  • Hello, I thought in the absence of an outdoor ham radio and cooking video (weather in UK has been horrid) I wanted to give you an update on plans for the next few months.
PLEASE NOTE: I mention trying some ham radio from the Bluedot festival but there was torrential rain for the weekend so I had to abandon the idea.
If you have some ham radio related ideas you want me to try out please add a comment.
I'm a licensed amateur radio operator from the United Kingdom. My RUclips channel features videos focusing on operating portable radio from various locations plus how to videos, tutorials, insights and conversations in the hobby.

Thank you for the video. The Bluedot weekend was out of bounds for me as my daughter got married on Saturday, guests arrived on Friday and we had a family Sunday dinner. Very enjoyable.I was hoping to catch you on the air I but was too busy with everything. Let us know how you got on.

Hi Carl: I like your ideas for the next few months of operating, sounds like it is going tobe a great learning experience for all who tune in, I also like your new flag pole antenna mast it looks the one I have for my portable activations, it really comes in handy when there are no natural supports available. Also can't wait to see you try EME something that I would like to try myself. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, never a dull moment in our hobby, always something new to try and experiment with!

    Hi Carl.
You have that beautiful mountain there to work with. Gather up your 2 meter and 70cm. Yagis and try and see how many repeaters you can hit... Different number of elements, longer boom length, some home brew stuff, varying power levels. Just plain old experimenting with VHF/UHF into repeaters in the area. And seeing how many you can hit with a copy able signal... You and even do 4 and 6 meters if you want... ( Wish we had 4 meters here in the USA)
Did something very similar with 900 and 1200 MHz. back in the days when the bands were more popular.
Also looks a great spot for your Satellite equipment!

Just to say - I very much enjoy your vids and your humility!! Satellite and EME are both of interest to me, so they get a thumbs up. Re. Building a discussion/community, much as I hate it, I think discord is where it's at? Have a great break, not heard of blue dot before and am going to have a google, science and music sounds like a great combo.

Hello Carl I have been both educated & inspired whilst enjoying your channel ever since I made a commitment to take radio seriously so to speak and progress through the licences. I currently hold UK intermediate and I'm looking to progress study to full during this coming winter. Please may I ask how you personally chose to study in your progression from intermediate to full license?. Any comments or advice from your experience would be welcome. I'm sure that I can't be the only person at this stage of the amateur radio journey to benefit from some advice. Thank you for your continued content and taking the time to inspire and educate your fellow hams. 73's D.E 2e0WIK. Looking forward to a QSO some time. You would make my QTH in Cheshire from MowCop on 2m no problems.

I follow all your videos with pleasure, I would like to see a summary of the evolution of the stations (mobile, land rover camper/van... cabin) what you would like to keep and what to change in your setup, what disappointed you and what you would buy again... The radio has so many possibilities that we often get "lost" in the various possibilities (hf, contest, satellite, sota, digital...)! I hope it solves the power supply problems of the 706 it is always an honest radio for hf (in 144 no, better a baofeng fm) 73 de iz3qvb

Hi Carl, It's nice to see someone else trying different aspects of ham radio. I too want to try EME but never thought to use 70cm though I may need to build a yagi with more gain than I have currently. One thing that I like to do is work portable. I look for elevated mounds and mountains and work VHF and above, or sometimes try to activate a POTA park with HF. Even getting skunked {zero contacts) is more fun than sitting around watching television. I have 2 camping trips planned for August and September and will be taking at least one radio with me on each trip. Usually for antennas I take a DX Cpmmander with 40/15m and a 20m element, or I use a 40ft endfed into a 9:1 UNUN and set that as a sloper. It's all fun.

  • @robertmitchum2972

WSJT is probably the best way to go for EME with minimal equipment. A cross or circular polarized yagi may be a thought due to the Faraday rotation your going to get. A good low noise pre amp would help out greatly as well. It’s a long way to the Moon and back.
Love to see you try this out. What a wonderful learning experience that would be. And how helpful it would be as well for any of us trying to do UHF EME Via portable station.

Carl, always some thoughts on what to do with the hobby next. As the bands are a bit like the weather, I am trying DMR and FT8 a little more. Whilst also looking at SOTA to add to the POTA and WWff. However, I prefer the caravan vice the tent, a little more homely and a tad warmer in our english summer!!

Looking at the stuff on your desk, have you thought of building electronics circuits? Lol, I know you have enough going on. Where did you get the flagpole? I enjoy what you've doing operating on the radios. Do you still have your military radios? 73s

Hi yes still got military radios, I got the flag pole and large spike from Newquay camping, I’ve tried many things, the issue I have is limited worktop space for building things 🤓

Enjoy! 11m SSB nets are fun, Charlie Tango and Delta Romeo nets are good, there should be a list of nets to try out. The T2LT antennas are good for 11m

    Hi Carl
Wish I was going to the Bluedot but my recent house move to North Yorkshire has taken precidence !
As an aside, at the July meeting of the Harwell Amateur Radio Society ( HARS ) we had a talk by Prof Ian Morrison G0DMU - The Story of Jodrell Bank. . . . which was fascinating !!
( For those who don't know, Bluedot is held in the shadow of the radio telescope at Jodrell Bank. )
Also a couple of 'flag poles' at a jaunty angle would give you a multi band Delta loop - like the G4YKB Delta Loop Antenna, and would give you 40m - 4m ( but you would need an ATU ) although you would not perhaps be able to mount a huge flag if more than a light breeze !

I love anything to do with space and EME always interested me,tried it years ago with quite large yagi’s and although RX was fine I think you need mega power to punch through.I used 2m at the time and there was plenty of skeds back then.I am still in a few groups and it seems to be still quite popular.
That flag pole looks like the ones i picked up a few weeks ago to convert, does it have a white heavy solid glass fibre ground spike?
