  • Here is a video demonstrating my Pioneer RT-909 open reel recorder. This is a unique piece of equipment because it has been anodized in black. The quality of the finishes are extremely high. Whoever did this conversion paid great attention to detail and even anodized the dials, which is uncommon in these conversions.
    I hope you enjoy the demo. I will have another video demonstrating my entire hi-fi setup coming in the next few weeks including digital audio tape (DAT), cassette tape, digital recorder, spectrum analyzer and more. Be sure to stay tuned for that.

    I don't know if you know this, but the RT-909 did come in black. It was sold to educational and military institutions, not to the public. Those units had red lights for the counter and meter. Every once in a while you'll see one for sale.
    Nice one you have there! Congrats! I hope you still have it. I have a mint silver unit that I will keep forever.

    People who weren't alive back then don't realize how advanced analog gear was. In both pro and consumer gear, there was an amazing level of quality available if you wanted to pay for it.
    Certain items like this one, cost far more than their original purchase price, but you certainly can find items which sell for far less than their original selling price and have far higher quality than most digitally based gear sold today.

      My dad always wanted one but they were too expensive. One of our nextdoor neighbors had a TEAC when I was growing up in the 70's/80's. I always loved these. So happy they're coming back!! To this day my dad admires these.

    $3200.00 worth of got to have it. Every man has his price. These RT-909 are getting harder and harder to come by. Most need lots of help from the years of being used. Techmoan's machine needed service and he bought a TEAC X-3 to get him by. The whole reel to reel is expensive make no doubt about it. Has to be the least efficient cost wise of any format in audio today. But it is special. You can't put a price on what it can do. If you ever hear a Master Tape on a 2 track, it will change your life forever. At 15ips is a game changer. Makes records a yawn. I have had too many Reel to Reels. Settled on a TEAC A-7300 and a TEAC X-7. Most likely be where I stay. Unless some one does something silly on an Otari MX-5050B mk.2 2 track. I had one, and it sounded awesome. Beat my TASCAM 52 no end. I should have never let that Otari go. But live and learn. Enjoy your RT-909. Pioneer as a company is just about gone now. Now part of Onkyo which part of VOX these days and also not doing so well. Reel to Reels will always be in my music house.

    I am buying a new home and selling some of my Pioneer gear. I have one of these exact ALL BLACK machines created by the same guy. It is an absolute masterpiece. I have seen other attempts to create a black unit that have silver knobs and switches. But this is a cut above. Please contact me if you want to buy one.

    I'm in the market for one of these. Seen several listed on eBay but not sure if they are in good enough condition even though the sellers all say that.

    I have one (silver) given to me by a friend. Does anyone know of someone who can repair/restore these machines? Please drop a link and let us know, these are fantastic machines. I'd like to transfer a lot of my great lp's to tape and enjoy that great analog sound! Thanks!

      I don't know where you are located or if you still need your machine serviced. If so, search "Big Matt" on RUclips. If you can get it to him. He's definitely your guy. Good luck!

      Yeah, I definitely treated myself with this one. The nice thing is that they are sought after so I could sell it and get most of what I paid for it likely.
      It has been really fun to learn all about and compare different tapes.

      @@TheResistorNetwork I wonder how they accurately control the motor speed. Crystal?

    • @TheResistorNetwork
      @TheResistorNetwork  3 года назад

      Yeah I wonder the same. The entire transport is soft touch and closed loop control so almost certainly the capstan motor is running in constant speed mode while the reels are running in constant torque mode to take up and keep tension on the tape.
      These devices are truly fascinating and I am still learning.
