What is really weird is I had exactly the same snacks in the south so it's really a convenience/budget situation.
There's some good snacks but there's also a lot of garbage. Arizona tea and Utz chips will always be good. The Little Debbie brand and other pastries are garbage and don't even taste that good, the only exception being honey buns.

My dad is well off now and retired but he grew up in a poor family, he always used to eat them as an afterschool snack. To this day he always keeps some stocked in his pantry.

As a kid we didn’t get a lot of snacks but if you got up early, like 5am, you could find zebra cakes and hunny buns at the day old bread store. They were extra crunchy. And if you wanted them to last you put them in the freezer. Still the way I like my snacks.
Kids these days will never know about Flowers (day old bread store by me). My mom would buy me a tiny little pre-baked apple pie in a tin on Saturdays

@@mmoore5190 I was down south as a kid. It’s all the baked goods that are close to expiration. They sell everything so cheap. But nothing wrong with it. Ya just have to freeze it to lock in expression date. Eat it within a month and it’s good bread. When ya broke ya find a way to feed kids. One other amazing thing is most grocery stores used to have a dented can or dented box section. Everything was 1/2 off. Or go to a butcher shop and ask if they have meat about to expire, they will practically give it away. So ya get a steak, day old baguette and dented can of mushrooms or beans and that’s an amazing meal on a budget. All this food gets thrown away so mine as well take advantage of it. I think stores are better about know how much to stock now with computers doing record keeping. Same deals the day after a holiday FYI
Man the bakery where I lived as a kid used to give us free zebra cakes and things when they got crunchy and I swear they’re better that way

as a person who grew up in New Jersey, i miss the delis and all the corner stores that had those nostalgic items i loved, and building friendly relationships with the owners/cashiers was top tier. the Midwest don’t do it like nj and ny sadly.

I’ve been in nyc my entire life but interestingly enough when I went to college in buffalo, there was this one little bodega store across the street run by this Arab family. Always use to go over to get the 99 cent chips, honey buns, or Arizona.

It's been awhile since I've had a Zebra Cake. I know them as this hexagonal shaped cake, as you said with filling in the middle much like a Hostess Ding Dong in texture and feel. I didn't realize they'd changed them until now! Ugh!
