The archivist of the palace. The old and wise pillar of Taoism. The non-existent.
That's right, friends, today we are going to talk about the side. Legend says that approximately 2500 years ago, there existed in the Chinese empire a character known as Laozi. The legend says that this character, widely recognized for his wisdom, one day decided to leave the empire. But just on the border, he met a guard who recognized him and asked him to please, before leaving, write his teachings to him.
So, the old sage, before crossing the border, sat under a tree, took ink and paper, and captured his wisdom in the text that we know today as the Tao Te Ching. He gave the text to the guard and departed, never to return. That is the legend. Although it may be that in reality, Laozi even existed, and if he existed, it is most likely that he did not write the Tao Te Ching in its entirety. This text is a compilation of the work of at least two authors.
Regardless of whether Laozi existed or not, the Tao Te Ching is the most important book of Taoist philosophy. It is a short book, beautiful, and one that you could well read in a couple of hours. In fact, as soon as I finish this video, I recommend that you go to read it. It is not wasted. In its pages, you will find ideas of metaphysics, ethics, and even political philosophy.
You are probably wondering what makes this book so special that it is still talked about more than 2500 years after its writing. In this video, we are going to try to answer those questions by explaining its main ideas. The title of the book, Tao Te Ching, can be translated into English as "The Book of the Way and Virtue." It is made up of 81 chapters of approximately two or three paragraphs each. It is the only text attributed to Laozi and is, along with the Zhuangzi and the Liezi, one of the basic texts of Taoist philosophy.
Chinese was written back then very differently from how it is communicated today. If we add to that the fact that it seems the author made an effort to write it ambiguously and that even some paragraphs seem to contradict others, then we have as a result a book whose translations and interpretations differ quite a lot from each other. However, in my opinion, this adds a certain charm to the book since it gives it a sense of mystery and depth.
The opportunity for the reader to look for different translations and compare them with each other. For the analysis that we are going to make of this book, we are going to divide its ideas into three groups: ideas of metaphysics, ideas of ethics, and ideas of political philosophy.
Metaphysics of the Tao: I am going to allow myself to express what it is so. It is something like an eternal energy, immutable but at the same time invisible, inaudible, practically imperceptible, at least with our corporeal senses. This energy is the origin of everything we perceive. Everything has its origin in the Tao, and at the same time, every state, all beings are a part of it. Your dog, your plant, you are Tao. We are all part and manifestation of Tao.
