CBS needs to bring back the NFL Today theme, ASAP. And it's nice to remember what Terry Bradshaw was like before Fox helped him turn into a cartoon character.
Kim Martin I am a lifelong Patriots fan...( I was in 1st grade when the Pats played the Bears in Superbowl XX, I lived in Illinois, hated the Bears as a child because of the hype, latched on to New England, they became my team, supported them throughout the awful 90's...am a TRUE fan, and have REVELED in the glory Brady/Belichick era! And Verne Lundquist may be gone from the SEC on CBS, but he now does part-time work! How sad it is! Well, at least children still enjoy seeing Allie LaForce and Tracy Wolfson share the CBS Sports spotlight together, and ☝️ day, they might call an NFL game together without a sideline reporter!
This exact opening jingle just popped into my head this morning. So glad I found at least this. I'd love to find the full version, though. Brings me back to the days I actually enjoyed football.
Proof that the "Hello Friends" line came later in Nantz's career. 10 years after this, Jim Nantz is the #1 play-by-play guy for the NFL on CBS-AFC version.
And Jim Nantz was about the only member from the NFL on CBS team that didn't leave CBS Sports (they lost the NFC contract to FOX) after the season ended because Nantz still had college basketball and the Masters (he still does both today) to cover.
@DETROIT2MILWAUKEE Actually when CBS came back to the NFL in 1998 they started where they left off, by using this theme. The game your speaking of was the final game for this theme, then went to their current one a week later in Super Bowl XXXV.
This was the final season for CBS' NFC package before losing the rights to FOX for the 1994 season. CBS would eventually get back the rights to the NFL for the 1998 season.
That is, until last Monday, when TNF announced that NBC would join the party next season, making TNF a joint production of NFL Network, CBS and NBC; for NBC and CBS, it's the biggest joint production of the NFL package since the first Super Bowl!
i remember bradshaw being at the games paired up with verne lundquist, when brent musburger, irv cross, dick butkus, and will mcdonough were in the studio for the pre-game/halftime update/postgame...now those were the true glory days of football coverage on cbs...
Trent Green was Gumbel's partner this past season. I also heard him on Westwood One's Monday Night Football with Kevin Harlan when Boomer Esiason can't do the West Coast games.
and to think that not too long before this (4-5 years) the nfl season started a week earlier (the sunday before labour day) and had no byes...meaning that the regular season concluded sometimes a week before christmas, and the first round of the playoffs would already be in the books by new years
Based on what I've seen in this clip, Jim Nantz is the only NFL announcer I've heard of who has done games in both conferences: the NFC in this game, and the AFC today.
Don Criqui, Curt Gowdy, and Al Michaels .Michael were with NBC in 1973 and later CBS in 1975 .he been on Monday night football from 1986-2005 before going to NBC Again in 2006 for Sunday night football
Verne Lundquist did too. He called the AFC on CBS during its first two seasons as the #2 play by play man before switching over to the SEC on CBS in 2000. Of course he did the NFC on CBS for many years.
@bayou432 occurred. Also, more recently, the NFL regular season ran past new Year's for 2004, 2005, 2006 (with the Sunday of Week 17 actually being New Year's Day itself), it happened again for 2009 and will again in 2010.
Dennis Green should have been coach of the year for getting a team with Jim McMahon as their starting QB and Scottie Graham as the starting RB to the playoffs.
Why don't I see any VHS evidence on this, being from 1993? Did you record the game to a Macintosh Centris AV or did you digitize the VHS before putting it onto RUclips?
Woudlnt that BE AWESOME just for one Sunday. Bring back Pat Summerall and John Madden on CBS, have Dick Stockton and Matt Millen on FOX, Dick Enberg, Phill Simms and Paul Maguire on NBC and Al Michaels, Frank Gifford and Dan Dierdorf on ESPN all do one game on the same week on a Sunday/Monday...AWESOMENESS
Most of the players on the team didn't pay their union dues that year- claiming that they were exempt from paying dues under Virginia's right to work law. The players claimed that they were protected by VA's laws since Redskins Park is located there.
Could you imagine the Posthumous Zone theme, the theme the NFL on CBS has today, playing over this NFL Today and game opening clip? Talk about out of place! I think the reasons CBS went with the theme they have today is because they wanted a theme like Fox and wanted to separate themselves from the NFC on CBS version.
Saw something interesting in a post on the 506 forums that I'm a member of. Apparently it was pointed out in a thread on 1993 broadcast crews that had the Vikings lost, assuming that both New Orleans and Philadelphia won (which they did); there would have been a three-way tie for the last NFC playoff spot at 8-8. But, in addition, all three teams also had the same conference record (6-6; which would be the first tiebreaker) and had there been 4 common games, that would have been the next tiebreaker (Green Bay and San Francisco were the only teams all three teams involved played) which would result in the playoff spot being determined by conference games point differential (the Vikings had the best point differential of the three, though all three teams were in negative point differential in conference games)
LOL he mentioned Cletis’s father not the sports casters you can literally leave see the comment by Walker Brown as you can see he mentioned Cletis’s father
He was at CBS first--he also hosted the Lillehammer Winter Olympics and did baseball play-by-play. He moved to NBC when CBS lost the NFC, then returned when they bought the AFC. He did play-by-play first, then switched places with Jim Nantz and did "The NFL Today" for a year, then went back to play-by-play the when James Brown came from Fox.
1993 was final year Nfl on cbs with Nfc era Waga-Tv channel 5 Atlanta Georgia I was sad to lose the contract final game nfc championship game Dallas Cowboys won the game
@domirules28 Sorry to reply so late. The NFL regular season ran past New Year's Day for the 1999 season as well. That's because the regular season started after Labor Day and with the way the calendar worked out, week 17 occurred for Sunday January 2nd and Monday January 3 (the NFL was still playing Monday night football in week 17 back then). The 2001 season also started the week after Labor Day, but the way the calendar worked out, would have concluded before New year's had the attacks not
I think that was because 1993 was the first and only year the NFL gave teams two bye weeks during the regular season. They went back to one bye week the following year because it was messing up the players' practice routines. Of course, 2001 was the year of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which resulted in the NFL postponing their games from the following week until the end of the season. The regular season is also extending past New Year's this year.
@@eyeontv Thank you, I was wondering because as this was between the time the Colts left in 1984 and the time the Browns/Ravens moved here in 1995-1996 I can only imagine the Redskins Games were broadcast to Baltimore's CBS affiliate at the time which was WBAL-TV 11 before CBS went to WJZ-TV 13 in early 1995.
No, there have been a number of Friday games in the NFL, but they're rare nowadays. Since the NFL-AFL merger, there have only been 10 games played on a Friday, including this one. There was the opening game of the 1970 NFL season between the then-St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams, a Week 16 Friday game that was a part of ABC's package from 1983 to 1986, two games on Christmas Eve (1999 and 2004), a Christmas Day game (2009, which is the most recent Friday game to date), and a Chiefs-Dolphins game in October 2005 which was moved from Sunday due to the impending Hurricane Wilma.
Too bad the days of just one or two studio analysts are over. The ways it's done now with four or five makes the whole thing watered down in my opinion.
The night before that NFC East winner take all game, a huge noreaster hit the NYC area, with lots of rain and snow...the storm left a few hours before gametime...history changes if that storm stuck around for the game because aikman could not throw a wet football
@mrkingofkings totally agree. ridiculous they didn't promote him to #1 after they forced Summerall and Madden out, then demote him to 4 or 5 in favor of Kenny Albert years later. I guess that's what happens when your dads are legendary broadcasters----you get the top gigs at each network.
@bayou432 Okay, I understand. Still, being off from school that day, it was sort of strange to have a NFL game on at 3 in the afternoon on a Friday. The Redskins were awful that game, and that season.
Kim Martin I understand what you're saying but back in 2000 and in 2006 (when James Brown returned to CBS) CBS didn't because Greg Gumbel had seniority. Gumbel replaced Enberg in the #2 team in 2006.
Kim Martin I never liked Enberg, he was just dull everytime I listened to him. Now, on the other hand Summerall had a voice that made me want to watch football every time he was on the air.No one could call a game like Summerall and Madden.
@bkahler419 This is back when they had Barry Sanders, and they were good then. It wasn't until Matt Millen became GM that their fortunes took a turn for the worse.
Terry Bradshaw was a clown then and hes still a clown now. Lol times change but most people dont. but thats the Terry we know and love. ps Greg Gumbel looks the same way he did 20 years ago.
CBS needs to bring back the NFL Today theme, ASAP. And it's nice to remember what Terry Bradshaw was like before Fox helped him turn into a cartoon character.
Let’s hope Terry retires after the Super Bowl because FOX has the Super Bowl next year.
I believe you can see Cleatus's father running in the open and on the screen.
Clever placement of the CBS StereoSound graphic.
Everyone has their opinion...and in mine the greatest NFL theme song of all time is at 0:42
Kim Martin Oh definitely the 95-97 NBC theme was and will always be right near the top as well, I agree!
Kim Martin I couldn't agree more lol

+Ryan Hart I wish that when CBS replaces its logo and graphics for SB50 that it also would dump "Posthumus Zone" and bring back these themes.

Kim Martin The NFL and The NBA and The MLB has all been watered down. idk about Hockey because I dont watch Hockey.
The glory days of yester year... Greg and Terry in the studio.. Jim Nantz and Randy Cross at old RFK Stadium..
Their GREATEST theme EVER .. should never have gotten rid of it 🏈🏈
My favorite NFL on CBS theme is the pots and pans
the old skool NFL on CBS theme song sounds like something that be used in the Olympics!!! awesome!!!!
He did the double-switcharoo. He went from CBS to NBC in 1994 and back to CBS in 1998.
Without a doubt, the greatest NFL theme music ever. It puts the Posthumus Zone to shame.
Barry Sanders, Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith and Jim Kelly all pictured in this intro, four of the greats
Proof that the "Hello Friends" line came later in Nantz's career.
10 years after this, Jim Nantz is the #1 play-by-play guy for the NFL on CBS-AFC version.
He should be replaced!!
And Jim Nantz was about the only member from the NFL on CBS team that didn't leave CBS Sports (they lost the NFC contract to FOX) after the season ended because Nantz still had college basketball and the Masters (he still does both today) to cover.
By the way, excellent quality for such an old clip.
CBS needs to bring back this classic NFL Today theme. 0:03
I concur+ the current theme ncluding halftime they have is so awful. 👎.
💯It's such a classic. It's the original theme to the NFL Today. CBS has the Super Bowl this year, hopefully they go back to this theme.
I miss this NFL.
Recorded on professional beta, transferred to DVD for upload.
@DETROIT2MILWAUKEE Actually when CBS came back to the NFL in 1998 they started where they left off, by using this theme. The game your speaking of was the final game for this theme, then went to their current one a week later in Super Bowl XXXV.
This is when football on tv was awesome
@DaveNTwana2K9 Yep, 14-9 the Vikings clinched the last NFC Playoff spot and exited quickly against the New York Giants
I wish CBS would bring back this theme.
Thank you!!
I don’t remember the old song with those graphics.
I do, it debut on Super Bowl XXVI and ended in I believe on 2003

Greg Gumbel ages well, I guess his hair is a little grayer but otherwise, he looks exactly the same
Kim Martin Agreed 1000%. I'd rather have Greg Gumbel in the studio full time but with James Brown back at CBS, Gumbel does NFL play-by-play.
Trent Green was Gumbel's partner this past season. I also heard him on Westwood One's Monday Night Football with Kevin Harlan when Boomer Esiason can't do the West Coast games.
Kim Martin Sweet!!
Kim Martin I'm checking out the '69 Rose Bowl right now. Your playlists are incredible!!
I thought Greg Gumbel wore a wig like Marv Albert
Oh Man!! I completly forgot that Terry Bradshaw was on CBS before he went to FOX.

Jim Lampley has done the same as he has called games for both CBS and NBC.
Kim Martin Gowdy was already mentioned.
This was on my 🎂 in December 1993 on CBS

giving this really cool NFL music a listen right before I go watch today's CBS playoff game with that somewhat overwrought music they use now !!
@DETROIT2MILWAUKEE Yes. The NFL experimented with two bye weeks for each team in the 1993 NFL season. It didn't work.
Dennis Green should have been coach of the year for getting a team with Jim McMahon as their starting QB and Scottie Graham as the starting RB to the playoffs.
I was doing a lot of ecstasy this year.. would come home and watch the games with my dad all ate up.. good times.
Randy Cross - great 49er and awesome announcer!
@bayou432 Except this game here wasn't in the "new year" of 1994--this was a Friday afternoon game, on December 31, 1993.
Why don't I see any VHS evidence on this, being from 1993? Did you record the game to a Macintosh Centris AV or did you digitize the VHS before putting it onto RUclips?
@kcmetro1 Yes, I know, I had replied to another poster who was confused that this was a Friday afternoon game on New Year's eve in 1993.

that opening theme kicks acc can u upload the whole game for this please thanks
With teams changing their uniforms to past ones. CBS should go back and bring this back.
CBS SPORTS #1 BABAY for Life!
This was a rare 3 p.m. ET start that day.

They need to bring back the old NFL Today theme. It’s sooooo much better.
@crawford371 I do too. It was always nice to have 2 nfl games to watch on Saturdays in December.
Nice quality

Do you have the last game of 1993 season, Dallas Cowboys vs. NY Giants game for home field advantage?
I remember this game...this was the odd game that aired on a Friday afternoon. And the last game Richie Petitbon ever coached for Washington.
Holy smokes I was in grade 8 that year!
I miss those late season saturday afternoon NFL games
Final regular season week for the NFC era on CBS.
The circa 2000 arrangement of the NFL on CBS theme was the best sports theme ever.
FACT.

Greg Gumbel on CBS in 1994? I thought he worked for NBC and then moved to CBS in 1998. I'm confused.

@MIBFreakPack You're right-- that's exactly what I meant. And about Kevin Harlan-- I don't think I knew that before.
@ultraback29 Not true. This was a Friday afternoon game---played on New Year's Eve---as New Year's Eve was a Friday in 1993.

very abstract logo for the NFL on CBS at the time.
The Vikings would win that game to get that final wildcard spot and then lose to the Giants that next week.
I believe this was a low scoring affair with Min victorious....13-9 or 14-9.
Had the Vikings lost, who could have claimed the last playoff spot?
