The Millstones in the Wall (History of Crete)
On a recent holiday in Crete, I discovered so many fascinating ruins that I had to make a video. Filmed entirely on an iPhone 11 and edited with Final Cut Pro.
Warning for those of a nervous disposition: Since I was on holiday, I appear throughout the video in shorts, tee shirt and a hat!

Who Shot King Charles? (A History of Shaw House in Newbury)
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.Год назад
For years visitors to Shaw House in Newbury, Berkshire, have been fascinated by the brass plate that apparently hides a musket ball aimed at King Charles 1st during the Second Battle of Newbury. But does it really? I went on a search to solve the mystery and, on the way, discovered some very interesting facts about the Jewel in Newbury's crown. For more information about historical and cultural...
Newbury Artisan Market 2022
Просмотров 5292 года назад
On the last Sunday of every month, Newbury hosts an Artisan market, filled with stalls selling delicious world-food and hand crafted wares. It's such a great experience that I felt it needed to be celebrated! On the bridge I encountered Paul, who can create syncopation from everyday objects.
The Legend of Newbury Castle
Просмотров 2 тыс.2 года назад
My name is Phil Cutting and I am fascinated by the history of Newbury. Many people have asked me about Newbury Castle and, since its origins are shrouded in mystery, I decided to research it. The legend of Newbury Castle is so powerful that it exists as a stylised image on the Newbury Town Council coat of arms to this day. But... no one knows where it once was! Of course, I'm not an expert; but...
Whatever Happened to Jack of Newbury?
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.3 года назад
Jack of Newbury is a legend in Newbury. But few people know anything about him. I'm fascinated by mysteries and I decided to research the subject. There are lots of resources on the Internet and suitable search phrases will uncover many web pages. The problem is that original documentation is thin on the ground and, with the passage of many centuries, interpreting that evidence is hard. Since I...
Oldest House in Newbury
Просмотров 12 тыс.4 года назад
This video is about the very oldest buildings in Newbury and how Dendrochronology has enabled historians to date them accurately. It all started with “Lockdown”. I’ve always kept very busy in my retirement but my wife and I fell into the “vulnerable” category so we had to stay in. Previously, because I’m one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, you might have seen me manning one of our display stands in Nor...
Thatcham Nature Discovery Centre

Thatcham Nature Discovery Centre is part of a collection of flooded gravel pits near Newbury in the UK. Carefully managed for wildlife, and in parts for fishing, it’s a pleasure to visit. Armed with a Panasonic FZ200 with its absurdly long, stabilised lens (bought for very little money off eBay) I collected a few shots and edited them in less than an hour to produce this little piece. A recent visit to Tenerife prompted a video record of some of the most amazing natural spectacles on the island: From the barren volvcanic slopes of the south, patrolled by Pilot Whales and dolphins, to the dramatic green precipices of the far north, Tenerife is far more than a beach resort: it's an amazing jewel in the Atlantic Ocean. No.3 Stocks Cottages - Tony Knight
Просмотров 4227 лет назад
Across the road from my home is a tiny 18th century building that, amazingly, provides homes for three families. While I initially began work to create a documentary about the building, the people that live there were too fascinating to ignore. Tony Knight lives in No.3 and applies his scientific and artistic background to recreating lost skills.

My thoughts: Ulvritone/Newbury was on the edge of the wide marshy bog which was the Kennet pre- conquest and impossible or at least very difficult to cross there. William the bastard, having come up from Winchester via the downs and wayfarers walk , crossed the kennet west at Hamstead marshall where the river was narrower and planted at least one castle there to guard the crossing, headed north then cut up to Wallingford and then London having wasted large areas behind him to cow the saxons. The mound at speen may have been slightly later to dominate the east west roman road and the track that runs past Donnington castle site and up to Oxford and Ermin street.
