In some ways a good villain is more important than a good hero. Keeps the tension going in the story. This breakdown of how to write them terrifying was so perfect. :)

For the “give them likeable qualities,” I 100% agree. Mine is terrifying and shows no empathy, he kidnapped his enemy’s girlfriend, and murdered his best friend, but I thought it would be really funny, to make him love salsa dancing. So I added it and for some reason everyone loves it, thanks for the advice.

I did enjoy the video, although I'm still struggling my antagonist. He's a family man, and is the head of the main city's security forces who is sworn to protect innocent citizens. The way he is polar opposite to my mc is that while she is empathetic and understanding she longs to belong someplace. For him, he is a strong pillar in the community, but he is very quick to judge things on a black and white scale, good and evil people. His goal is to make make his own secret army to fight the evil people that lie in the city, but the soldiers are made with souls.
I still can't pinpoint exactly what made him decide to take this course of action and continue as throughout the story he still has experiments to perfect these soldiers.

    • @midnightXcross
      @midnightXcross  3 года назад +16

If he's a family man, perhaps something happened to his family? For example, a family member could have been badly injured by one of the bad people in the series. Because he cares so much about his family, it would make sense that that could cause him to shift into a darker type of personality, who goes after the evil people for revenge.

I'm not a professional writer but maybe you can make his morals important bout not his only thing. As he story grows stakes rise he could become so dependant on it that he might start doing things that are the polar opposite. Like rightness slowly get taken out of context. If he's a family man maybe he does something to his family goes off the brink and uses one of his children for experiments. I think just show how desperate he becomes to the point that him a family man would be willing to do bad things to his family.
And to be even more ironic go with the creators suggestion something bad happens to his family in the first place. Just make it obvious he losing it so bad that even his community maybe is losing trust in him. Let him do something that is morally grey if he's a black and white character something at the start he would have never done but now yes.
Or make him and the mc be equal in power but as he goes off his morals he gains more influence things and make her become weaker.

What if he kills other families and tears them apart just because he immediately assumes they're all criminals? You can still let him assume that his family is perfect and that everyone else needs to be corrected to meet his criteria of an "innocent civilian?"

    • @briannas.6741

I don't know if you still need help with this a year later, but I will still add something! Like Midnight said, something happening to his family could be a great tipping point. Something I learned about character development is this: People constantly make decisions based on the desire to avoid pain. For example, you might snooze your alarm clock in the morning because the pain of getting out of your soft cozy bed outweighs the potential pain of being late to work. Anyway, your villain has the potential to do horrible things and even put himself through excruciating pain because the possibility of losing his family is a much greater pain. And he will do whatever it takes, even at the expense of others, to keep them safe.
I'm also sensing that he might have an issue with perfectionism, needing everything to be just so. People who rise to the top in their profession are *really* good at what they do, so he would expect others to meet those expectations. When others don't, they face the consequences--because they're in his way of achieving his goal.

An actually really good example of these tips is Baal/Raiden Shogun from Genshin Impact. She’s terrifying because she shows how strong she is, she shows no empathy when she takes someone’s vison, she thinks what she’s doing is good because it sustains the heavenly principles and she’s very powerful. She gets rid of Signora in a flash without batting an eye, and that’s terrifying. But she’s also humanized. Despite being a god, she’s had to witness the death of her sister and her friends. She’s doing what she’s doing now because of what happened to them and she thinks it’s right.

l really love how Demon slayer humanizes the antagonists by showing us how many of them were abused victims in their past and sadly, they never got the help that could've turned them into good people. However, the series never justifies their evil actions as they still need to be stopped because they have become a danger to others and themselves.

@@midnightXcross This is the reason many horror movie villains are iconic, because they show them going around killing people and doing other horrific shit, and they usually don't shy away from dumbing down the villains to not be too violent or disturbing. Jigsaw, Pennywise, and Leatherface come to mind for me when I think of good horror movie villains. So many media tries to sugar coat their villains to appeal ro a wider audience, which usually looks stupid. Other examples of this include villains such as griffith, doflamingo, ans the major from hellsing. The mangas these villains come from do not shy away from showing raw evil in it's purest form, as they are shown committing absolutely gruesome and disturbing things.

Oooooh!! Great video as always 🌸🌸
I actually wanted to know, how can i make the antagonist, that is not a person or incorporeal (like a tsunami, or a natural disaster or an illness) more terrifying? I really don't want it to fall flat, so advice on such storylines like this would be great to hear 🥺🌸🌸🌸
In my project there's a villain in a form of illnesses that many magic users experience, with the main character being the one who can help with them in a least invasive method possible.
So that's why i wanted to know how to make sure that the readers understand how terrifying the consequences of these illnesses can be

    • @midnightXcross
      @midnightXcross  3 года назад +3

      Thank you so much!! 😊
That's a super interesting question, and I like the fact that you are thinking outside the box and creating a villain that is not a character.
I suppose what I would do is create a lot of suspense surrounding the illness. At first, foreshadow how bad it really is by showing the results of the illness in prominent characters in the story. Then as you continue, show more and more results of that illness (possibly make it worse over the story?) I think when it comes to this type of villain, it needs to be a slow build up of suspense, so that you can really amp up the tension over the course of the book.

  • @laurenaspreyart

I think it would be interesting to create the villain as quite similar to your hero except for one or two key differences. Maybe the hero wants to save people because it’s the right thing, but the villain wants to save people because they want the glory that comes with it. Syndrome and Homelander come to mind

This is VERY helpful for me since the writing I'm currently doing is considered in psychological terms and mental discord. I'm currently in a battle between my take on Count du St Germain and an OC known as Ricardo Blackmore (been with me since 2018/2019) Count du St Germain wants to create a paradise where order is obtained through immortality via their design (my take on the famed alchemist is a shapeshifter and the gender is considered unknown but can be seen as male) of mechanical hearts and artificial life. Ricardo is the complete opposite and desires natural terms while using forbidden magic to cure his cursed body. Other characters such as Redgrave, Edmund Adeline, Laura Cempage, Jackson Edward, Charlotte Emori (her witch name being Odile), and many more are thrown into the mix and affected by the Count's experiments. All the tales I'm currently working on span throughout different times (ie Ancient Greece, The Great War, and Modern Era) and different locations but are affected by the Count's antics. Again, it's a working progress.

Really enjoyed this video, although I am curious: I want to try creating a terrifying villain not necessarily as a character, but as an organisation. Would the tips you gave more or less stay the same where applicable, or would you suggest other approaches towards this end goal?
For context, I want to try creating a situation where my protagonist is essentially alone with one or two rag-tag allies a la Avatar, but those characters are being hunted by a sinister secret organisation. The common people don't even know this organisation exists, and the few who might know are usually dismissed as conspiracy theorists and crackpots by the general populace, a la The Illuminati/Majestic 12 in the Deus Ex franchise for example. Only the main characters have escaped from the clutches of the organisation and possess a possible risk of blowing their cover, so the organisation is hunting them down to preserve their secret a la Interior Military Police from Attack on Titan.
The conundrum comes in here: I want to make this Organisation feel omnipresent, overpowering without them having to be overt about it. I want this Organisation to make my main characters feel constantly on edge, paranoid, feel as if they're constantly being hunted. For the feeling I want this organisation to give the main characters, I quote from Caesar of the video game Fallout New Vegas "If I can reach out and kill whoever I feel like, then they know the only reason they're alive is because I haven't tried yet". Or to quote Sovereign from Mass Effect 1 "You exist because we allow it, and you will end because we demand it". I want that secret Organisation to give that feeling to my main characters as they try to stay out of its grasp. And for all the protagonists know, this Organisation cannot be beaten in any obvious way: using any public announcement or public channels will just tip off the Organisation's agents to their location; going to the authorities is too much of a risk because, even disregarding the fact that they need tangible proof, they could be on the Organisation's payroll, or controlled through blackmail, Organisation sleeper agents in high positions, and the like.
So I guess my question is: how do I make this villanous Organisation terrifying while keeping them as an overall nebulous presence? I do plan on having my protagonists come to blows with their individual agents, but I want the majority of the terror evoked to be from the Organisation itself and not the individual Agents. So do you have any tips on how to go about that?

i have this villain in mind. he will appear in one of the first few arcs but will only have his major arc LATER LATER LATER in the story. it's like i'm going to mirror the villain to my mc. the story revolves around my mc but at one point, what that villain does before his own arc are also shown as if it's a side story that occurs outside the main plot which is the story of the mc. (i'm horrible at explaining)
He is a creature (i have not think of it yet but i already have a design in my mind lol) from another world reborn in earth as a mere odd embryo. a scientist found him and nurtured him in a lab for 32 years, took 3 years to get used with earth's nature/environment and by the time in the story he's been living outside the lab for 3 years. He has the power to erase someone existence and transfer anything to a different dimension without temperature or time with just a touch of hand and many other abilities that make him invincible.
He looks just like a normal adult human. But he acts like a child most of the time. the scientist who took him theorize that it's because he's alive for six years outside the capsule in the lab so it's like he's mentally 6 years old, at least half of his brain is.
why only half a brain? because he do act like an adult and have this elegant demeanor. even if he acts like a child sometimes he is also a RAPIST (mf have a room with lots of TOYS and sh-t where he keeps 'his' girlies) and can easily hide his murders by erasing evidences with the ability i said earlier.
I think what makes my protagonist characters fear him is because even if he is acting like a harmless child, they can still sense his sinister aura with murderous intent. you can say it's like referenced or inspired by INCUBUS.
also he have a group of allies, one of them is a literal 6 years old child who's the son of the scientist's niece. his niece is a rape victim, she actually wants to keep the baby but she died during labour. yep the scientist niece is a rape victim yet he is raising a rapist bruh. the villain im talking about is very close to this child because you see they kind of grow up together- shit i'm talking too much

The villain I wrote is supposed to be the child of the protagonist's worst enemy and the woman he loves. He takes in the child, thinking he could benefit from having them around, get some information about where their father is and find out secrets about the government their father rules over. At first the kid seemed like a normal child, although they didn't show much reaction to anything, the protagonist just assumed the child was either traumatized for having a evil father or they were absolutely clueless about what's going on around them and resorted to not caring as a coping mechanism. The protagonist and his sidekick soon grow fond of the child, which was their worst mistake. This child reveals to know a little too much about everything and everyone, when asked how they know that, they just say "They told me". The sidekick, being the hotheaded one, starts telling the protagonist that the kid is problematic and can't stay, but despite being afraid of the child, the protagonist has grown far too attached to the seemingly innocent child.
One of the kid's phrases is; "See? I made you grow attached to me. Now you can't leave me, and I can't leave you. We need eachother."

I relate to the feeling of wanting to protect my family. Although, forgive me if I'm wrong, but your fears and thoughts of turning bad and hurting them sound a lot like OCD, in the form of intrusive thoughts. It might help if you recognise when a bad thought is happening, and try and think of the opposite thought instead. For example, when you start thinking that you might turn bad, think about all the reasons you're good instead. I'm not a psychologist, but I have struggled with other intrusive thoughts in the past (more anxiety related), and thinking about the opposite thoughts always helped me.

    • @cedricburkhart3738

@@midnightXcross Well I don't think it's intrusive thoughts it's more like that's one of the things I find if I hunt around for things that really bother me. I don't have a problem with what you said thigh because for all you knew I really might have needed help. So that's for caring enough to say that.
Anything to do with my family getting hurt and it being my fault bothers me. But I think because I am that way I'm the kid of prison who is really unlikely to hurt them. It's almost like the feeling I get when I'm standing really high up in the air and think what if I jumped off it's just a little creepy to think about the possibility. Siting in church it bothers me when they say you should put God before your family or love God more than your family. It just really feels like a hard thing to ask and it worys me that people might put whatever they think God wants before what's good for there family. Like missionaries taking their wife and kids into dangerous places or taking dangerous risks that means they might not come home. These things have happened before and I just wish people would try harder to do what's best for there family because I just ges that's how I feel. It's really important to me that if I ever get a wife and children that there safe and doing well. If you think I'm strange that's okay because I am strange.😆

Why, I never ! Your video has helped me SO much develop a villain of mine I had in mind for MONTHS, so, thanks to your video, it has improved my writing skills for a villain in particular, so I greatly thank you for these tips on how to write a genuinely petrifying villain ! Of course, telling you my villain would be a *pleasure*, or for anyone who is interested into reading this ! It is particularly an undertale OC of mine which involves a lot for the alternate AU's concept, so, I will follow along for who my villain is and what he is made out of ! : His name is "E.O.S." ! It is an acronym for "Error of Sorrow" ! Now, in short words, he is a 6 foot tall, slightly glitchy, yet a black appearing skeleton who has a shiny yellow smile or grin that he can use to open, frown, you name it ! He has slight squares at his skull structure, and he has yellow, menacing eyes with black slit as pupils or black tiger pupils if you will and some yellow strings lining down until at his cheeks ! For his clothing, as you have said it would be needed, he wears a black jacket that has yellow fluff around the hood of the jacket ! He also wears (fancy) yellow leathered oxford shoes, plus he wears black, fancy smokey trousers, and he also wears a yellow top hat with a red ribbon that is on it !
Haha, now the personality, all for those who are interested (including the creator of this video ! 🥳) : He is an extremely charismatic and charming skeleton who puts up a perfect facade into making people think he is this generous, playful guy who is willing to accompany them on a few places. Overall, he is extremely manipulative and deceiving, being capable of having a perfected facade of who he is, being an incredibly good liar, and for those who don't know his real persona adore him. But for those who know his real persona, they fear him. Why ? Simple, because besides his manipulative and deceiving persona, he is an utter psychopath who has no sympathy or empathy for *nobody* else, and has no remorse with what he does, in fact, he enjoys it, making him turn out to be an sheer sadist. About that, he is also, as if said, very charming and charismatic, he *loves* singing and dancing, he has a lot of confidence about himself, and with an entertaining chemistry, he can also come off as utterly sarcastic or disrespectful at times, plus, he can be a bit of a goofball at times, like how he loves spinning at chairs, or how he does tend to steal cookies at times and is very determined in his goal he kept in mind. And that goal is to become god. He wants to rule over the multiverse and turn it into its own hell as well where the evil prevails, and where the good...passes away or suffers. He is also stylish, always wanting to look good and fancy wherever he shows up ! He is also very cocky, especially in battles, due to his huge skill in terms of combat and his sword skills ! He is a VERY powerful skeleton, actually being a god, but as for the *sins* he represents, it's ***greed*** and ***pride***. Finding pride in what he does, and his greed motivating him into becoming more powerful.
Bonus ! : He is also straightforward with what he wants. And for a nice new change, he gets bored easily with monologues, as his goal is very simple ! Stuff he SAYS are put in simple sentences for everyone to understand. Of course, his intelligence is really high ! Making that up to 160 until 180 ! He also has a liking towards owls ! One, because he finds them fluffy, quiet and adorable, and two, because they are shown to be a symbol of evil, which he likes. Of course, he is a caring person in his family, but outside of his family, he cares about nobody but himself. With his sheer electrical capabilities, bone magic, blasters, or his physical strength, telekinesis, his yellow strings, or blasters or, well, his own glitched teleportation is what makes him a VERY hard opponent to defeat, making the protagonist have BOTH a hard time to overcome him both mentally and physically, because he has scarred many heroes, INCLUDING the protagonist along the run. For now, that is it !

    • @cookiebiscuit3666
      @cookiebiscuit3666 Год назад

. A small factor is also he glitches by the amount of what his emotions are. If he is happy, he will glitch less, but the more insane or angrier he gets, the more he'll glitch. Plus, he THINKS he's god and thinks he can do whatever the hell he wants to do, sometimes not thinking about the consequences either, due to his cockiness and arrogance. He can also face shift his face into any person he wants to do to use it for sadistic reasons or just out of mockery as well. Whenever he has a charming smile, or his wide, sadistic grin, it definitely keeps the balance of him making him look like he's normal, but when his real persona shows up, it makes him really scary too ! And he loves the thrill and the chase as well when it comes to what he does

Im trying to find a way to make the main villain terrifying while also being wary of the hero. The mc is about 10000 years old around 6000 years in the future and the villain is almost as old. They were friends at first until the villain did something disgusting in a war which he charted as neccesarry to survive, something he said the mc wouldn't understand due to his inability to die. Later he finds some kind of element which bonds with him granting him powers almost on the scale of the mc, the difference between him and the mc is his dedication and intelligence. He knows the mc could kill him, if he stopped holding back. Im trying to have this one scene where he dismisses the mc as a threat due to holding his wife hostage and admits to being scared of him, while trying to keep his threat/fear level up.

I’m making a visual novel called Tragedy and the character Kayden Kall kidnapped and killed Lilia with her own scissors (the scissors are Lilia’s) and Lilia’s bf Aden was in the corner and he had to watch her die and before she died Kayden left and Aden ran to Lilia and Lilia said "…we… could…ve… be…en … …ma…rrie…d…" and then… her grip on Aden’s hand slackened and with a dull thud/splash her hand fell to her side.
Edit: I changed her death scene. She was still killed with her own scissors (slowly getting a massive whole in her to be exact) and then when Kayden was done Aden walked in and Kayden threw Lilia who landed on Aden bringing them both to the ground and Kayden ran.
Edit 2: I’ve changed her death AGAIN

I love writing villains. They are so fun to write and trying to make the reader (and myself) hate and love them, is the best feeling in the world.
-In my story when the villain arrived I wanted it to be a funny scene before it got more dramatic. I made The villain seem a bit too stereotypical (on purpose) and made the protagonist make fun of him (telling him that he's coming off to strong, acting like a villain in kids stories, and etc.). *The villain thinks what he is doing is absolutely right* and that he needs to kill the protagonist *no matter what* (even if it killed him). The villain in the first fight, *almost killed the hero to send a feeling of fear that he is strong enough to actually kill the protagonist with ease.*
The protagonist *forgot about most of the events that happened in the fight*, and when he met the villain again, he thought he was fimilar but *didn't remember him* (which is real concerning because *he doesn't know that he's a big threat*).
Then later on the story, the villain *slowly manipulates the protagonist* to think that his best friend ment harm to him and that he was a liar, and that he *should join his side*. *The protagonist does join his side*, and they do bad things together (*but the protag isn't aware*) and the *protag best friend thinks that the protag is now evil*.
    Villain bio:
    Name: Vincent
Sin: lust, wrath (the wrath to kill any demon, spirit, monster, and people who get in his way- note demons and monsters in my story aren't necessarily evil, kind of like humans, they can have any alignments) (The lust- strong desire- to see the protagonist and the people of Valor in great suffering)
Trait similar to protag: he will do anything to reach his goal. They are both misunderstood by the majority. And they are both psychopathic (the villain is more servere than the protag who is mild).
Unsettling trait: very manipulating to the point where you can't tell. He seems a bit to "clean" and "formal" than his personality.
How is your villain written? I would like to hear your ideas in the comments. If you want to know more about my story, I will gladly answer any questions you have.

i found everything that i planned for my villain in this video and im sure that it means its gonna be a great villain.. the villain is lucifer, he is the devil who was once a PRIDEful perfect being of god and because of his pride and superiority his brother was the reason his career ended.. Lucifer is the older brother of the mc called Ragnar which is his human name..biologicaly ragnar is an angel from heaven but he got his name when he was sent to earth being adopted since a baby from a viking village so they named him ragnar..he was born with a "difference" compared to his royal angel family..he was the only one born without divine energy which is the main source of power ..lucifer because of that he lost his mind due to his prideful perfect being image being ruined by a newborn brother of his with a difect..he started to rust into a demon because of his sin and sin is the opposite of divine creatures so if they sin they start to rust into demons but lucifers mentality and emotions changed to a level of hell by raging and going beserk destroying his concept of an angel rusting to a demon which led the world into darkness and pure terror from his regret after being sent to hell..so luficer to every being is the deffinition of nightmare and fear itself which no one would even want to expirience a bit

    Question
My character has a shit ton of off setting things to him
Like the fact that he looks gross and he has an odd smell to him
His hair is crusty and dry, he has massive eye bags, some of his teeth are cat teeth and some of them are human teeth
He is so skinny that you could see his heart beating
He is 10ft tall and part cat part human
And finally he could deform his body to turn himself into a cat or sort of monster but by doing so he has to recreate his bones by making himself bigger or smaller and that makes gross crunchy creamy squishy sounds
Those are some things about him
Would that be too much? Cause he is meant to be gross and icky and make the reader feel grossed out

He is also kinda dead? In a way?? Hard to explain

@@slevinchannel7589 Hmm well in most basic story writing advice, I would suggest that they write a little summary of the beginning, middle and end of their story. But for very basic advice, I would simplify this further and have the story structured like:
      What is the problem?
What do the characters do to solve the problem?
      What is the result?
After all, every story, even the most simple ones, all start from a problem.
Then what I would do is take a simple children's story, and show how it works with the three simple question plan. Every basic story will always fit into the simple three question plan. I think if children plan out their stories and ask themselves these questions when creating it, it can make the process a lot easier. I hope this helps 🙂

My uploads have been limited to one per week lately, because I was taking a break for my mental health. However, I hope to get into a more steady schedule from now on, with a bonus video per week also.

If you want to truly understand lack of empathy watch animals. Watch a house cat hunt, not for food, but just for fun.
