I'm very happy they finally used the historical argument as no one seems to use it. i.e. How Ussher's Chronology mandates that the whole of the ancient world was built by 8 guys in 100 years. It's stupid, and it was the first argument that convinced me when I was 5 years old.

In regards to the first caller, and his population estimations, he couldn't be more wrong. First, the Earth is billions of years old, but the species of man is about 200,000. Secondly, there have been several cataclysms that almost wiped out our species. All I can say is, Shave and sterilize. Repeat if necessary. Lol.

That last guy doesn't know what "dialogue" generally means. It is people with different perspectives discussing an issue. Thus, an "open dialogue" MEANS that the atheist will attack the religious position, and vice versa. That is exactly what happens on the show. He's just butthurt because the Christian side never makes a convincing argument, so the atheists never say, "Yeah, you're right - I never considered that before".

About caller Sam: Dating volcanic rock is tricky and can easily give a bad date if you don't get it from a deep enough source. It will only date the current eruption IF the rock was fully turned into Magma during the eruption. Surface rocks are commonly erupted last and might have survived the last eruption event and thus would give a much older date. This is commonly known and thus is only missed if your very inexperienced OR you are willing to make a mistake.

The first caller reminds me of a caught fish; flapping around desperately, with absolutely no chance of making anything approaching progress.
Has anyone else noticed that RUclips clips posted by theists often have the comments disabled? They're scared of dissension, that their dwindling flock might read them and start to question their own beliefs once they've been confronted with reasoned argument and common sense.
I think mankind is developing beyond the need for religion. Thankfully!

character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of

But those guys do these shows in a regular basis. Not only that, but blog, radio show, mails, etc. The guy was throwing pretty much all standard creationist crap that he was reading from a creationist website. A radiometric wrong dating should have a standard reply after years answering the same thing. Instead they kept saying "no it is not", like if this is an answer.

@luke8670 I think the caller is referring to Isaiah 40:22, where it mentions the 'circle' of the earth, which is a flat shape, not a sphere as we know the earth is, it's a misquote. He seems desperate to prove the bible has revealed science, in fact it runs contrary to known science. I agree that it would be hard to see the curvature of the earth from great heights, shame Matt wasn't on the show for that question...

  • @cwpappas

But the truly funny thing about the kid talking about the Mount Etna rock is that he says that carbon dating showed that it was 21,000 year old but its actual age is 25,000,000 years. The kid thinks the Earth was created 6,000 years ago... in conflict with his own data on the rock's actual age! I'm surprised Jenn or Russel didn't catch that.

@AntitheistPOV that is my point - people who suggest we would lose these in a world without religion, as if they are contingent on a faith-based worldview, are being ridiculous. However, because these ideas have been historically associated with religion it is necessary to explain to the religious that we are not 'borrowing' christian values - as some apologists would like to claim.

Yes, humanity has been perfectly designed for this world and life is perfectly matched for earth. The problem with this is the changes we make to our environment make it appear perfect for us, because we designed it that way. The earth is perfectly designed for humans, because we're changing it to make it that way (and in some cases, destruction following in our path).

I don't know if there's any argument that gets under my skin more than the "open mind" argument that Spence brought up.
The state of my mind, whether it be opened or closed, has no bearing on what is real. Why can't they get that? I mean, if I'm closed minded against gravity, will I shoot off into space?
"Yes, I am closed minded towards your backwards way of thinking, and GODDAMMIT, I am proud to be closed minded of that. Now, go away!"

    • @n.presley917

mostly i think the root of that is that they have never examined certainty, i.e. their experience of certainty and what it actually means (and doesn't mean). certainty is an emotion that "people of faith" are, IMO, addicted to nurturing, preserving, reinforcing, etc. feeling certain about something/anything ISN'T knowing, but they prefer to skip over that fact because certainty is a satisfying feeling. (and in the case of theism/afterlife, because so much within the model of sin, salvation, eternal life, etc. hinges on believing non-evident, unprovable, arguably unfalsifiable things)

To expand on the coment that population growth was relatievly flat for millions of years.
Taking a look at growth patterns we find that there is a direct link between Population Growth and food supplies. The Creationist argument about population rates fails to take into account that before 10,000 B.C.E. here was no agriculture as a food source.

If you have food for 2M people, and only have a population of 1M, then the population will double very quickly. We have the number of people on this planet today not because people breed at a certain rate, we have a number of people on this planet because our FOOD SUPPLY has increased at a certain rate.

When will people realise that using a philosophical concept/ political or cultural idea from a relgion is not the same as accepting the faith as a whole -
a good legal system should include 'thou shalt not kill/steal' and a good moral system could include 'do unto others...'. But some muslim ideas are also good too - community solidarity, yearly charitable donations etc. Some buddhist meditation techniques are useful.
