HEΛRTS OF SPΛCE prank or not, his logic was about as sound as every serious caller. They all call in with some argument, which they feel uses rationality to stump the host's rationality. Usually, you can tell that they feel that their argument is some profound epiphany, when really, it's been heard a million times, like Pascal's wager, attempts to reverse burden of proof, or arguing, "how do you know your rationality isn't fallible, without faith?". When these arguments fail they'll either be too confused to realize it, or they'll argue in circles for a bit. When they finally give up their argument, they either resort to, "I know, because the bible tells me so.", or, "I know, because I've had a personal revelation from god." That's literally how almost every Christian argument I've heard has ended, and I've watched way too many of these episodes. On the rare occasion that the host asks them what their personal revelation from god was, it
HEΛRTS OF SPΛCE (accidentally bumped the send button early) Their personal revelation is usually something unremarkable. One I remember was a lady saying she didn't believe in god, but she was sick, and, in an act of desperation, turned to prayer. Then, over the course of several years, she got better. It's a miracle! Another caller said her personal sign from god happened when she was in her basement. She was moving a shelf, and a bible, which her mother or grandmother had given her, fell out from behind the shelf. She said it was a miracle and sign from god, because she has no idea what compelled her to move the shelf, and she hadn't seen that bible for many years. Anyway, my point is, at least this prank caller gets straight to the point of saying, "It's in the bible, so it must be true." He sounds no dumber than many of the callers who argue against evolution, or those who try to use the bits and pieces of the bible that they memorized specifically for the show, only to be stomped by Matt's bible knowledge

My grandpa died from an allergic reaction to a vaccine (back in the early 80s or mid 70s, before I was born) and not only that, I fall in the autism spectrum and have been vaccinated....so what? Vaccines have saved countless lives and there is no causation/correlation link to me being in the spectrum, as for my gramps? Well it sucks, I would really have liked to have known him, but it was an unfortunate-yet-rare occurrence. Being mad at a vaccines won't bring him back.
Joe Cannabyte That sucks hard... Vaccine allergy is really rare. I'm allergic to penicillin, but I thankfully just get hives and itchyness. It's a huge bitch finding other antibiotics.
my 12 year old daughter is severely autistic. She doesn't speak or has never used the toilet. I do suspect the shots have something to do with it because I hear the same story over and over from other parents at her school as with her that she started developing at a normal age and even talking but everything stopped around 2 years old right after getting the shots you get as a young child. I suspect that maybe because it saves so many lives and enormous amount of lawsuits that would follow that maybe they hide it but I actually feel the same way as you when I think of all the people that do not die every year from getting them shots I guess you have to look at the greater good

Sorry, as a confirmed Catholic, I can tell you that it is the parent's decision. I went through the motions, and answered all the priest's questions as I had been taught to, and never questioned that I should succeed in being confirmed because my parents wanted that. The church makes a pretense of caring about whether your acceptance is your own choice, but it is bullshit.
I type this in 2024, but it’s just as valid. As a confirmed Spanish Catholic who left religion right after confirmation, I can tell that in our schools all the students that reached the age of 14 were confirmed to follow the customs. No need for interrogations or parent’s permission. Of course, that happened in 1975, the last year of Franco’s dictatorship, and only those that really wish to be confirmed do so these days.
Around 29:40 I would have pointed out that there's no such thing as 'violation' of Occam's Razor. It's a probabilistic tool, not even a descriptive one. Occam's Razor isn't a law of anything, it simply states that the most elegant and naturally uncomplicated (often erroneously changed to 'simple') hypothesis to explain something is generally worth examination first, as it has the best chance of containing some portion of the truth or at least will provide the greatest quantity of useful data for updating the potential answer space if it turns out to be entirely false. Occam's Razor is a tool for promoting untested hypothesis on the basis of possibility drawn from prior knowledge and evidence, it has absolutely no ruling power over whether a known quantity is or is not 'in line' with it. So yeah, Occam's Razor is a tool that you can either use or not use, but you can't 'violate' it as if it was a law.

May I just say that if these "spiritual" people are telling you that reason is subjective and can't be trusted... How do you think they came to this conclusion? They used reason. It's like putting a hole in your own boat. Or cutting off the branch you're sitting on.
Although I have never believed in a god I have been forced to go through a church system. Including certain ceremonies such as the confirmation which my family decided for me. I went to classes but never met with a priest that judged 'whether I would truly commit to the faith' or not. Rather, they just accepted anyone (everyone) in the class who could remember what was taught and their lines during the ceremony. I, personally, never submitted to this. Rather, it was a choice forced upon me which I continuously tried to get out of, up until the point of the actual ceremony. My family was aware that I never held their beliefs, that I've disagreed with them since they were introduced to me and often disputed them with other religions I would read about, and tried to force me on the path of their religion anyway. So there are some situations where it is 'the choice of the parent'.
@JuanchoMan "Mark" has a very distinct voice/speech pattern that always give him away no matter what alias he uses. To me Rob sounds nothing like him - John from Costa Mesa, the first caller, however, i'm 99% sure is "Mark" and it seems Matt suspects so as well :)

@rhubis right, the only thing you learn from correlation, is that there MAY be some common factor influencing both variables. In the case of the iron production and birth rates they were probably both affected by global economic changes.
Freshly squeezed from the D -Weasel! LOL LOL LOL! Too funny! LOVE IT. I went through the same thing here as Jen, only here we call em Anglicans not Episcopalians. around the 28 min mark, jimmy carr summed it up extremely well with something like 'why cant jesus find me? he's omniscient, im on telly how hard can it be?'
"Poe's Law is an axiom suggesting that it's difficult, if not impossible, to distinguish between parodies of religious or other fundamentalism and its genuine proponents, since they both seem equally insane."
Well sure it's genetic, but having a child with an autoimmune disease that's genetic doesn't ensure passing on that disease. For instance, my family on my father's side has a history of diabetes type 1, but I don't have it. Insulin allows those who suffer from Type 1 diabetes to live more comfortable lives. so I must ask...what's the problem?
@kotoroshinoto A good example is US pig iron production and UK birth rates between 1875-1920, the two correlated almost perfectly with a coefficient of -0.98. Did this mean that the pig iron production in the UK was actually doing something to the US birth rates? No.
Evidence of insulin causing diabetes mellitus is...what now? Seems kind of chronologically erroneous, when the usage of insulin came AFTER diabetes mellitus was a thing...
@Ravinian Look on Wiki "smallpox" > "Post-eradication". I haven't checked Wiki's sources if that's what you're asking. What I surely know, my PCs are running smallpox research among other things on the grid computing project I'm participating.
I like how at the end of quite a few shows Matt or someone else is like "Okay, we have time for one more caller, now be quick about it" Caller responds with "Got it, I just have a quick question. But... btw (rambles away what time is left spouting inconsequential information) and here's my question (as the credits are nearly over)"
About the First Amendment... Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. It only applies to the government making laws against these things. It has nothing to do with someone calling you an idiot for saying idiotic things.
I was under the impression that almonds were notable for cyanide content, not arsenic. True that the preservatives, at those levels are virtually harmless. Though some are now saying that vaccines can cause an immune over-reaction in some cases, especially if multiple vaccines are taken in a short time frame.
@vegetta00 during the London riots back in August, two teenagers started Facebook groups telling people to gaher at a time and place to go and loot and destroy as a group. Nobody showed up, those two boys got 4 years behind bars.
I might have worded that in a confusing manner; The incidence of autoimmune type I diabetes mellitus has increased because it is genetic, and since insulin has become available, it has allowed people that have the genetic predisposition to have children; previously, the complications of the diabetes reduced reproductive fitness of the individuals who had type I and therefore they did not have as many children.
Self Flagellation is a component of many religions. The Solipsist would probably just think that they are strengthening their 'faith'/ belief through pain.
@xxFortunadoxx Actually, that example does not disconfirm my claim. For it is possible though undesirable and unlikely for an individual NOT to obey despite the threat of and use of violence against them. That being said, we can understand and empathize with individuals who are coerced with violence into committing violence. A threat of violence is not 'words alone' for the will to use that violence is presented in the words and thus creates a violent, amoral situation/environment.
@chrisx2k6 i didnt say anything about profileing but i find that profileing is no more then making assumtions about someone based on nothing more than past experiences and their phisical apperance
I have to disagree with Jen about confirmation. I was confirmed as a Catholic at 12, as were all my Catholic friends - it was not really our decision, and I never saw a priest decide any kid was not ready. It is just one more religious ritual you are forced to go through. You are told it's your choice, but I would love to see what happens to the kid who says no. Don't kid yourself, maybe YOU had a choice, but for the most part the idea that it is a free choice is just another religious lie.
@Sines314 I think Matt is more saying when he believes no one is that stupid he is more trying to say that no one can say that and not on some level be aware of there own hypocrisy. Which leads back to him suspecting a crank call and the relevance that other watchers claim to recognise the caller from past calls.
@xxFortunadoxx (Cont`d) Furthermore, the burden of proof lies in the positive statement. How am I liable for the actions taken by another if I myself took no action but rather merely spoke/wrote words? Is it possible to hold someone liable if they are dead, and what if my words were in writing? Can you hold a book liable?
Sometimes I laugh harder watching this show than I do when I watch my favorite comedians. I know that some of these people might be prank callers, but I know people who actually think like these fake, or maybe real, fundies. There's really no way to tell if they're faking because of the actual idiots who think this way. And there are so many of them..
@JesterAzazel That's the problem with arguing with theists, you can completely destroy them in the argument but at the end of it they pull the "It was Magic"/"We can't understand God"/"I just know he exists because I feel it" card to which there's no real way to argue against.
Actually mercury is only put in certain vaccines which carry multiple vaccinations that you have to opt-in for. We do not give those ones to children ever.
LOL I went through the "I can only prove I exist" phase but came to the conclusion that Matt did; I doesn't matter, I still have to act at every moment that there is an objective reality so why not just go with it?
@LavLTC Once a year. Primarily given to the elderly and children. Those in the healthcare industry are 'strongly' encouraged to get them. For most others, it's voluntary. But at least in the midwest, it's one time per year and the strain given is based off of what other countries are experiencing. I believe the US looks at what Japan experiences and engineers the flu shot accordingly.
@Arkesus So? What do laws imposed by a few people in power have to do with philosophy? I hold the position that those 2 individuals should NOT have been met with violence (arrest/prison) for posting whatever on facebook. In fact, what does that have to do with anything? I never said that you couldn`t get in trouble for speaking/writing. I said that responsibility lies on those who take action.
@Zentz29 Did the person who told someone else to commit murder play a part in someone`s demise? Yes. But if they themselves did not take direct action against that person and were not willing to commit the murder themselves then that person is ultimately harmless and I cannot justify taking action against them. Of course I would shun them and inform others to encourage them to do the same.
Wow, I dunno how they kept track of what Julian was saying. He seems very intelligent, but something about his cadence (which I assume is due to his home language) just made it really had to follow for me. About 3-4 sentences in I felt like I'd completely lost what he was talking about.
@TheMightyPatapon Where did I object to vaccinations in any general sense? Matt said we could avoid what he called suffering from chicken pox. The problem becomes whether not there is a danger to not being vaccinated against chicken pox, which is an individual decision to be made and there is no danger to most children in the appropriate age range, otherwise, a week off of school and some Calamine Lotion is not dangerous.
@Zentz29 Whether or not people are held accountable for their speech is irrelevant to this discussion. I never claimed people aren`t held accountable. I said they shouldnt be held accountable. You are ultimately responsible for yourself. You are responsible for your emotions/feelings and how you react to or deal with them. Even if someone evokes emotions from you, even if they present you with false information it is your choice how you react and what you believe and investigate as a result.
Wow...he made the laws so people would know the things the laws say are wrong? I admit, I've never heard that particular argument before. I had to listen twice before I could believe it.
I didn't get chickenpox until I was 31 (in 2004). It was the week of New Years. Fortunately, I got over it in 5 days even while continuing to work. I'm pretty sure I got it from equipment (computer) handled by a customer.
@xxFortunadoxx But in this case, the person is not holding a gun or using the threat of violence. They cannot be held liable for spreading the misinformation. It is the responsibility of individuals to seek out the legitimate medical experts and become informed to make an informed decision. Whether or not they can be held legally responsible is irrelevant. I said they SHOULDN`T be held liable for their their words/writing. They are NOT forcing or threatening to use force on others.
There exists no limit to freedom of speech. Even if I die, my words may remain in writing. You cannot hold someone responsible for their words that others act upon same as you cannot hold a book responsible. It would serve no purpose even if your purpose is censorship. "Books won't stay banned. They won't burn. Ideas won't go to jail. In the long run of history, the censor and the inquisitor have always lost. The only weapon against bad ideas is better ideas." - Alfred Griswold
- I am a thesis christian - Spell it - T-A-T-I-S-E-T - Theist? - Yes - What does that mean? - That i believe in God - Do you think there are christians who aren't theists? - There are some christians that are thesis.
@madjimms Isn't that what happens when you get a vaccination? You are injected with a smaller less harmful dose of the disease and build immunity. Would you like to get typhoid or polio and then fight it off? Those are extreme examples, but the diseases we vaccinate our children for, can be deadly or crippling. Why take the risk?
The rise in severe diabetes mellitus that is type I autoimmune type, which has proliferated throughout the population as insulin has become widely available. As one example...
HEΛRTS OF SPΛCE I disagree. I would probably not have given him the kid's name at all. It had no relevance to the conversation. Plus, if my name and city are on display, I don't want anyone adding 2+2 and coming up with me and my kid.
Armadyl Someone who masquerades as a fundamentalist. It is nearly impossible to tell if someone is _actually_ a poe, because of how ridiculous most fundamentalist beliefs are.
@Silentsam7532 I never got a flu shot. It's just something most normal people don't do where I come from. Maybe because the flu rarely ever kills anyone around here...
@Silentsam7532 I think you misunderstood- I actually get the full blown flu. I went to the doctor, and even he was confused. Asked if I had gotten the shot as he thought I hadn't taken it. I understand how vaccinations work, and while I agree people should take them, I'm not sure if I support the flu vac being mandatory in schools. Simply because I myself do get very sick from the thing. (achs, pains, vomiting, ect. not the common cold, I can assure you that.)
I think a debate on the topic "Is morality found in the bible" as it would be easy for an atheist to argue against whilst Christians would be readily wanting to defend it.

Look on Wiki "smallpox" > "Post-eradication". I haven't checked Wiki's sources if that's what you're asking.
What I surely know, my PCs are running smallpox research among other things on the grid computing project I'm participating.
@Second Caller
"violation of ockham's razor"
Occam's Razor is a general guideline, not a rule. Misapplying it and does not make you look smart.
I like how at the end of quite a few shows Matt or someone else is like "Okay, we have time for one more caller, now be quick about it" Caller responds with "Got it, I just have a quick question. But... btw (rambles away what time is left spouting inconsequential information) and here's my question (as the credits are nearly over)"
Is that FSM I see in the center of the table?
@vegetta00 "It is not logical to hold one responsible for the actions of another"
Charles Manson should not be in jail?
So the one I didn't think was a prank call gets cut off. The call I knew was a prank call got a long time... hmm.
@chrisx2k6 where do you get your information on racial dif on a mental level?
I was under the impression that almonds were notable for cyanide content, not arsenic.
True that the preservatives, at those levels are virtually harmless. Though some are now saying that vaccines can cause an immune over-reaction in some cases, especially if multiple vaccines are taken in a short time frame.
"It don't care" - Matt Dillahunty. I love you guys! Thank you much for your show
Jen holding in a laugh at about 37:00 is soooooo funny !!
@vegetta00 during the London riots back in August, two teenagers started Facebook groups telling people to gaher at a time and place to go and loot and destroy as a group. Nobody showed up, those two boys got 4 years behind bars.
So I'm wondering what your point is in all of this. Are you saying anyone with any sort of genetic disease shouldn't be allowed to reproduce?
I don't hear about Flu shots in Denmark much, do they talk about some super flu or old people?
Oh my, that guy from Shreveport was HILARIOUS.
Jen's face is a picture during that call at 34:52. So funny! :)
@Zentz29 I`m not familiar with the facts surrounding the Manson case.
rob from from atlanta was really "mark from austin stone church"
I might have worded that in a confusing manner; The incidence of autoimmune type I diabetes mellitus has increased because it is genetic, and since insulin has become available, it has allowed people that have the genetic predisposition to have children; previously, the complications of the diabetes reduced reproductive fitness of the individuals who had type I and therefore they did not have as many children.
45:00
What's the name Matt mentions at 45:00?
"...Except for maybe ???"
Can anyone please tell me?
Thanks in advance.
Dennet, Daniel Dennet :p sorry it took so long for someone to get to ya!
Self Flagellation is a component of many religions. The Solipsist would probably just think that they are strengthening their 'faith'/ belief through pain.
I don't think the second caller took a breath.
Wakefield, yes. He was stricken from the record in the UK; basically lost his license to practice medicine.
Roderick: I'm a thesis.
Me: So whats your statement?
@Sines314
I think Matt is more saying when he believes no one is that stupid he is more trying to say that no one can say that and not on some level be aware of there own hypocrisy.
@Discipol I concur.
Hahaha the elusive Deeweavel (14:26) for your vitamin D dosage, good stuff Matt :D
What the guy at 55:00 or so is describing sounds like the sort of case NonStampCollector puts forward.
That prank call was hilarious.
@AdairZionist Mark can simply have one if his friends initiate the call with another voice, then he can take the phone, or call via skype
Julian from dusseldorf is Mark from stone-church.
Anybody catch that belch?
There exists no limit to freedom of speech. Even if I die, my words may remain in writing. You cannot hold someone responsible for their words that others act upon same as you cannot hold a book responsible. It would serve no purpose even if your purpose is censorship. "Books won't stay banned. They won't burn. Ideas won't go to jail. In the long run of history, the censor and the inquisitor have always lost. The only weapon against bad ideas is better ideas." - Alfred Griswold
- I am a thesis christian
- Spell it
- T-A-T-I-S-E-T
- Theist?
- Yes
- What does that mean?
- That i believe in God
- Do you think there are christians who aren't theists?
- There are some christians that are thesis.
@madjimms Isn't that what happens when you get a vaccination? You are injected with a smaller less harmful dose of the disease and build immunity. Would you like to get typhoid or polio and then fight it off?
Those are extreme examples, but the diseases we vaccinate our children for, can be deadly or crippling. Why take the risk?
The rise in severe diabetes mellitus that is type I autoimmune type, which has proliferated throughout the population as insulin has become widely available. As one example...
That first caller John is a poe: he's also Matt from Oslo.
He just rambled all of the stereotypes: "he's too young", "it's just a phase"...
Skyzard Charim He also hesitated when Matt asked what his son's name was. That was a dead giveaway.
HEΛRTS OF SPΛCE I disagree. I would probably not have given him the kid's name at all. It had no relevance to the conversation. Plus, if my name and city are on display, I don't want anyone adding 2+2 and coming up with me and my kid.
John Stover Sure, that's certainly a possibility, but let's be honest here, John was very likely a poe for plenty of reasons.
Skyzard Charim What is a poe?
Armadyl Someone who masquerades as a fundamentalist. It is nearly impossible to tell if someone is _actually_ a poe, because of how ridiculous most fundamentalist beliefs are.
that was the austin stone guy was it
@Silentsam7532 I never got a flu shot.
I don't know how you guys put up with these callers.
@juuonse I've been doing that at least a dozen times throughout each show, lately. They're really becoming painful.
Some day people will look back at this time in history with regret and disgust hopefully.
I think a debate on the topic "Is morality found in the bible" as it would be easy for an atheist to argue against whilst Christians would be readily wanting to defend it.
Arsenic can be a performance enhancing drug whats your point.
