In my years of driving experience I know that snow in tread grips snow better than rubber. Mud is mud and rock is rock so lugs are needed. Sipes are a huge deal in everything.

    Good options for winter conditions:
Nokian Hakkapeliittas LT 3, various sizes up to 315/70 R17 (35")
    Nokian Hakkapeliitta 405, size 38"x15.50 R15
    Nokian Hakkapeliitta 44, size 475/70 R17 (44")
All three are available as studded or studless tires.
    Sidenotes:
Nokian Hakkapeliitta 405, has been used by Arctic trucks on both the North and South pole. Its the same tire BBC Top Gear used in its polar special, it is also used on all of the Arctic Trucks Experience vehicles on Iceland.
Nokian Hakkapeliitta 44 is currently used by Arctic trucks on the South pole.

Just got M/T Boss, on a Wrangler jl 2door ,,2wd only to see how good they are.
Snow all kinds up to 2 feet, was actually surprise to see how well the side walls stayed clear,
was able rutt in and out as other vehicles came up on the trail👍
    Wet,👍
    Noise, 👍
Checked on asphalt with packed and slushy conditions, T/C kicked in occasionally, so for safety went 4x4. No issues then.
Pleased with the tire and choice made. In the dry 👍
👎With a 4.75-0/off set due to cleaning ability they pepper nicely.
    I can live with it.
Good information in your videos...Keep it up!!👍🤙

Viewer outside the USA here, I use BFG KO2s in the midlands of England. The KO2s work well here, they grip the sandy grippy soil of the Peak District well and they are good on the road as well because they are almost as quiet as stock tyres. Finally, it is reassuring that they are 3PMSF rated for the occasional snow we get here.

This is extremely helpful for me living right on the 45th parallel! I’ve been struggling to decide what tire would cover all of my bases best for my northern conditions, daily off-road driving, and plenty of highway miles too. Currently running some Cooper Evolution M/Ts on my Ram 2500 diesel, and I’ve been fairly happy with them. But, of course, they’re wearing out pretty quickly. I knew they would. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with winter traction being labeled as an M/T. But, just looking to up my traction on hardpack snow and possibly add a little tread wear life. Thanks for the help in my search.

I've also used those for the past decade, although I haven't gotten them on my new truck yet, and even in 2H with a lunch box locker I had enough traction to get people easily back on the road who got stuck in the snow up in MT charleston.

Was set on the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss until you mentioned that the 37x12.5x17 doesn't have the 3 peak rating. Grrr... does anyone have any experience with this specific tire in the snow - specifically the hard packed slick stuff? M/T's do fine overall in the light powdery stuff but suck on the compacted snow.

From all of my research so far, the baja boss a/t is a great tire for all conditions and is highly recommended for driving in the snow. Also from my research, I am pretty sure the reason why the 37x12.50 isn’t 3 peak rated is because the tire is wider than 11 inches. I seriously doubt that it makes that big of a difference. I say you should grab a set of them!

I have the Cooper ST Max as well. They sucked in the snow until I had them siped and then they were ok. For about everything else I’ve grown at them wheeling and overlanding they have been pretty decent. Options are just limited in the size I want (255 80 R17) I’d love to try a Goodyear but they refused to cover a tire under warranty years ago and I swore I’d never buy another set. (Yea I know Goodyear now owns Cooper so my next set will be something else)

I’d honestly want you’re opinion on tires I should run out in Hawaii. Sand dirt roots and 60% rock ,some lave rocks are sharp. Toyota pickup daily driven. Already has 6 inch suspension lift.

    • @TrailBuilt

I'm not sure which region of Virginia you're in, but that state is considered to have four seasons. This means an A/T tire is most likely your best option. The BFGoodrich KO2 A/T and the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W are among the most popular choices for states that experience four seasons. Consider taking a look at those!

Are there winter specific tires that are 35 inches?

Any tire with the siping (squiggly lines) the more the squiggly lines the better in snow along with a softer compound.

Me right now so confused on what tires to purchase. I have a 2013 JKU that came with a 4 inch lift. I live in new England and this is my daily driver but we do hit the trails on the weekends so I need a tire that’s gonna be good in snow, rain and mud I don’t wanna be sliding all over the place or hydroplaning.

You lost me when you put KO2's in your list. They have been rubbish down here is AUSTRALIA for the last few years. Their compound is just not the same and don't like stopping in the wet........ Even their rep admitted to this!!! Yes there are people who swear by them and will disagree with my opinion but there are many who would agree.
Not sure why maxxis razr AT or razr MT don't make the list..
