I’ve been a bass player for a long time, and recently got a kit to just dive deeper into rhythm and groove. So this is my first time really digging deep into drum transcription. I always knew Max Roach was the place to start.
I love the way you decluttered the written transcription by just clarifying the hi hat/BD/ride would all just be keeping time. Because the melodic genius flowing around the rest of the kit is so clear and helpful to understand the art these solos.
    We’ll done!

Hi there, I'm really appriciate your playing! Thanks for sharing. I just started checking that solo as well. And I was asking myself, at many points why did you choose to play singles instead of sixstroke Rolls (ParaDiddleDiddle). for example: Bar (in you're scores) 2, 9-10, 22-25. I came to conclusion that Roach is playing at many of the 16th rolls (RLRRLL). What do you think?
    And thanks again for sharing!

Hello ! That's a deep question... I've been struggling with for a long time : what rudiment do I hear, what rudiment I will use to get the same feeling, and do I write it on the score.
I have listen this reccord many many times, for pleasure, for transcription, and while playing on it. It's true that on the bars you mention, sixstroke roll would be perfect, it fits with the small accent on the first stroke. And it's true that Roach use it in many solos. But, after close listening, I have the feeling that all the strokes are almost the same (in terms of power), there is a lot of space between each stroke, and so I think this he played with single stroke. Maybe I'm wrong ;) Anyway it feels better for me playing that way, I feel more close to Roach interpretation.
But, we don't have the same ears, and I think that in the end there is no wrong answer to that question. Both solution have their credits, this one worked for me, but it's just a personnal opinion and feeling. That's why I usualy dont put the rudiment I use in my score, cause I know that some of you will be more relax with different rudiments than the one I'm use to play.
But thank's for asking, I will be glad to here your version of this solo one day with your way of playing it !

@@manuelcarromero-anotherdru4128 Thanks for you're thoughts. :) that makes sence for me
... yes: it's most important to get as close as possible to the sound and make the music to you're own.
