Absolutely fascinating! It's amazing how you take things that you see often for granted and never give them a second thought! Great video, thanks for posting.
Very interesting & enjoyable. As a Newbury person, I love to know what I can about it because it has so much history & I don't think the residents are made aware of just how much there is, it's brilliant to find this on RUclips, I have learnt something new, great commentating as well. Thank you
Fabulous work. As a Newbury lad this was really great to see. Excellent presentation and very engaging. Do keep up the good work. Newbury is a fascinating town with a wealth of hidden history.
Really interesting, and very well produced. Thank you for this, Philip. I grew up in Newbury and I have it in my mind that the Cote Brasserie building was a Golden Egg restaurant when I was a nipper. I may well be wrong. Edit: Mrs Bob S was peering over my shoulder when writing this, and noted that I never grew up. So better clarify; I was born and spent my formative years in Newbury.
Haha! My wife says “The only difference between men and boys is the cost of their toys!” As for the Cote Brasserie, it was known as the Tudor Cafe until the 1970s. You might find it useful to join the Facebook group ‘Memories of Newbury and West Berkshire’ There are lots of information and old photos there. Thanks for your kind words. All the best. More videos to come after lockdown ends.
Yes, but even the best last only a few hundred years. In the context of eternity, that’s not very long! Fascinating and exciting concept! Thanks for your message.
The opening scene you walk in front of the old bus station buildings. I used wait there to catch the bus with my Mom . A small sandwich bar used to sell the best ham sandwiches on the planet!.
That was Brilliant! I watched the vid already knowing the answer, but learnt a lot of new info along the way! Who knew the Cote Brasserie building was the oldest in Northbrook street... wow!
Thankyou. It was a pleasure to make. I have another in the works. It’s taking a long time to finish. It’s about Jack of Newbury. Subscribe to get notifications.
Very interesting! Very well narrated and produced too. Newbury is a fascinating city in a lovely part of the world. I loved the area around the Mills and wandering the back streets. Today, Newbury seems better well known as the HQ for Vodafone, oc course!
This is fantastic. I've lived in Newbury for 20 years so this was fascinating. I currently live in Oddfellows Hall - I'd be interested to know about this building.
Thanks for your kind words. Unfortunately I’m a film maker, not a history buff. There are some local history groups on Facebook that could help you. They were very helpful to me. Also, Google is a godsend! 😂
Lovely video. I grew up in West Mills. Had no idea that those cottages were as old as that. I guess there's sometimes ambiguity with dendrochronology as old beams can get reused in slightly newer structures. I guess a good archeologist can pick these things out though
Alexander .Farrow You are correct. This is apparently an issue with Bartholomew Manor, where the man who renovated it (in the 1930s I believe) introduced Tudor materials from derelict cottages that could confuse future historians.
Brilliant Phil, felt like I was watching a BBC documentary!
John O'Connell Thanks John. It was great fun to make.
Very interesting indeed....and so well presented.
John Curtis Thanks for your kind words.

Go to the Lock Stock and Barrel Pub and ask to see roof rafters above the Cellar.

Nice one Phil. Ineresting to see how long well made buildings can last. Maybe we will get to experience that in the future!

Ah, those were the days! Now there's a modern bus station across the road from there; but no ham sandwich bar!
What a fascinating video, and professionally produced as well. Brilliant.

Interesting old houses :-) those row of cottages along west mills are pretty impressive

Thanks Simon. It was made for fun so it’s a little rough around the edges. But the story carries it...!
Keep them coming, Phil! I'm a Newburian, moving to America! It'll be great to see some of where I came from when I leave...
Thanks Jon. I’ve another nearly finished. Enjoy the States.
A hugely interesting (and perfectly executed) video. My Mum lives in West Mills so she'll be fascinated by this. Thank you!
Thanks for your kind words! If I’d known about your mum, I would have dropped in for a cuppa when I was filming! 😂
Very interesting, I enjoyed watching this. Thank you.
