Masako Natsume - who played the priest Tripitaka - tragically died very young in 1985 at only 27 yrs old. She had leukemia. Such a beautiful & talented young lady gone way too soon. RIP. 😞
Thanks for that information. She was an Angel or Bodhisatva incarnated to inspire us. Maybe her job was finished and this place too dense for her beauty and compassion.
So long as her work remains to be watched and enjoyed by many generations to come, she will forever be with us all. Physically, she is gone, but her spirit remains, forever.
That is the saddest thing I've heard all year. I hope with all my heart, she has been reincarnated as a beautiful cat , loved unconditionally, and freed from the suffering of money and hypocrisy. ,
Amazing memories. I WAS one of those little kids back in the early 1980's in THE UK who marvelled at this. Now, I'm about to start training to express my life as a Soto Zen Buddhist Priest. Lol. May all find Buddha within. *
I'm in Australia and I think I was in 2nd grade. A little boy from Vietnam had come to my school and moved into my street. He introduced me to this show and I loved it. That's a long time ago!
Superb and thanks. When this came on in the late 1970's UK, once a week, the whole family would be ready to watch. Next day at school we would relive the fight scenes, marvelous times.
Down here in Oz it was always so good to come home from school and watch Monkey Magic. Way better than "The Monkees", "Banana Splits" etc. even "Dr. Who". 50 years later it's even better. The TV world seems to have regressed.
"The Middle Way" is central to the Buddhist teachings. Being aware that our physical reality is an illusion projected by our minds ought not to interfere with our compassion for one another, ie even though its only happening in a dream, we must still honor the other in their path to obtaining Buddhahood (Enlightenment), even though in time, other travellers may be progressively slower and others more advanced, the middle path reminds us not to take an extreme stance on our path to enlightenment.
Me too. I used to see the Japanese version at 8 pm every Sunday back then, when I was seven. By the way, this English dub is awesome. It's pretty faithful to the original. I feel like each Japanese actor spoke English though there is no way in fact.
Walrider Ghosts We are so used to seeing the English dubbed version, which makes them sound funny. But I wonder if we would enjoy the Japanese version with subtitles. Andrew Sachs ( Manuel, form Fawlty Towers) did the voice of the horse in the later episodes.
core remix 🙂welcome to England!Teach us master! Was the English dialogue very different from the Japanese script? I read that the writer only had plot synopses to work from, and made up the rest.
So the world isn't real nor an illusion but somewhere in between, with no way of telling illusion from reality. Thanks for that Buddha, that's a real help.
I think what Tripitaka is trying to say is that our concept of what is real is based on the delusion of our senses. When we sleep, we dont know what is real and interpret the dream world as....real. When awake, we only experience an unimaginably small part of our existance, we cant see, hear everything. Before the advent of tv and newspapers - we didn't even know was happening outside our town or village. In todays world of mass media - the truth is literally a matter of interpretation. What is the absolute truth that is infallible? That all things change!
Wow I watched this an glued to the TV an weird thing is now I actually understand what the simbolism within is, even when she says funny worlds we create from our own minds the middle path means nor good or bad but stable and evolved... This is very much so real karma the lot very strange how we create our own realities as tests.. No escaping our own real true consciences.... We are our own gate keepers...
TheTraveler thanks for reply I watched this as a child an had no idea the messages within but since then have studied the occult and spirituality this makes much sense now. Another weird things are I got tattoos not knowing the real meaning until now.. Thanks will check it out BTW I did ten day vipassana meditation retreat an understand kundalini the spine being the middle pillar also..
I used to watch this religiously back in the mid 1980's!!! And I loved it and I still love it now!! Probably watched it from 1988 to 1990 max. It's SO surreal watching this in 2020 now as a 42 old when I started watching this at 9 etc. I hope to find more episodes somehow on YT but I'm not betting on it but I'll take what I can get for now. Since I'm Australia our ABC showed it and I bet they have it archived but they'll never show it now because of our now pc nature. I miss this series and thanks for uploading it!!!

Me and my brother loved watching this show. I am only here remembering these old ones, because I just noticed and watched a couple of the new, The Legends of Monkey, a remake on Netflix. I enjoyed the first two episodes of the new version so far, nothing beats the original though.
My brother used to go around the house quoting the narrator at the beginning of each episode my mum used to shake her head haha eg: "The Phoenix can fly only when its feathers have grown'..😂
I still have my Original Monkey Record(vinyl), still play it from time to time, this and The Water Margin were two of my favourite shows back then. I was also watching Kung Fu with David Carradine, i still can't walk on Sand without leaving a footprint ,lol.
abs brilliant loved this when i was a kid and its sooo timeless even though theres a new legentds of monkey on netflix, this is fantastic, the dialogue , voices sounds and story and direction a tour de force
We all loved it because Monkey kicked ass and had a flying cloud but we were taking on the subconscious deep profound wisdom. That said dont lie to old witches, lol.
Monkey is on NETFLIX atm. I always thought that this was all illusion, before i even heard it in Buddha or esoteric teachings. All our dreams crossing over and sometimes we meet for a reason. All of us distracted by so many things. If someone thinks it, then create it, and bring it into the dream. Imagine what an Ancient Egyptian would think of a smartphone. Who knows what the future will bring, we'll dream it as we go i suppose. (edit) when asleep and dreaming, i don't know I'm dreaming until i wake up.
I don't remember how this episode ends, very curious. Interesting to see how quick Tripitaka's travelling companions are to judge someone after all they had done.

The emphasis on compassion, forgiveness and redemption in this show is extraordinary.
It was also great at exposing cowards and types of personalities that exploit kindness.
