    I am from Costa Rica but I have lived in New Jersey for nearly 25 years.In the town that I live there is a large community of people from Ireland.I have many Irish friends.They are kind,humble and hard working people.A long ago I had the pleasure of seeing Paddy Reilly at the Bar Irish Cottage in West Orange playing his good music.He went up to the bar with his violin and began to delight us with beautiful songs but one in special caught my attention "The Fields of Athenry"..... This Sunday,March 13/2022 the 69th West Orange St. Patrick's Day Parade will be held at 12 midday. 🙏 😀

    My long missed ‘Pop’ left Kilrush, County Clare as a young Man in the 1930’s. Like many others all he had was empty pockets, a head full of dreams, a strong back and a desperate desire to live a better life! His only regret was having to leave to do it! He made a life and a Family, had many adventures and together with many other ‘Paddys’ worked his way from Building site to Building site,rebuilding another Mans Country,While his was waiting for the ‘Celtic Tiger’ to roar! He would have loved to see how Ireland has progressed,and it’s people living in a peaceful and far more prosperous Society than back in the hard times he left.He never managed to make that long,long Journey back,(he died due to complications caused by falling from a ‘WIMPY’s Scaffolding that failed) aged 58 in the early 70’s.I miss him every day,but this song can bring him back to my memory in a heartbeat,They worked damn hard,but they could ‘play’ just as well and my overall memory of growing up ‘Manchester Irish’ is of Love,Laughter and pride!

      I used to frequent the Dubliner in Washington, DC. Paddy was friends with the owner and came often to that bar. I spent hundreds of hours listening to Paddy in a barroom. No better setting for Irish music, and no one better to be singing than Paddy.

      it's OK being born then to witness him playing live. but you'd be handling the struggles, the North 'Doire ' but knew where would an wouldn't be safe. being Catholic living in West coast ya know ya man nxt yous but further south leaving Dublin in 72' after the Party divided cause ya man Adams wanted none of it. I was just legal and answered the call, fw was training off to Arboe. Co, Tyrone. ya can't trust anyone apart from small few. You wouldn't have wanted the rest of what came with those times 😢 . in 84' after going Doire at 15yrs old. life was never the same . you didn't miss a whole lot dear .❤

    I met Paddy a few weeks ago in a pub in Dublin. Still in good form and looking well. I remember him singing at a regular gig in Liberty Hall, Dublin every Friday Night way back in 1967. He always sang Deportees and James Connolly.. As a Clare man I love this song that was written by an English man Ralph McTell.

    • @malachy1847
      @malachy1847 5 лет назад +2

      Ralph met a Young Clare Lad on that Building Site.. the lad was about seventeen / eighteen barley shaving putting up 'Shuttering' Pans ... Ralph asked him how thing were with him and how he was doing ... he replied," It's a Long ... Long... Way from Clare to Here.." ... that stuck with him and formed the link that played out in those Lyrics thus he gathered together snippets of what those Irish Navvies were saying, ''Er getting up late on Sundays i never get Mass" ... too tired to write a letter back to home and the like, all prime source historical material from a generation that's now early before their time ...'Building up and Tearing England Down"... ruclips.net/video/BqATmWWFNSE/видео.html

      This of one my favourite profound and philosophical Irish saying. Often use it as a business analogy too. You can't get to where you want to be if you don't know where you are today. In a simpler sense it just makes me laugh every time I hear it or say it with the cheeky Irish irony of the phrase. Thanks for reminding me and helping my laugh on a tough morning.

    • @rossageraghty
      @rossageraghty 8 лет назад +3

      gingerjoe1972 . Indeed this is a sad song. it is a story about a man from County Clare living in England. In the 1950s irish people emigrated to England to work and escape poverty. Many thrived but many did not. Of those misfortunate some got caught in a vicious circle of working and drinking. Enough time passed and they were too ashamed to go home or contact their families. Sad indeed 😔
