It takes a certain person to show the missed shot. You could have easily edited that out and we wouldn't have had the benefit of your learning and experience. Thanks Thomas!
Darren Smith Thanks for seeing it that way Darren.
I agree
Absolutely brilliant footage Thomas! Well done mate...
Thanks for that Dan. It was good fun filming these deer.
Your video production skill is increasing my friend and what a nice hunt.
Thanks again
Thanks for that. Yes it has been nice to learn some new skills and capturing some new angles. Not sure what this year will bring, but hopefully I will get better at something.
I like your style. Thank you Thomas. Well done.
Thanks for that Scott. I will eventually put out some winter hunting films as well, they should be fairly exotic for many (skis and rifle). Difficult to work with the cameras, but I think I caught the spirit of it.
Good video Thomas! I like that 300 Norma mag.
Thanks for that Jay. Yes, the 300NM really hammers and it does have its' use!
Great Video as always Thomas! 👍
Thanks for that!
Perfect, amazing and ...do you believe that when I received the notification of “ a new Thlr video in RUclips “,I have to stop whatever I do to see it😊🤣. Keep going like this thomas. Arggggggggggg!!!!!!!🤔😱😱
Juan jose Ermakimix Thanks, fortunately I break your daily routine only once a month now.
You live in such an amazing place. Great shooting!!!
playdoh1975 I wouldn't mind living here, but I'm only visiting. It's the Highlands in Scotland.
Awesome video mate ! And great shooting Thor’s Hammer absolutely 👍👍👍
My friend you met at the range has ordered his”Thor’s Hammer” along with the US military I hear!
The guy with the cool Landrover? I could certainy shoot and probably will put it to good use. Very easy to shoot, but I will not be bringing it back.
THLR.NO yeah that’s him... going to put a gong out at a mile for him... not much good to me though 😂
Your video mic is a bit too good at stopping the wind noise there was a 4-6 mph full value wind coming from the right hand side as I recall 😉
Thomas, kind of unrelated to the video but i just wanted to say that you were the inspiration behind my 6.5 Grendel bolt gun project. And it has worked out fantastic for me. I used a Howa Mini Action and went from there. Ive taken it out to 1000yds with relative ease. Thanks for all the great content. Greetings from California.
Nice to hear you are enjoying your Grendel, it has by far been one of my favorite projects (my 22 Hornet was just as nice). It's just such a mild, precise and adequate cartridge and very good with the carcasses. What powder/ bullet did you end up using? You are aware of the dedicated 65Grendel.com forum?
It is definitely a lot of fun to shoot. Currently i am using, 28.7gr of H335 pushing a sierra matchking at 2564fps. I will be trying Lapua Scenar 123gr next with 8208. And yes i am on the Grendel forum.
The new Federal .224 Valkyrie will be a culling masterpiece for roe, fallow, goats, etc. especially in an accurate semi-auto, IF the AR15 fears allow
Another good video and I see from the comments that some people do not understand how quickly things change when trying to take multiple animals with them moving etc. From being there and having done a lot of it I think you made the right call on all the shots. The 300 NM is definitely a lot of cartridge for this and there will be significant meat damage in the shoulder areas. When I am meat culling I use a smaller caliber (6.5) and either head/neck shoot or put one behind the shoulder which results in a clean carcass but not the same hammered drop shot.
I know very well where you come from and do agree, but I would not be as strong worded. New Zealand hunters are uniquely skilled in the western world and they routinely undertake hunting trips most consider lifetime adventures or proper hunting expeditions. Your hunting culture also has a distinct lack of social class divide compared to many European countries. I have perceived all of the comments so far as fair and friendly, well anchored in their best practice. I agree with both them and you. If this trip had been for myself, I would have felt a little cheated if I was unable to "work more" for the experience but as it was it was more a matter of efficiency and not having to spend another day trying to get those deer into the larder.
I agree also and when culling the focus is on time and efficiency with harvesting animals. I will even shoot from the buggy or truck if possible when culling as the goals are to take animals close to good access for recovery and in the least time possible. Different focus when actually trophy hunting and experiencing the mountains etc.
NADS IQ haha! I hope you enjoyed the show! I don’t know who is better eh! I just do what I enjoy best! If you don’t enjoy what you do then do something else!!
Absolutely love the videos, got hooked with the 500m proficiency videos and have been watching non-stop. WELL DONE! Subscribed !!
Thanks for that Ron, hope you get something useful out of it! Please remember that bingewatching is unhealthy! :D
THLR.NO very true! I end up watching while I am on the computer working. I have a savage 110 BA in 338LM that I am going to start using your training methods with. I am curious, when you reload your 338 what are you using? I use 285 gr hornady eld- x with 87.4 gr of H1000, cci large caliber primer. COAL is 3.665”. Grouping 3/8” at 100yrds. Keep up the great videos.
It's been years since I reloaded the 338LM, I was using Vitahouri N570 at the time and followed their online reloading manual 100%.
Great powder and it also works very well to push heavy bullets fast in the 300 Win Mag.
Great video Thomas 👍
Thanks for that, hope things are going well in Australia. Quite cold and windy here now.
That 6.5x55 is such a great allrounder you can load it dopey for light projectile or flat out for the big projectiles and it still shoots straight love it. I have owned 308, 22/250, 30 06 but between recoil ballistics and just knowing what each reload will do in the 6.5x55 it like old faithful. I know it's just that's what I see you use in the Blazer I have 3 rifles now 22lr 223 6.5x55 and that will kill a lot of stuff.😃😃
Very sensible choices Colin, especially if availability and cost is factored in. In Norway, due shooting sports, the pricepoint and thus default choice is 6,5x55. At least I cannot justify why I should use anything else these days, as you say it has a very good balance point between recoil/ballistics/knockdown.
Great video Thomas, what's the main difference betweed 300 norma and 300 win mag? does it give you a little bit more speed?
I would say the ability to shoot the heaviest 30 bullets at good speed. Unless you intend to shoot 210gr and up, I don't really see what the big deal is over an ordinary 300 WM.
Have you ever needed the illuminated reticle in the Minox for hunting deer in Scotland?
Yes. I find an illuminated center dot/cross very useful for shooting deer at first/last light. I used it a lot more for shooting roe than I have for reds.
Fantastic video and shooting 👍👍💪
It was nice capturing the film of the deer, but I wasn't too happy with my shooting here. Almost made a shit shot trying to avoid the shoulder/ meat damage and I did miss deer number 3 on the first shot. Not exactly stellar, but at least my mistakes can be lessons for others. Don't get too cocky, you'll always fail at some stage.
I think the 220gr eld-x have worked better
What is the felt recoil like to you..?
It's a long push
Impact was a little bit back on the first one? Still effective obviously, died where it fell. Have you ever recovered an ELD projectile to see it's terminal performance?
Yes absolutely. I wanted to stay off the shoulder on the calf and took it a little too far in the lung. No the ELD has not been recovered and the 30 has definitively been more brutal than the 6,5mm. Both X and M seems to be to soft and be really hard on the game when the bones are hit. I find it a bit too much.
Hi Thomas, I like your jacket! Can you tell me what model this is?
LRSobo It's the Sitka Flash windstopper. Very nice BUT ridiculously short as it stops above my belt. I had to add some fabric to get any use out of it.
As always 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍⚒
Many thanks!
I still don't get the 300 NM. I launch 225gr ELD Ms at 2970fps out of a 300 Win Mag which will get me to 2000yds and beyond. I'm not near max loads either at 75grs of H1000. I can push it past 3000fps if I wanted to but for what I built it for (a Mile and 2000yds) 2900fps is more than enough. What really is the benefit of the 300 NM?? How much powder does it take to send 225grs at 3000 fps with it? The 300 NM is like the 30 Nosler, I just don't get it..I must be missing something.
It is a byproduct of the 338 Norma medium machinegun project?
Great video! What kind of rail-mount do you use on your R93?
Thanks for your help!
Tobias Schönmehl Thanks. I use Contessa but would also look at Innomount if buying again. My mounting solution is unneccessarily heavy and a result of piecing together what I had lying around.
THLR.NO Thanks for the quick reply. Thats funny. I use Innomount quickmount but want to get something to be able to change scopes between different Systems. I might go for a Innomount rail as Contessa is hard to get in germany.
Innomount also has fairly lightweight picatinny rails for Blaser systems. I like Innomount very much I just don't own it as it wasn't available at the time I purchased.
Yes I´ll most likely go for that. Keep up the good work!
How do you like the Eberlestock pack?
I don't. I find it primitive, heavy for size and poor material choice. But it is the only backpack I can find with that kind of scabbard which need for my camera tripods. There is a lot of much better backpacks at the same price point, I cannot recommend my Eberlestock.
BLASER R8 - Nice day - nice hunt indeed
Yes this was a good day (most days hunting are). Not so much hunting this season I'm afraid, but I will be able to put together some hunting films.
Nice shooting ! What bullet and distance ?
This was the Hornady ELD M 225gr bullet. I found it a little too destructive and will not be using it.
How do you like the Kuiu glowes, I belive that I read that you also have some nerve damage/loss of feel in your fingers/hands. I have used them extensivly with a pair of Norröna glowes that can be worn together or separate. Best regards Chris
The Kuiu Guide was a quite primitive glove and not something I'd recommend. The Kuiu attack is a much nicer glove, snug fit and protects the hand well. I'd like to see it without some of the fabric/seams around the wrist as it doesn't seem to do anything but hold more water and make the glove slower on/off. All in all I'm happy with the glove and certainly prefer it over the Mechanix.
Thanks Tomas for your reply, I belive I have all there gloves, besides that really thick mitten style one, I can agree about the lack of sofistication of the Guide Glove, still they are better than most other brands I have. The rain version of there glove is quite large really and not well fitting but they are waterproof for a whole day of being out in the hail, so I guess that will/ought to excuse them to some extent. Best regards, by the way, I really liked this your last clip, we all make less then perfect shots and to edit those out would be unlike your style. /Chris
I figured if i can't be transparent about what I'm doing, then I am doing something wrong and should stop doing it. Back to gloves, I have over the years spent a lot of money on them but it has been the Marmot Sprig glove (Kuiu Guide done right) that has been my best allround glove and one of few successful "internet buys". I try to buy gloves in person as they require a lot of fit to be good, but my location makes selection somewhat limited. I have never dished out on the really expensive waterproof gloves, but I have always reinforced my gloves with good waterproof shell mittens when needed. There seems to be a fair amount of good ski gloves available, but I have never found them very suited for hunting due their size. Gloves are just one of those items I always look for and try when I'm in a sporting store, but so much of it just seems to be fluffy/soft/cheap/fashion and the work gloves are too often built to be expendable despite good fit.
👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for taking the time!
How many people did you have with you? Did you leave any of the animal out there or just the gut pile?
1 person. We leave only the gralloch (gut pile).
Waking up to a new THLR video = a good day!
Are those the 220gr ELD-X? What sort of damage / meat loss are you getting with them?
225gr ELD M. The big bullet and the high velocity has been the big problem, when they hit bones they really fragment and bones go everywhere. It is a bit excessive and not something I will stay with (30 at high V0).
AH, have you considered the ELD-X, they are designed not to fragment as much as the M. Actually, the 212gr X (.673) have a bigger BC than the 220gr X (.650) would you believe?
I tried to get it, but it was unavailable at the time. As it is, I will not be using the heavy 30 anymore for the deer as it's just a lot more power than I need.
Have you decided what caliber you are going to use next season?
A 7mm of some sort seems like the obvious choice for your kind of deer hunting with the R8.
That was the logical choice for me as well, but the professional hunters were not keen on that. As they love their 243's I figured I'll try the 6 XC as it is the only suitable 6mm where I can buy match ammo and reload adequate hunting rounds.
Wow, it will be interesting to see how 6XC will perform on deer in your "controlled" hunting mode.
With 6XC you should be able to mount a camera on your rifle with good results.
I am looking for a good "film through the scope" solution, but the Torrey Pines one seems rather unweildy. I've seen what the local hunters do with their 243's, so I am fairly confident the 6 XC will do equally well.
Our hunting community's concepts of appropriate game calibres were formed during the copper cup/lead bullet days. The new generation of bullet technology makes calibres perform one step up in my opinion i.e. .223/5.56 like a .243/6mm...like a 7mm...like a .308/.300...like a .338
what was the distance when you shot?
Not sure, but nothing extraordinary.
THLR.NO but you have missed first shot or I'm wrong?
No, I missed on the third shot. Shot one, two, four hit.
THLR.NO Ooo sorry, ok.
Dead is dead whether with a bowling ball dropped from a B-747, a .300NM with near 40 ft-lbs of recoil or a 6.5 with 12 ft-lbs of recoil. You have an admirable inquiring mind and have to find out for yourself. Well Self, what have you found ?
That it isn't needed to make them properly dead ;)
I see in a few of your comments that you agree these aren't your best shots, the first in particular looks a bit off, but at the end of the day all deer made it into the larder so you cant complain too much!
My only comment would be that these shots all seem a bit far out, getting close is what this game is about when it comes to stalking, particularly here in the UK.
Although I do understand that we have quotas to fill and that often you can't get close and maybe that was the case here, but the closer you are the more time you have to take subsequent deer after your first shot!
I agree. It is more efficient to stalk closer and have more opportunities.
Also it allows you to make better decisions as to which beast is best to take, it can be a difficult decision with the hinds!
It depends too on whether or not you need to anchor the animal without it running. For strong mountain Tahr I use 300 WM to drop them where they stand as the terrain for recovery can change very quickly if they run 20 metres then fall.
This was the exact conclusion in the article I delivered to Vapentidningen: If you need the animal anchored on the spot (as can be the case in mountains especially), do consider bringing the extra punch and take whatever error margin on winddrift a good bullet will offer you as even 2-3 cm displacement can in worst-case be what cuts nerves and anchors vs having the animal break line of sight or run off. With the hours that goes into an approach, spending a few more seconds at building a good shooting position should be worth the extra security and energy the shot will offer.
Yes I totally agree and have seen what you say with my hunters too. The extra time to get a solid rest and shooting position greatly improves chances of a well-placed shot and a successful hunt.
Very Valid justification...linear thinking for shooting a small circular confluence..CE
Sorry CR, my grasp of English is not quite good enough to understand that one.
Beautiful country and now for some good eating
Paul Watterson Yes the Highlands can be really beautiful, it is one of those places where I'd like to spend a lot more time.
Gday Thomas, fantastic video mate... the quality continues to impress!Have you managed to get your hands on some Lapua 300 NM brass yet? I’m looking forward to trying it to see if it holds up better than Norma’s!Thanks Again for a great video!!
No I don't think I will try it. I expect when the Norma brass is gone, my barrel will also be gone and then it should be time for a new barrel. In other calibres I have not noticed any difference between Lapua and Norma brass.
lol kuiu camo doing its thing. should check out katabatic sleeping bags best in the buisness as far as im concerned. just bought an alsek & it may be the best quality ive ever seen or am ever going to see
Kuiu is good, but some details should've been solved better to handle rain + wind as there is a difference between enduring and thriving in an environment. Sorry for the late reply, today has seen a rush of comments that RUclips hasn't displayed to me earlier.
Ever seen any Mountain Giants on your hikes?
Not lately. Used to be fair numbers, the grey type.
I wonder if the bison hunters of the US West waited for broadside shots ?
I read a fair bit about bison hunting some 20 years ago, but I can't remember anything about that detail.
Its true that the gouverment in Norway wants ban all semi auto guns till 2021?
No
THLR.NO but i read an article in the german newspaper and heard this story from a norwegian guy that the gouverment want forbidden semi auto guns? So u say its not true?
MSKommando Proposition 165 L suggests to ban full autos converted to semi auto as well as semi autos constructed for military purposes and firearms concealed as other objects. Sports shooting with approved weapons is suggested to be excempted.
THLR.NO When is the new video?
dnacodegun April
Thomas do you have Instagram?. It would be good to know you better.
greetings from Chile
Sorry no, I don't use Instagram or own a smartphone.
02:00 bingo
It is a little amazing what a million dollar industry creating camo patterns for hunters has turned into. When I grew up you would hardly see any camo on hunters, today it is very very common.
this reminds me of avatar
Avatar, the James Cameron movie? I'm surprised.
@@THLR I was referencing the multiple colored scenery of purples and magenta, not the anti-imperialistic themes
Got yah. Imperialism is a solid part of world history, still is.
First time to give it a 👎sorry 🤔 but you seem to rush while taking your shots while stalking . Not a target that rings when you hit it at what ever distance but a living animal that should be a straight forward shot if you waited
It all depends on the situation really. It was lack of patience (not waiting for a full broadside) that caused the miss and a reminder that broadside IS the best shot. If you are refering to deer number 2, that really was not a rushed shot as the setup and preparation was done on deer number 1. When all the decisions are made, the position is solid and you are basically just tracking the deer and waiting for the perfect shot, then not much time is needed. If deer number 2 had been the first deer shot and everything had been rushed, I would wholeheartedly agree with you. But all in all, this was not stellar shooting on my behalf; first deer was shot a little too far back and the third deer was missed first shot.
THLR.NO great video you need to try some late night foxing. Cheers John
I have tried it some when the property I was shooting did pheasant. I was always out with the keeper and he always verified the background and animal for me before I took the shoot. Nightfoxing is something I would feel very uncomfortable doing without the absolute local knowledge they demonstrated (knowing EXACTLY where we are and what the background is).
Best innovations for foxing...a good Foxpro electronic caller...a good light...a Savage A17 in .17HMR ( 17 gr bullets very safe re. ricochet danger also super quiet with suppressor )...Caldwell Deadshot Shooting Tripod...canvas chair
