I see I'm not the only one to get tears when I hear this song. Monkey was one of my childhood heroes, and of course, the song was just a theme with no real meaning for an 8 or 9 year old. It means SO MUCH to me now. I self published a fiction book 2 years ago, and I even managed to slip a Monkey reference into the story. That's my tip-of- the- hat to this one- of-a- kind show.
i became a buddhist after rewatching this show in my late teens - early twenties, its a wonderful story on the origins of the scriptures and shows alot of the gods and mythologys of the 2 cultures.
I loved this program as a very young kid. From the opening music to this closing song I watched and listened to every second. This song in particular makes me very nostalgic.
This song has never left me. Still remember being a kid and watching Monkey on overcast winter afternoons after school. Listening to this song, I could look out my window and be instantly transported to China's majestic mountain peaks and mysterious forest dales...
In, or around 1978-1980 Monkey & Dr Who were my 2 favorite shows & then Tom Baker left Dr Who & so there was only Monkey...& then season 2 happened & they replaced Toshiyuki Nishida's Pigsy & that was it for me. I started going out after school much more. LOL & I echo your comment, boy was she beautiful.

This song began my realization of the Buddha as my teacher. I was a 8 year old British Caribbean boy born to Christian family. Today as a man i am a Buddhist.
watching this as a child growing up in Christian society made me Buddhist too, I never forgot the lessons I learnt thru this show watching as a child in the 80's

Can’t wait for my birthday next week, finally will the Monkey dvd set, been raving about Monkey magic since I was a child in the ‘80s’😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍 Thank you for the memories, awesome and powerful song 😇
Every time I hear this song it makes me picture all the ancient buildings and relics of past times and makes me feel happy and sad and vice versa. Huge fan of the song and Monkey
THANKYOU!! I lost about 3 hours one afternoon last year trying to find this version!!! SO much better than the slow one. I was having a bad day, and you sir/madam, have made it better. Thankyou.
It is legendary. I have most of the episodes on DVD, both my younger sisters have the box set and the youngest also has the book 'Journey to the West'. She keeps very few books, so you know how important it is to her. I know I watched it in the late 80s because my older brother was watching it on ABC (he's your age). I know it was still the 80s because I initially found seeing a Monkey erupt out of an egg (not to mention the mountain) disturbing, lol. It was for 'older' kids, so what was this silly nonsensical stuff? Can you imagine a little kid cornering her father into a discussion where she's demanding an explanation for the disturbing magic egg thing at the beginning of what was otherwise a good show? Dad's really good with feelings but I don't recall coming out of that conversation very intellectually satisfied, lol. (That narrator is NOT David Attenborough and the egg thing is clay-mation aka fiction). So many years later and I have found new ways to be impressed by the 1970s show. So much real life magic went into it. The actors, the voice over actors. The missing episodes. And then there's Godiego. Singing in multiple languages is not normal; it's amazing. Children don't understand the world enough to issue the kind of respect Godiego deserves for singing their song in English for them. Monkey Magic will, like the book, stand the test of time because it tells of the human condition... and the choreography is a masterclass in search of a student. You can type Godiego or Monkey Magic into Spotify and listen.
For some reason this popped into my head on the way home from work. I thought listening to it would rid me of the earworm, but it's just made me want to watch the show again.
The first season ran from October 1978 to April 1979. The second season ran from November 1979 to May 1980. Both seasons were filmed on location in northwest China. The series had an unusual appearance as it was filmed by Japanese actors in China and then dubbed into English
This is major corner stone of my early childhood, here in the UK, I must've been 7-8 years old. The BBC picked up the dubbed version of the show and me and a school mate watched it endlessly and blew out whilst waving our fingers against our mouths
I was in hospital when this was showing and it took my mind off things. I'd never seen it before but it was so new I kept watching but missed the end of it. Thanks for sharing.
This is awesome! I loved this show. Guess I was in my teens, back in England. I even bought the vinyl single. the opening song and this on the B side. This was way better than the A side. 🙂
Yes, thinking of looking into it actually, never found any religion that fits with my beliefs yet but Buddhism seems to have caused zero damage to the world as far as I can see, that's got to count for something. So glad Buddhism has positively impacted your life x
Im pretty sure Im the only person from gen Z to have watched Monkey Magic. Although Im still young it still holds a certain nostalgia that brings me back to my early child hood. Banger song!1!!!!111!!
A long time ago, When men were all babes, There was a land of the free. Fantasy and dreams Were its untouched wealth. And goodness and love were real. Each man desires to reach Gandhara- His very own Utopia. In the striving and the seeking soul, Men can see Gandhara… In Gandhara, Gandhara! They say it was in India! Gandhara, Gandhara! The place of light, Gandhara! Gandhara, Gandhara! They say it was in India! Gandhara, Gandhara! The place of light, Gandhara…
Gandhara was situated in what is today north western Pakistan and southern and eastern Afghanistan. The name of the modern Afghan city of Kandahar is said to have derived its name from the ancient land. From around the 3rd century BCE it became a major centre of Buddhism. It was from here that the religion spread to the Far East, via the Silk routes. For centuries thereafter, it remained a place of pilgrimage for Chinese Buddhist monks seeking knowledge and enlightenment.
I so loved this T.V. series - so much so that I read Wu Chen Eng`s classic work as a teenager - and I still have the copy on my bookshelf - "my very own Utopia!"
Surely, this is one greatest TV series theme songs of all time, along with the title theme. The unused second verse of the song is also very beautiful: A long time ago when men were all babes; There was a land of the free. Fantasy and dreams were its untouched wealth, And goodness and love were all real. A long ago and far beyond the winding road; Always beyond every bend; A beautiful land still waits for the few, Who make it to the very end.

@slurrytits the priest character she played is actually a boy in the story. Program makers often use women to play young men or boys because the voice fits. So they have someone who looks and sounds (somewhat) like a boy but who has adult acting skills.

This is in a faster tempo compare with an alubum version. A single record was bit faster than the album. On TV, the tempo was rather faster than the single record. Its original story(title) ''Saiyuki'' is very popular in Japan, too, even though it originally is a Chinese story. I loved to watch this show when I was young.

A long time ago,
When men were all babes,
There was a land of the free.
Fantasy and dreams
Were its untouched wealth.
And goodness and love were real.
Each man desires to reach Gandhara-

In Gandhara, Gandhara!
They say it was in India!
