  • Beavers have a unique set of skills - they can transform an ecosystem to store water during droughts and mitigate flooding. Learn how they’ve helped the National Trust team over the past four years on the Holnicote Estate in Somerset.
Beavers create deep pools and make dams as part of their habitat, so that they can access food and hide from predators. These pools and dams then help to mitigate the effects of extreme weather events such as flooding and drought - which are happening more frequently due to climate change. They slow the flow of water which helps to reduce flooding and retain water in the land during periods of drought.
Meet project manager, Ben Eardley and ranger, George Layton who talk about the benefits of introducing the beaver colony to the area. You’ll also hear from some of the local community about how the beavers have helped the environment, and how their techniques can be used to help farmers.
This project is funded by the Government's Species Survival Fund. The fund was developed by Defra and its Arm's-Length Bodies. It is being delivered by The National Lottery Heritage Fund in partnership with Natural England and the Environment Agency.
A minimum of £25,000 in sales from childrenswear brand, Frugi, and their National Trust Busy Beavers Collection, has helped to deliver ongoing conservation support for the family of beavers reintroduced at the Holnicote Estate.

Such beautiful footage of the beavers and really interesting film. Is the plan to extend their reintroduction to more areas too?

Thanks for your support! There are no plans in place to introduce beavers elsewhere at this stage but it's certainly possible we will do more as part of our efforts to combat the climate crisis.

Great, but "They've just taken the water and spread it all across the site". Were they using buckets, or as I've been led to belive, built dams?

"Did you know that the National Trust IS using beavers", not "the National Trust ARE using beavers". The National Trust is one single thing, not many things. I'm surprised that the National Trust allows such illiteracy.
