Right on Jake, Thanks for stopping by. Now that you have fresh coolant, take an Electrolysis Measurment. That will be your "new baseline". Then recheck every 6 months, and see if the voltage rises. How neat is that? -Chuck
I could be wrong but I think what they are talking about is that by not using distilled water and the proper coolant you are lacking the proper buffers and adding minerals and ions that turn the coolant into an electrolyte and the cooling system into a giant battery (Al heads, iron block,etc.). And chemical batteries produce electric current by chemical reaction, eating away at the metal parts of the cooling system in the process of producing a current potential. I learned the hard way with my mid 70s T-Bird. I just checked the coolant for freezing point. I never changed out the coolant, I used my well water which was acidic and loaded with metal ions and after 7-8 years I started having numerous things spring leaks by being eaten away. Freeze plugs, water pump hose outlets, heater cores, you name it. My 03 GM I have been careful. I use nothing but distilled water and Premium Gold and my oem coolant tank looks like a container of Kool-Aid after 19 yrs 2 months. I think the test is to check if the coolant is not such a good electrolyte producing enough potential current to keep the “battery effect” low enough not to be harmful.
Right on Walter, Thanks for stopping by. You are correct. Even with using distilled water Electrolysis can still be an issue. A quick non-intrusive Electrolysis Measurement every 6 months during regular preventative maintenance is just another way to keep an eye on things. Just like how you regularly checked the freeze protection. -Chuck
Hey Chuck good video and info, I'm going to kind of stir the pot here a bit as you mentioned distilled water. Distilled water is actually corrosive as much as you may think its good for your cooling system. I'll relay a story a friend of mine who is a plumber told me. He had a customer who was complaining his copper pipes keep leaking. When he got there he discovered the home owner had a whole house reverse osmosis system which will filter out %99. 5 percent of all contaminates and minerals just like distilled water. He explained to me that water needs to be balanced this is why it has minerals in it. When stripped of all of its mineral content it seeks to balance its self again it was stripping copper ions from the pipes causing pin hole leaks. Distilled water in your radiator is going to do the same thing yes the anti freeze will prevent some but your playing one against the other. A better alternative is softened water which has the minerals removed by using salts. I know salts? thats going to eat up the system. It will not because the minerals removed are replaced with a salt ion not actual salt. So really if you got well water with a softener system you have the best water for your cooling system.
Right on Mr. E, Thanks for stopping by. You are correct. Distilled water is still water, and is corrosive. However, it’s the “least bad” option. It’s also the manufacturer recommendation, industry standard, and past practice. Distilled water is steam from boiling water. All that’s left is 2 hydrogen, an 1 oxygen atom. All impurities have been stripped. It’s cheap, and readily available, in all 50 states, ($0.97 a gallon at my local Walmart). Using it to temper coolant is an attempt to maintain quality control of the mixed coolant. As far as Manufacturer Dealerships, Independent Repair Facilities, and the average DIY for the past 30-40 years mixing coolant in the proper 50/50, 40/60, 60/40 ratio based on region with distilled water has proven to be a challenge to say the least. What you propose, even if superior at preventing corrosion, and electrolysis presents and even greater logistical challenge in locating a compliant well source, adding the correct, and proper amount of softening additives. I agree distilled water may not be the best option, but it’s the “least bad” option we have. -Chuck
That's some good info! Looks like there's a more recent Ford coolant the "Yellow" type which has more extended life on it and I was thinking about switching coolants. Would you be able to know if I can flush out the system and replace it with Yellow Coolant instead of the old Gold?
