    Growing up playing the Gran Turismo games, I always assumed everyone knew about rally stuff. Now one of my favorite things is seeing reactions from fans of other sports see just how different rally is from any other motorsport, or just any other sport, really. Especially from the US, where small cars and hatchbacks are being less and less common, seeing people realize that they rally in little 3-doors makes me happy.

    • @Dakota__69
      @Dakota__69 2 года назад +4

      Also makes me angry the US didn't get the homologation GR Yaris. I'd spend all of my money for a 300+ hp Yaris with a manual, widebody, and 4WD with limited-slip diffs

    • @Dakota__69
      @Dakota__69 2 года назад +3

      ALSO: the reason the streets are still crowded and have cars parked nearby is that rallies are largely held on public roads. Some idiots will ignore the organizers and park right next to the course, but that's just kinda seen as part of the sport

    Great reaction EB. This brought back memories when rallying was popular on the TV in the UK many years ago, making me feel old😂. Extremely talented drivers.

  • @tonythemadbrit9479
    @tonythemadbrit9479 2 года назад +11

    Hi EB. You mention at 9' 15" that the passenger has to really trust the driver. As a former co-driver the reality is that both have to really trust one other, because the co-driver is helping the driver to go faster by making and reading pace notes. If the co-driver makes a mistake the result can be the same as a driver error or worse. You'd be amazed just how calm things can be in a rally car with an experienced crew despite how it looks from the outside.

    Of course all professional racing drivers are amazingly skillful, but I think rally drivers take the biscuit. So many roads, surfaces, hazards, weather conditions - and from beginning to end, "on the ragged edge" laser focussed concentration. They're made of something different to us regular folk.

  • @jackchallis9456

    Great reaction. I'm a fan of all motorsport, and no matter the vehicle or category, driving a car or motorbike at the absolute limit is really difficult. If you're not nearly crashing, you're not going fast enough. All racing drivers are athletes. These rally boys are next level though. I think they just have a lack of imagination. Most people wonder "what if". I don't think these guys do 😂😂

    And you're absolutely right, the rolls look spectacular but take the energy out of the impact. As long as the roll cage stays intact they'll be fine. Serious injuries are mostly caused by sudden stopping ✌

    I have never seen anything like the shot of the dog being saved because the car about to kill it hit a bump in the road and took off over the dog. This brings new importance to the saying "being at the right place at the right time" .There was a somewhat surprised look on the dog just as the car landed.

    The 3 wheeler is a Piaggio Ape. It's made in Italy by the same company that make the Vespa Scooter. They're originally made with a 49cc engine and various body types like pick-up or van. They're designed to fit down the narrow streets in Italy, but there's a whole racing scene where people upgrade them with racing suspension and a 600cc motorbike engine. They are scary as shit. Ps. Group B was the most insane rallying 600bhp+ super light, super short, AWD monsters that no normal human could drive. My favourite car was the Metro 6R4. It wasn't the fastest or the best handling, I don't think it even won a race. But it was based on Austin Metro, a tiny, 1.0 hatchback that British grandmas bought. It had wheel arch extensions that looked like they were made from old cornflakes boxes and was hurled down those dirt roads by a race derived 3.5 litre V6 mounted in the rear and driving all 4 wheels (6 cylinder Rear mounted 4 wheel drive). Audi, Lancia and Ford were building limited run specialist rally cars with sophisticaed turbo systems, Austin Rover? Nah, lets just shove a really big engine into a really small car

    27:06 Rally trucks :) They participate in endurance rallies and are STONKINGLY powerful. The most famous rally they run in is the Dakar, and they are crewed by 3 people: Driver, Co-Driver (Navigator), and Technician (Engineer/Mechanic). They are speed limited to 130 KPH, or 81 MPH, because they must weigh, without crew, fuel, or spares, 5,500 lbs. When they actually get rolling across the desert, it's a sight to behold, because literally nothing stands in their way. They'll happily smash THROUGH a sand dune rather than go over it if it's low enough. That specific truck is a Tatra 158 Phoenix Rally Truck.

Outstanding reaction. 👏 My butt was so 'puckered' I thought it was eating my drawers! 😱 Those drivers have amazing reflexes, control, presences of mind, and endure hours of pummelling. Brain surgeon's precision, squash player's reflexes, boxer's toughness, and marathoner's endurance. I've ridden in a road version similar to the car you asked about. It was the *Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2* (see Wikipedia) eventually *592 hp, 0-62mph in 3.1 seconds.* . Maybe the first successful 4WD Rally car? One of our company owners got a road version. He showed off by going from 60-100+mph on a motorway. It was _scary_ fast!

The standard model is used throughout Italy as cheap delivery wagons or might have a coffee shop/food cart fitted in the rear - some idiots think it's fun to race them - you might watch Guy Martin when he made his own racing 3 wheeler with the intention of taking it to Italy for fun (sections of the program are on YT but couldn't see the full episode). The co drivers, the good ones know every inch of the course. He would have called out the dip a few seconds before they got to it.
    You need 2 absolute ballers in that vehicle to be a champion.
    Also you might pick up that a lot of them are Finnish, those guys behind the wheel of a rally car redefine crazy.

    A World Rally Car has around 300bhp going through 4 wheels. A TT Superbike has around 230bhp going through 1 wheel and substantially less weight!

    Totally different class to normal racing. Going fast on a race circuit, wide track, clear zone off track, crash barriers, gravel run-off, tyre / soft barrier areas at critical areas is one thing.
    To run on uneven, loose surface, narrow tracks, with solid obstacles right on edges of the track. Jumps/off camber corners, unexpected moving animals/people in wrong place that is significantly more demanding.

    Audi Quattro S1 Group B.
    214 built, 160 for the road (homologation rules)
    Approx 1985/6 era
    $500,000 plus if you can find a road model and probably you can double that figure for the full rally version.

    26:42 Audi Quattro
    Audi were the first to make a four wheel drive car which helped them dominate, besides when Lancia took the title from them. Great battles back in the 80's

    The car you asked about is an Audi Quattro from Group B Racing. They got rid of Group B because the cars were to fast.

    For Group B I was all about the Lancia Delta but once it was gone, I grew up to be a big Group A Mitsubishi Lancer fan. (Though the WRC face-off between the Delta and the Toyota Celica in the early 90s was pretty exciting as they were such different vehicles yet so closely matched.) Sadly when the Subaru Impreza kept winning events it made things too dull (like with Ferrari in F1 for a long time). When it pretty much feels like its become a forgone conclusion its not fun anymore.

    17:00 is a blind rally, they run the course without learning it first. That corner took a lot of cars out as you can probably tell.

    I watched a documentary on adrenaline junkies and what drives them. They put heart monitors on people and asked them to do some shit. Almost all of them had their heart rates go mental. On the rally drivers it only went up a small amount in comparison to the rest. The cars are so strong that it's rare that anyone gets seriously injured or killed.

    That type of transmission is called sequential.
    You push stick forward to go to higher gear and you pull it back to go to lower gear.
