If Schoolboy Q didn't turn down the Goosebumps beat that was offered to him, that would have been the other hit single along with That Part. That would have been possibly his best hit single to date and just turned this album into overkill lol. But still a very near 10/10 album for me.

I worked concessions at a music venue when I was in my late teens when Schoolboy Q came to perform. I was so happy and sad simultaneously because while I was there, I mostly had to hand chicken tender baskets and burgers to fans. However while on break, I was able to begin walking past the barrier from the concessions area to the open floor where it was packed with people. I didn’t want to lose my job so I didn’t go into the audience fully and was just lingering all the way in the back hall. Then Schoolboy says “Alright this next song we’re going to go crazy! Even that guy wearing green all the way back there we’re going to get hype!!” then played Ride Out. My uniform is green. Crowd goes ballistic then I stand there in awe then eventually go back and bake pretzels 🥨 thinking about what just happened. Something I’ll never forget
This is the best Q album musically. Holy shit I love this record. Oxymoron is really good though. This is just a sinister, villainous stick up rap record. That is so bluesy, jazzy,funky, house, even. (Blank Face). Anderson Paak, E40, Jadakiss, Kanye the uncredited Kendrick. The cover is a photo of a cornea close up. The album cover represents getting shot in the face. Veins in the eye can look like trees, and the clouds of a smoky evil world. With the guy who just shot you Q as your guide. It's visceral.
In Groovy Tony Jadakiss makes a reference to the movie “Juice” staring 2pac when he says “when I hug your mom and look over her shoulder you notice I got the (blankface) “. In the movie 2pac’s character Bishop kills one of his friends and attends the repass with the family like Jadakiss mentions in the previous bar. The main character in the movie Quincy knows Pac’s character Bishop killed their friend and knows he’s acting like he doesn’t know who did it. When Pac hugs the victims mother Quincy notices that Bishop(2pac) is staring at him with a blank cold stare on his face(hence the term blankface) while he is hugging the victims mother. It’s one of the best scenes in the movie. 👍
This is incredible watching someone else have the same reactions to when I listened to this back in the day. Such a heavy sound and message throughout the album. It gave me goosebumps listening then and it still does now

After this album Schoolboy Q became frustrated with the expectations to live up to the more consistently experimental and substantive aspects of the project; which existed prior but not as relentlessly as Blank Face's initial stretch- then the concept becomes more disjointed and we get tracks that feel divorced. And i'm sympathetic as Q is a great regardless and Oxymoron is my overall most played project of his; but goddamn he had something here and I wish we got more of it 😭

SGC's *_Reasonable Drought_* is also a more recent GOATed rap album (though there are many if we look well enough).

Hard not to love Groovy Q. I think this album was more of his influence than Oxymoron which some would say is more of a industry/ radio album
Dang, nice to see some SchoolBoy. But I actually think Oxymoron would’ve been a better place to start. Hopefully Bob goes back and listens to it either on the channel or on his own sometime.
Thank you! Finally someone reacts to this underrated gem! this album didn't that great compare to "Oxymoron" and "CrasH Talk", so there's not a lot of reaction on the album or songs. He also made a three parts mini movie for this album. More like 3 music videos that tells a story, part one: "by any means", part two: ""Tookie knows II" and part 3: "Black tHougHts". The third one wraps well the concept of "blank face"
