ARRESTED FOR ASSAULTING SERVICE DOG & HANDLER

  • My opinion, even if the dog did jump on her, it sounds like she was instigating a lot before that happened. Some state laws protect service animals when they do something after being instigated by someone. In this situation, that argument with the woman, and no telling what else she did therefor being the reason the dog jumped.
Service Dogs are NOT robots. They are well trained. But you have to LEAVE THEM ALONE TO DO THEIR JOBS.
It’s illegal to interfere with a service dog. To harm them. Etc.
    Give us space! #servicedog #arrested #assault

Yesterday I went to the park to train my two service dogs. They were doing absolutely amazing but when we got there a huge group of like 6 year olds came running to them (keep in mind my dogs are still in training) and that really startled them but I was proud of them for not going crazy or anything they just jumped back. The kids were all asking to pet them and my dad was there and I kept looking at him to tell the kids something like they are service dogs working because I have a hard time talking to people. The kids kept asking to pet and my answer kept being the same “it’s better not to pet a working a dog” and all that stuff. The kids proceeded to ask (and their parents were there) and they just started petting them which really started triggering me. I started explaining to them how important it is not to pet a working dog. Then they insulted one of my dogs which was the one that was more trained because it wasn’t listening to all the children’s commands they were giving her. My dogs missed an alert because the whole time we were there to train, the kids were petting the dogs without my permission and asking many questions. Eventually, the last 7 minutes we were there, the kids said they’d let us go train. My dad went to go sit on a bench with one of my dogs and the other I was training an ALERT to. The kids came running back over and wanted to train her. They were completely acting like the alert was a game and fun stuff so they kept having her try to alert them to nothing and all the kids were giving her different commands at a time and all that was really stressful for me. It’s very important to teach service dogs to little kids because if they weren’t little, what they did would have gotten arrested. The kids also were throwing sticks and bouncing beach balls on my dogs head luckily they didn’t really care. It’s really sad when you are disabled trying to live a good happy life but people act like your dog trying to save your life is a game 😞

Should have told the parents that if they don't go away with their kids that u r going to have the police take them away.
It's one thing to teach people who r willing to listen and be respectful.
It's completely different to allow people who r rude and actually causing major issues to continue to do so.
People like that need taught a harsher lesson right then and there.
I don't tolerate people messing with my service dog.
Especially throwing stuff at my service dog and or causing the dog to miss an alert.
That is them technically breaking the laws.
      I honestly would have snapped.
I would have flipped out on them and had the police called at that point.
Clearly the parents don't want to teach their kids, so apparently the law needs to step in and help teach them both.

If the alert was jumping on the handler and this woman was too close? I am very happy that the woman got in trouble because no matter what she should not have kicked the dog. Even just her kicking the dog is awful. Just because a dog jumps on you does not mean their aggressive. People forget that dogs can't talk so they express happiness differently, and sometimes that's jumping. Also, the service dog could have thought it was tasking. Who knows but either way the woman SHOULD NOT have kicked the dog. Just saying the cop did very well and if I were the cop in that situation I may not have been so nice finding out the woman kicked the dog. Makes me furious when someone hurts an animal. There’s nothing we can provide to anyone.
They can only ask two questions per the law. 1. Is it a service animal required for a disability? 2. What tasks is it trained to perform?
If the dog is out of control and misbehaving, and the handler does not take effective action to control the animal, they can legally be removed.
9 times out of 10. Someone showing you some sort of ID or paperwork, doesn’t have a legitimate service dog. I have paperwork from our program, but we are not to disclose it.
You make your judgement based off the dog itself. It’s fairly easy to tell a service dog, or even one in training whos still learning, apart from an average untrained pet dog.

I worked in the Hotel industry as an Assistant General Manager, I had plenty of individuals bring service animals in. Employees are only allowed to ask 2 specific questions and we are not allowed to request any further information regarding the animal or individual as that is protected information - asking for such information can get an employee in trouble if not terminated. We typically noted on guest records if the individual had a service animal so if they ever visited another location the staff never had to ask again regarding the animal and typically, we try to include the animals name so they could also be greeted as a guest.
But it is the second question that allows us to determine if the animal is a Qualified service animal under the ADA as they are specifically trained to perform a task and the individual can identify the type of task without providing information regarding their condition, unfortunately Emotional Support animals are not covered by the ADA as they don't perform a specific task and are not permitted. Many times, we would have guest try to bring in dogs, cats and birds as Emotional Support animals, the hotel had a zero-pet policy except Service Dogs, so depending on the length of stay and availability of pet friendly locations nearby would we either move their reservation or charge a Pet fee.

Eh. If you’re antagonizing, I could see how a dog could become nervous in some situations. You don’t know the full context of what happened. For all we know the dog jumped after being kicked. That’s just what she claims.
Either way. Service dogs aren’t robots.
Under normal circumstances, yes they shouldn’t jump. But under serious stress, you’re expecting an animal to handle that better than most of us people do? Cut the dogs some slack. I’m so sick of worrying about my dog being perfect. She always is. But service dogs are still dogs. And mistakes DO happen. It’s normal. And it’s okay.
But not knowing the full story, we can’t jump to conclusions.

Yea no the dog never actually jumped on her.
      She lied about that.
She got arrested and charged with battery on a person over 65 and disorderly conduct

Sometimes jumping on the handler can be a task. Just saying.
Also it's Important to point out that a service dog can have a bad day because they are living beings and we all have bad days. The consequence of a service dog having a bad day is losing public access rights. That's all. It it up to the business to decide if they want to enforce their rights to kick the team out. All a customer can do is leave the business. There is no legal recourse for a pet dog jumping on a person, unless the person is injured - then they can sue for damages (usually medical costs) - this isn't any different for a service dog having a bad day.
We need to stop framing misbehaving dogs as "fake service animals" (even if it doesn't play as well with the algorithm - maybe there's a way to hack this in title cards while still pivoting away from the narrative?) and instead call it was it is: an under trained dog, or a dog having a bad day. The "fake" service dog narrative emboldens folks who otherwise are not involved to harass service dog teams thinking they're catching a "faker", when they should be minding their own goddamn business. Many of them have a savior complex and want to "save the real disableds" from having to deal with "fakers" and all it does is hurt disabled people, especially those of us with invisible disabilities.

The cop is wrong. First off anyone can ask if a dog is a service animal and what task it is trained to do. So she can legally ask the owner of the dog. Second the dog wasn’t a service dog if it was jumping on her.

That still doesn’t excuse kicking the dog, that’s animal abuse plain and simple. And although service dogs have to be well behaved, it could have been in training, which is still protected under most circumstances. Or some service dogs (not all obviously) will alert on other people, which depending on what the dog is for, may be what’s happening because she was obviously getting angry and aggressive.

Anyone can ask. But she does not have to answer them. They aren’t employees. Compare it to when I cAll people out with fakes. The dog is barking etc. they don’t have to answer me. But I’m going to give them fucking hell until they get out because it’s beyond obvious it’s not a service dog and they are endangering mine

I don’t understand why some people think that they have the right to fuck with other people? Leave people alone and you won’t get arrested. Or in some cases you mess with the wrong person and you end up losing your life over something that wouldn’t even matter to a normal person. This woman is an absolute nightmare it’s a shame she never got taught to be polite on the street. Mind your own bobber people

Sadly a lot of us service dog handlers run into cases like this. I’ve had someone get physical with me over my dog before. They were lucky I didn’t swing when they pushed me

I’m glad She got arrested. I hope this shows people, that it’s not ok to harass us-Disabled people and our Service Dogs 🦮🐕‍🦺. Also, that anyone can probably end up like this person, if They keep trying to instigate/escalate the situation.
