    I’ve lived in Chile for almost 15 years and travel regularly to the coast from Santiago and I’ve never been asked for any form of ID when boarding a bus to Valpo, not sure why that was the experience in your case. As for the Metro I’d disagree with classifying it as “dangerous” for tourists, although taking basic precautions to avoid pickpockets is recommended for anyone riding the Metro here. One tip that I would recommend when buying bus tickets is asking for “Ida y Vuelta” which is essentially buying a return ticket to and from Valparaiso, this is actually cheaper than buying tickets individually for each leg of the trip. If you are not sure about the time that you want to return to Santiago, you can ask for “vuelta en blanco” which is an open ticket, with the time and seat to be confirmed at the ticket counter before boarding. Finally, across the bay from Valparaiso is another beautiful city called Viña Del Mar which can be accessed with a quick 10|-15 min metro train ride from Valparaiso. A return ticket from Valparaiso to Santiago is also valid for use from the Viña Del Mar bus station, so a multi leg day trip is possible.

    You mentioned that several locals told you the subway can be dangerous for tourists, but I’ve never heard any tourists who have been to Chile or Chileans saying that. Why is it specifically dangerous for tourists and not Chileans? And what did they say specifically is dangerous about taking the subway? If you’re going to make a statement like this to people who are planning to visit Chile, I think you should elaborate more. I understand if many people told you that, you believe them because they’re locals and you’re visiting. Don’t mean any ill will, just genuinely trying to understand.

    • @SharingtheRoad
      @SharingtheRoad  Год назад +2

      Hi Sameer, Great Question! We traveled with smaller bags, but I don't see larger luggage being a problem. I believe that they allow you to put larger items that won't fit in the belly of the bus which is designated for storage, but I'm not 100% sure. Most buses allow this, so I'm assuming that this shouldn't be an issue. From some forums I read, this shouldn't be an issue. Do you have a trip to Valparaiso in your near future?! 😊
