    Tips from a fitter welder:
    Push while using mig don’t pull
    When drilling you should have relatively high rpm but also be using coolant or cutting compound
    Instead of welding the bearing in (this will most likely ruin the bearing) use a locking compound such as locktite, whith light heat you will still be able to remove the bearing

      Or buy slightly smaller pipe and press in if you have a lathe

      I change drill speed up/down to try to get curls/chips but never too much pressure and I use motor oil because I keep forgetting to order cutting oil.
      Yes: If there's SLA, then DRAG else if GASS then PUSH. Hundreds of Utoob videos about that.
      The Locktight suggestion is a good one. I'll remember it......

      TIPs like this are what I need. I watch all these videos on MIG welding where they go into so many (potentially unnecessary for a beginner like me) details about things like the relationship between arc length and voltage, yet they never mention push or pull.

      Why not use a waxed canvas? You can buy the canvas material and wax it yourself.

    • @OverlandUnderBudget
      @OverlandUnderBudget  4 года назад +3

      @@justinwhisenhunt2661 actually tried this first! it was awesome but it after leaving it open for a couple days the canvas stretched in the stress areas creating saggy spots. Another issue was that in the direct sun the wax would heat up and become very transferable and soft. If you left it open at night when you went to put it back it was hard as a rock since the wax gets hard as it cools.

    If no one has said it....get the welder nozzle closer to the weld. .
    You'll have cleaner welds and you can turn down the shielding gas (expensive) ...turn the heat down as well and you can weld continous.
    Been welding since I was 13/14...54 now. Thousands and thousands of feet of welds.
    Great job. I am a welder/smithy and I sew as well. ...gonna sew up some army surplus awning material ...heavy, but it's an E350...she can handle it.

    I'm almost 65 and have never had the guts to learn how to weld... YOU have the guts to learn new things!!! If I had the guys when I was your age I would be living in a DIY Skylab somewhere just past Saturn learning something new! My point is this... never stop learning and always follow your dreams. Last month I bought a MIG welder and am learning how to weld. I've been a cabinetmaker for 30+ years and that has kept me busy and having fun, BUT I have always looked over my friend's shoulder wishing I had the guts to learn to weld. Thankfully that time has arrived!!!! Awesome vid... keep up the great job(s).

      Your fabrication skills are clearly excellent and will make welding easy.
      Mig is point and squirt and gets great looking results but also makes bad habits easily.
      Buy a little arc box if you really want to learn to weld properly-I gives you more time to observe your weldpool,arc etc.
      Mig is just so convenient though.
      Anyway happy welding and good luck.

    I love watching newbies getting into welding. Lol.. it's called a bevel man. You want to put a bevel on the edge so your weld has a deeper penitration. You also want to mention how to set up your welder and what settings your using for the folks that have no idea what voltage and wire feed are for. That's an awesome welder your running. Super lucky to have won it! Congrats on that!!
    You have a great set up though.. you got it a lot better than I did when I first started. I welded all my roof racks outside. Under a tent. Mostly limited to working on projects up until winter hit. It was a struggle but I had a growing buisness for roof racks.. anyway. Great video man. I love the creativity and sleek design in this awning. I've made simpler fold out awning but I'm sure I will be making one of these for myself now. Thank you and good luck on your journey to becoming a fabricator.

I clamp my work pieces down and find that it is easier to control my tool/saw/drill/sander. Otherwise, this is a great video. I really appreciate your use of hearing protection and eye protection.

      Oil always helps, and anything over 3/8" I'd recommend a pilot hole. Otherwise, having an actually sharp drill bit, spinning as close to ideal RPM is the most effective.
      I don't like being the I told you so guy, but mild steel with a 1/4" bit like this would ideally be drilled at 1500 RPM which is probably more than max of the drill.

    Having a little welder around is awesome and super handy. I used the crap out of mine. More the. I ever thought. Buy the best you can afford or if life is kicking you in the balls like it’s currently treating me cash is a little tight. But I found a wire fed machine on cl for 40
    Bucks. Best 40 bucks I spent for a shop too. But check out the harbor freight flux 125 titanium machine. It’s super small, light, easy to use, and will do more little jobs around the shop. And it’s cheap. You can be up and running with no experience for less the. 300$. The welder and a portable or even a corded deep cut band saw two super cheap and maybe some of the most used tools in little diy shops. I know they are up
    There along with the shop vises. I never looked back once I bought those two
    And don’t know why the hell I waited so long to buy them.

      Not true, you can push or pull mig. Unless you run flux core but then that’s not mig......
      The shielding gas is always surrounding the weld otherwise you will get porosity and it needs to be fully ground out before trying to fix the weld otherwise you end up with more!

    • @cantfixasandwich4672
      @cantfixasandwich4672 4 года назад

      @@1966cambo if you push a weld, then go and make another pass pulling a weld with no change to the settings the heat will be inconsistent. the gas coming out of the tip will cool the puddle leaving a weld with less heat and penetration. point the nozzle forward and use the gas to clean in the direction that you are welding. good welding all starts with building consistency

    I LOVE that you went through all the tools you use in the beginning! Awesome tutorial! I've been thinking about welding as well, not quite in the budget yet. What would you suggest as an alternative if welder isn't available?
    If I may offer suggestion for video edits -when using the louder power tools, it would be lovely if you would adjust volume down. Having to constantly adjust the volume was distracting/inconvenient because I missed things that you said. So I would have to stop, rewind, and try listening again, but it was still difficult to time.
    Generally, I will add to comment section as a video is progressing so that I don't forget what I'd like to say/ask. Constantly having to adjust volume-rewind-playback-sometime rewind again-volume adjusting up and down through frequently proved to be too much for my patience tolerance levels. I'll check out more recent videos, hoping that this is no longer an issue because you really are an awesome teacher. Definitely someone I would like to learn from if/when your editing skill improves w/volume control. Or perhaps when I'm no longer premenstrual/premenopausal. 😉🤣

    Awesome build, it looks great, when hammering in the bearings its good to use a big washer or a socket so you're only hitting the outer race, rather than the force going through the bearing surface

    Welding tip, try moving in a lower case e form,. As if writing a cursive e over and over,. The welder sounds good but you want that heat to get in there,. I used to weld for full throttle suspension,. All day 8 to 10 hrs a day.

      @@hereusethis using 220 yes, it's just a mess to work with,. flux is good for working on out door areas ie farms ect.... Flux welds just have to be grinded more, mig will lay smooth if done right,. My welds never needed grinding, they just sand blasted the parts a coated them.

    Wow, Wow, Wow and thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing!!! I've been searching for a budget friendly solution for a camping setup so I can easily explore National Parks with my family. I have several purchases ahead of me and I'm concerned about how, and if they will all work together:
    • I would like to get a standard wheel-based minivan that will fit in an average-sized parking stall-one that will also work as an every day vehicle, with seating and seatbelts for 5 people;
    • a Roofnest sparrow XL, roof top tent; and
    • some sort of bug protection for a back camp kitchen-possibly a Carsule
    Questions:
    • Will this awning be too long for a minivan?
    • Could I modify the length of the metal tubing so it will work for a minivan?
    • Will I be able to pop open a rooftop tent with this awning attached to the roof rack?
    • What is the clearance above the roof rack? Depending on the minivan I choose I am concerned about the clearance for the Carsule at the back of the van.
    Any comments or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    Excellent Project!
    19:40 Another best practice for drilling metal is to use cutting oil. But, any oil is better than none. I typically use motor oil.

    • @OverlandUnderBudget
      @OverlandUnderBudget  4 года назад

      you are 100% right! i really need to get some cutting oil. Thank you!

    • @janeblogs324
      @janeblogs324 4 года назад

      No and no.
      Do not use oil, use coolant ie water. Try using spit, its like egg white and sticks to the drill also.
      Drilling/cutting requires friction to cut but hates heat. Making the cutting edge slip takes longer to drill.
      Not only does Oil smoke and burn, it contaminates the weld. Having to clean it for welding and painting is another useless step.
      You use oil when tapping etc, when all the chips and major surface area are causing friction.

    Cool project, just a tip on those saw blades, check the rpm of your saw. Most wood cutting chop saws exceed the rpm limit of those blades.

    Apparently, there is an old video, so you might not even see this. But I’d like to make a suggestion, which is that the hole that you drilled for welding, the bearing into the frame would also be perfect for a set screw.

    Nice build.
    A couple suggestions you don’t have to follow.
    When welding maybe use a little less stick out. Having the nozzle closer to the work will allow your shield gas to cover the area. You will get less Black soot.
    For your sanding disc on the grinder they have Flap Wheels. All the box stores including HF carry them. Makes fast prep work. I would also get a wire wheel for your grinder or drill to knock top rust off. Will last forever.
    Again nice build.

    very cool DIY video , i am a welder fabricator and i tell you that you made it simple and its the best way to do it when you learning , i would put a triangle bracket that can hold the weight at the top end of the roof rack ,where the awing support rest , just to be sure because when you offloading its up and down force applying to the structure ;) keep going . you are followed from France Bro ;)

    A nice product indeed. RUclips is full of these builds by now, and some are pretty poorly constructed, some have poor designs and some require poles.
    This is an excellent design.
    Question, where does the rain go? Does it run into the camper shell hatch opening? Yeah, I know.... sunny California, but some of us use our vehicles where it rains and snows.
    I would suggest to you that you focus a bit more on precision in your fabrication.
    And your future body will thank you if you get some saw horses or something to allow fabrication while standing. I'm old now and I wish I had worn knee pads and did way less work on the ground.

      The thing about showing your welding on the internet is that you'll get lots of advice from all the "experts" no matter how proficient you are! I had one clown tell me I needed to go to a hotter setting for more penetration. I guess he must no have been there when I was burning through at that setting. He also claimed he was a "welding inspector" for NASA! LMAO!

    Try to run a shorter stick out and do slower oscillation. It feels like it will burn through but just push the puddle back towards the weld and the back out.again though, looks great! And I love this awning idea
