Tbh Ian I think it's a better looking wee tree now thanks to your accident, the trunk will hopefully develop some natural taper and interesting movement ...also, did you realise the 2022 text dates are coming up as '21?
cheers. yeah hopefully it work out for the best. as for the 2021... i thought i changed that... clearly not. and clearly i have no idea what year we are in as i didnt notice that hahaha
Nice little tree, I have a little sycamore seedling which I might try and do something similar to. I also had a similar accident with one of my jade plants.
Discovered your channel today, already watched a lot of the videos and im amazed, really worth the sub! discovered while looking for sycamore bonsais since i just bought a big pre-bonsai, 60 cm and thick, it is suposed to be 20 years old. Any tips besides the ones on the videos ? i wanted to make him bud back and try to have branches coming out on the outside of the curves to make a kind of a mix betwen informal upright and broom style. By the way, any advice on fertilizer ? since the leaves are huge on normal sycamore what are you using to try and keep them small ?
cheers. sounds like you have a pretty epic sycamore. Ive found the leaves reduce with pruning. so i guess give it time and they will go down, but i think it will always be a battle. as for fertiliser. im just using 20-20-20 which is probably way to strong for it, but im not worried for now, as it develops i will probbaly try and use less nitrogen, so the that should help a bit
@@BackGardenBonsai it looks pretty great, im still waiting for the delivery of it, thank you so much for your help! Here in portugal the strongest fertilizer i found is osmocote, i think its 17-9-11 i will use this :)
@@BackGardenBonsai no need for a rest! your videos are great. You have a day of the week you release a new video? Is that information somewhere i missed? You got a good formula here. Terry, Nigel, and you do a really spectacular job. I would say each has strengths but all three show exactly what needs to be shown. Almost exactly how it needs to be shown. Your narration is outstanding for sure your voice is even and audible. you come of as a genuine person which makes you likeable. The format you show trees is awesome too. Keep up the good work man!
Which of us haven't had this happen to them. There is a moment of stunned silence while compression sets in, and then SH****T!!! (in what ever language you are most fluent in). I suspect that you would have eventually done this to the tree anyway. Tree will be killer for it.
hahah yeah there was defo a moment of silence before the profanity started. and maybe it would have been removed anyway, but im sure it will end fine anyway :)
I've been able to repair some broken branches with 'Gorilla Glue,' and tape, or wire, or both. I think if half or more of the bark is intact, it can work - depending on species and health, and probably time-of-year. This glue foams up into an ugly mess, but it cures in about an hour, doesn't seem to chemically hurt the tree at all, and creates structural support to allow the tear to be immobilized so the branch can continue to grow. I can trim the hardened foamy bulge down to something credible, and then, I suppose, stain it to blend in. . I haven't gotten to that point with any of my repaired trees yet, where I might want to show them and hide the wound. . . . Your mileage may vary. . . .
cheers. yeah ive done that for cracked branches. it seems to work well. not sure how well it would have worked on this. its a pretty tough grower, so it might have actually worked!
They almost look like maple leaves. My sycamore's leaves are much fatter, with almost indistinguishable lobes. The leaves are about the size of both of my hands together also. Maybe the UK sycamore is different than the American?
They look like maple leaves because these are maple leaves. In America those are called sycamore maples. In the UK sycamore trees are called plane trees.
@@husch05 Gottcha, that makes sense. I thought maybe he had got the leaves to reduce so much that the lobes were a little more pronounced or something. Good to know though, thanks!
Been there,,, done that Ian. Those disasters can have a unexpectedly happy ending in bonsai. Thanks, keep growing
Cheers Matt, yeah only a temporary issue, im sure it will all be fine with time :)
By April you can’t even tell it’s missing half the tree, looks great
cheers, yeah i doest really miss it!
can we get the behind the scenes audio for the moment you snapped the tree? 😂
hhaha its not suitable for youtube
Ooh I actually held my breath when half of the tree disappeared 😲
haha yeah it wasnt fun to watch!
@@BackGardenBonsai I'm sure it will recover given time.
Finally here. Yes. Mine has had its first year as a bonsai tree. I started following you this time last year it was fate
Cheers, hopefully yours is doing well too!
@@BackGardenBonsai yeah it's really odd but I'm sure by the end of next year it'll have more character again
I have to admit, that gave me a good giggle :D
haha cheers bro :)
I was waiting for you to just chop the rest of it. Lol. It looks nice enough after anyways. No big harm done. Cheers broski 😎🍺🍺
cheers bro hahha i didnt wanna lose anymore!
great roots!
Cheers :)
That mistake will cause the trunk to get some nice taper. Nobody's perfect.
Bonsai has definitely helped me to be less hard with myself.
cheers. hopefully it helps in the long run:)
Buddy should have some PVA glue handy to stick these back together. Done it myself and the glue worked a treat, year later you'd never know.
haha i thought about going inside to get some, but i know deep down it will be better without it

Seems like you need 52 trees so you can do a weekly video of a tree through the previous year! You have a good way of doing videos!
Cheer,s I have more than 52 trees, but i only do 50 videos in a year to give myself.. and probably everyone else a rest over xmas

Are you fertilizing? I had to prune my sycamores 3 times this year (Europe).
yes i am.
they are fast growers!! i think i pruned mine 3 times last year. it seemed to clam down a lot this year
did you mean 2021, or 22? with the writing on the video?
lovely tree though, very cute
Cheers. yes its wrong, it should be mostly 22. im not sure if there was a technical issue...or i just dont know what year we are in!
Bonsai beginner here, what soil mixture do you use?
give this a read - www.backgardenbonsai.com/a-general-guide-to-bonsai-soil/
it should tell you all you need to know about soil :)

yeah UK sycamore is Acer pseudoplatanus, so it is indeed a maple.
Syc FOIST
I literally had a heart break when the branch got snipped by accident
me too haha. but its okay now
Awesome video.
