool! Actually learned quite a bit from this on the multitool and loved the ease you showed with moving the curves of the railroad around.
Yeah. Masterful and so informative
I don't use mods myself but watch others that do. I found this tool interesting when it first hit the scene but never saw someone use it quite as Lee did in this video. Top-notch, in my opinion.
The smoothness of the railroads was so satisfying :)
Thank you, cheers Lee!
Every time I think that I've seen everything Network Multitool can do, I see a video like this and it blows my mind. You've done a great job at illustrating its power. Thanks Lee!
Wow. Just Wow. I had no idea you could do that type of complexity with Network Multitool!
REDDINGTON IS BACK!!!
I didn't know you could double click to add more curves. Man does that make realistic train lines easy! Great work.
City planner is super but you are super dupa awesome. The best videos and very creative always
Reddington needs to host the locomotive olympics. After all, the mayor has been training really hard!
The viaduct on over town looks sooo cool!
Your building is absolutely incredible. I’d love to see more
I’ve got more coming! 2021 was a brutal year and I got burned out. I’m starting to feel better though {I think} so hopefully you’ll see a lot more from me in the coming weeks 😊
Now THAT is a good freaking railroad
Brilliant use of the multitool! Love your style and skill!
I had no idea it was possible to click and drag the curves! This is a game changer!!
IKR!!! 🤯
Wow. I know lots of people wouldn't think so but that really is beautiful. When done right it just looks so realistic.
Your precision and skill are both intimidating and refreshing
Great video
Thanks, Lee
Don’t be too intimated...it really is an easy tool to work with...I’ll do more with it to build the rest of the line, and hopefully I’ll have lots of other suggestions to ease the learning curve when I do it.
You're such a treat to watch. Such thought through planning. Loving it!
Wow! That was some impressive use of the network tools. I had no idea you could use the make connection tool work like that. I love this Reddington series, so thank you for another episode Lee. Merry Christmas to you, your family and to everyone on the channel.
Thanks! I'm so glad you found it useful! You have a great week too!
Wild Thing, you make my heart sing!
If only the Multitool existed on console... Dreamland! And now back to our regularly scheduled grading...
Great piece Lee, perfect for a morning coffee before the start of work. Pleasure as always.
Man, ten seconds into that intro and my mind wandered immediately to the Six Million Dollar man, but with rail. "Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the technology. Better than it was before. Better...stronger...faster!"
Yet again, dropping some major knowledge. A great educational tip to this mod and doing railroads correctly. Can't wait to finish this video right when I get off work!
What an upload so far! Always good to see a Lee Hawkins upload!
Great work brother.
I'd love to hop a ride on one of those trains and enjoy the sights and sounds of Reddington :)
Hi Lee, I am from Hamburg Germany so please excuse perhaps my imperfect English. I have been looking at alot of your videos and I would like to give you some feedback. Since I lack the resources to donate anything, perhaps this is fine. Along with City Builder, Biffa, Overcharged Egg, Imperial Jedi and Yumbl - you are one of the most valuable contributors both to the game and the community. Your historic view of how in the US blocks have developed along with the way you use the NETWORK MULTITOOL is nothing less than amazing. I have only now begun to use it in the way you do and it is really useful. The episode on "Let the terrain by your Guide" has changed the way I play as well. In many ways the above mentioned including you have made incredible contributions. I would really like to thank you. Stay safe-take care and let us wish for peace in our times.
Great video!! I'm always anxiously waiting for another one. Hope you'll release new ones faster in the future, can't wait!!
Lee's Back!!!!!!!!!!
Really impressed by what you can achieve with Network multi tool !!! Excellent work, please publish video more often, they are always a excellent moment to look.
Another exceptional video! Lee your content is top notch, so nice to have you back. 😊
Impressive work on those rail lines. My only critique of this video is that it did not start with "Hi! I'm Lee!" I always look forward to your intro.
I’ll try and do better 😂
Neat! Very smooth curves and inclines.
First of all great video, I loved it.
I got 2 points where you could improve the realism a bit more.
In reality you would probably not lower terrain just under a bridge, as the rain water would build insurmountable puddles there. As they are 3m deep. I would love to see either the road being lowered on a wider range so that the water can flow out or a higher bridge.
Where you dig into the hills or build up terrain for the railway it would look really awesome to place a stone wall that supports the terrain.
There is a mod that lets you place quay walls on land, with that the rail line would improve even more ❤️
Well...interesting points. First, I want to say that IRL these probably would have ended up low-clearance bridges...which may be realistic, but probably would not look good in CS :-/ But you're definitely right about the water. If it was an urban area, they'd probably have lowered the road if needed and used a storm sewer which would be rather deep anyway.
As for the retaining walls...YES, I would love to add those, but not with the game's quays. Those are so big they just don't look realistic to me. They do make it look neater, but retaining walls should be smaller. Also, it wasn't too crazy to just cut through and have a steep wall of rock or earth or even ballast on old rail lines. Again, retaining walls would definitely be used in populated areas where land is expensive, but in a rural area I think they'd have just smoothed things enough to keep falling rocks off the tracks and then been done.
Valid feedback on both counts though, thank you!
You are totally right about the Strom sewer, totally forgot about them. Sorry.
I think it is Imperatur who does shrink the size of the quay walls to make them tighter/ look better. There is some mod for that in the workshop. Forgot the name.
But it would definitely add some variation 😉
But as I said, I do love your builds as they are more focused on realism.❤️
The same goes for bridges some variation adds so much to the builds.
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto I was going to add a suggestion to install stone abutments too, for all the overcrossings but you're right. Without ploppable assets for stone walls or the proprietary mod those quays would look absolutely ridiculous! Plus you have to build them next to water iirc. That makes extra work cause then you have to pump the water out and backfill with dirt.
You're also right about low clearance bridges not looking right on Cities Skylines because the overheight vehicles will just dive through and not smash into them like on the 11 Foot 8 Bridge website and RUclips channel.
Can't you make the quay walls thinner with node controller? It might cause problems by exposing the rock faces of the terrain below it, but node controller is able to edit the width of segments too.
I REALLY liked this one and would love to see more like this!~
after seeing city planner plays post this video on his community tab I immediately clicked and after seeing the first few minutes of this episode, I watched the whole series from beginning to the end. Well deserved subscription!!
Sorry for my poor English, its not my native language...
Glad you found me and enjoyed, and your English was great!
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto Glad to hear that. I think I am gonna watch some older videos from you.
Well done Lee, always Ace's!! Such great content.
Glad you enjoyed it!
After watching a series of your videos my cities no longer look like cluster F...
Much appreciated 🙏
Glad to help 😊
I'm mad that RUclips didn't notify me of your video!
In any case glad you're back, Lee! Looking forward to more videos
I’m frustrated about that too! Did you see the last episode, where I added the river port? The algo did NOT put the word out about that one... 🥺
What a satisfying train ride!
amazing use of NM
This is good i always struggle to make good realistic rails
Wot a great vid, I need to try out that tool for my train and metro lines
It’s awesome for routing long stretches!
38:38 it’s funny because the area I live is exactly like that. The city is split into new and old parts in the foothills and the main roads that connect the two range from 8-12% grades.
Christmas came early!
Great video as always
such a cool series!
More to come! I’m working on it right now…starting to get back into the groove 👍🏻
high quality content
You didn't have to delete and redraw the roads to get the rail crossings. You could have just used the merge function of Network Multitool. Although it doesn't work if the intended junction is too close to an existing node. But it's very handy for when you lay out a long stretch of road with collision turned off. You can just go back through and connect everything with a click.
It never occurred to me to use the connection tool to get the rail lines to follow the terrain lines. That will fundamentally change how I create lines going forward. Thank you.
so smooth
😎 thx
Nice
Lee Hawkins: THE Network Multitool GOD!
Hey LEE!!, Long time no SEE!!
I’m here! How u doin?
Nice education on how to use the sloping and grading tool! 🙌🏻😀Thanks! Can you switch to other background music though? It’s to intens for me! 😅
Lol I could switch to heavy metal...or polka...
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto Than I would prefer Polka! 😜
Reminds me of Civil 3D!
Regarding the discussion about third electrification rail, here is an impressive exemple in the Pyrénées : ruclips.net/video/MCkZDAVZ2Ac/видео.html
The video talks about the route, the history and the futur of the "ligne de Cerdagne".
Wish my French was...OK...but interesting stuff! Thanks!
Hi one thing I noticed was that you used roads to change where the nodes were (around the railroads crossed over a road). Instead of doing that you can add and remove nodes using the same tool. Not sure if you knew and you just prefer that method but thought I would let you know.
More soon please
I just stumbled upon this channel, what happened to the more money less traffic series city? The series was extremely useful and interesting!
That series is not gone nor forgotten 😃 I have more episodes in the works as we speak... 😉
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto awesome thank you!!
Love your videos! Out of curiosity will you ever be getting around to Part 7 of the Mor Money Less Traffic series? Your last upload was April 2021. I’m interested in seeing the highway entrance/exit reworking as I am following along with my own build on console. Thanks!
I hope to have it done soon. I have a lot of plans for that series, but this has been a very brutal year for me. I’m hoping things are turning around a bit and I can get back on things.
#RespectRailroadsGradesandCurves 👍💯
When are you thinking about getting the next one out ?
It’s out! 😃
My tracks wont connect to the edge of the map. It doesn't show the blue arrow and I can't figure out why. No trains are coming or leaving. Do you know how to resolve this?
You are probably missing a mod, or an updated version of one. There’s a collection of all the mods I use for Reddington in the description. Also, if you really get stuck, swing down into our Discord…there are lots of people (besides just me) who would be happy to help you troubleshoot 👍🏻
I am actually having same issue, I have Unlimited Outside Connections installed and activated which I believe is what you need to get this to work; however, I have been unable to get it to work properly. What I am noticing is when I draw in the track piece at the edge of the track it is not auto-generating the "crossover" node that allows trains move from one side of the tracks to the other. I believe this node is needed at the edge of the map regardless. Either way cannot get it to work, will probably pop in Discord to investigate.
Update: You DO need to have the Default (non-modded) setting turned on in Network Anarchy for it to work properly. I can confirm that that does generate the "crossover" node and I can see the blue outside connection arrows now; however, still even after many many days in game at 3 speed, no trains spawn....will still play around with it.
@@cwburns32 I resolved the issue by reloading the save, and then reconnecting the piece of track to the outside of the map.
hey lee!
Hi Emily!
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto yo what up
You used the Northern pronunciation for Appalachia. In the South, it's pronounced "app-a-LAT-cha". You're welcome! 🙂
Sorry... 😁but I am from Cleveland...so super North lol
I suppose if you wanted to get SUPER technical the Northern pronunciation would be "al-a-GAIN-ee", since they (at least used to) call them the Allegheny Mountains in Pennsylvania. Cleveland actually sits on the very edge of the Allegheny Plateau, where the Appalachian foothills begin.
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto yes, you definitely are super North!
I was born in Baltimore Maryland and grew up in Boston. And they pronounced Allegheny in MD the same as you guys in Cleveland. They even simplified the spelling to Allegany. Baltimore was at the other limit of the Allegheny/Allegany Plateau. 🙂
Its about time, unfortunately not 5b1c☹️
where are you ??? lol
I’ve got new episodes coming in a few weeks! Hang tight! 😁
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto mhm ok lol
That's a lot of work for a train that really is worthless and will lose insane money no matter how much it gets used.
I completely disagree…this railroad is a huge asset at this point because all of our outside roads connections at this point are very very slow gravel roads. This rail connection drastically speeds up imports and exports that are desperately needed for the city to grow much larger. So while maybe the infrastructure will put a sizable dent in the city budget, it will be more that made up for by higher industrial tax revenues, which from what I’ve observed depend a great deal on industrial profitability. Without this rail connection and without highways, this city will really struggle.
I appreciate you bringing this up though…I’m not sure I hammered on this point enough when I built this. Thank you!
spends an hour perfecting grades and throws in an 8% road at the end lolol
8% grades are fine for roads, but they’re never found on heavy rail lines because traction trains were never good on grades > 2%, especially back in the 19th Century when much rail was originally built. Cars and trucks can usually deal pretty well with at least an 8% grade, and in some cases I’ve seen some US Highways with >12% grades on them 😨 and they are crazy to drive!
Tough to listen to when you’re constantly smacking your lips every 15 seconds
Hard to record/edit all of my videos 100% perfectly as a one man show...sorry 🤷🏻♂️
