I've had a Zoe for a couple of months from Onto. I only need a car for a short time. From Aug 22 mileage allowance goes down to 750 miles and prices go up. It's all very easy, although the app isn't great. They supply a key with the car. I have Instavolt and Shell chargers locally so haven't paid for charging. Mileage is carried over and you can 'buy' more miles. All in all I've happy with the deal.
I also looked into this a few weeks ago and came to all the same conclusions. To begin with I was convinced that it was certain to be an expensive rip off but in the end I could see that in some circumstances it could be attractive. I am sure that pricing will sharpen considerably as this business model develops and monthly 'carry overs' for unused mileage allowance will become the norm. Excellent video!
Thanks John Roberts, like everything nowadays, driving will become commoditised and then prices will come down. Still not a bad shout if you want to test the water on EV ownership or are between cars. Your car will come as part of your Amazon Prime membership one day I’m sure 😬😁👍
I’ve used Onto and found them really good. Hassle and commitment free motoring. The unused miles roll over to the next mount if you stay in the same car so you can build up a nice bank of miles.
Thanks for this useful comparison. The OnTo subscription will become less attractive if the free charge aspect reduces as electricity prices rise again.
I’ve looked at leasing a Tesla and some of these lower lease deals are based on waiting 9-12 months for the car to arrive and no guarantee that’s going to happen. Most are shop window deals that escalate in cost as the the sign up progresses. Cheapest equivalent spec (delivery with a week) was about £1100.
Very helpful video got me looking into subscription seriously. However, discovered that it is unworkable for me. The maximum miles you are allowed in a month is 1750, which can be made up of unused rolled over and prearranged bought. But 1750 is maximum. 2-3 times a year I go to France or Scotland and do over 2000 miles. So, folk like me can be added to your list of people for whom subscription won’t work.
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru thanks I can borrow money from myself to buy outright but I liked the simplicity of subscription. I'll probably subscribe for couple of months to decide if I want a small or medium sized car
Thanks for making the video. Might be able to convince my better half a month rental ahead of a major Tesla purchase is a great way to go. Didn’t even now this was a thing until your video. Keep up the great work - I know you put a lot of effort in and hope you get lots more clicks, likes, subs as you make good content and deserve it. 👍
Haha, thanks mate - me too! It’s like trying to push water up a hill getting the clicks and likes so appreciate your support. Follow me on the socials too mate. I would seriously consider renting an EV for a month before buying one. It’s be great to do some real world tests whilst actually living with it to see how they actually work out in reality. Keep watching brother 👍
Good video, I’m getting a Renault Zoe from ONTO just to see how electric will fit into my life cost me just under 400 and I used a discount code to knock off 50 quid.
Nice one 👍 This is a real eye opener! I live in the city centre, so having a car for a month makes sense for cramming those things in that I miss out on, without the year round expense and commitment of leasing. In April next year I was going to hire a car for a few weeks, and it ain’t cheap. So I could try an ev out for a month, and it could be cheaper, plus I’d get experience with an electric car. I’ll be looking into this… thanks Jim ✅
Thanks for another great video. I really love the concept of this as someone who has done without a car for nearly 2 years and just hire every few months for a few days. What put me off were the many bad reviews especially concerning return 'damage' fees. Seems also mileage has gone down to 750 and £99 for delivery and collection. Otherwise I would be tempted to subscribe for school holidays. Thanks again 👍
Brilliant video, v helpful as usual. Looked at the VOLVO subscription service, once I'd picked myself off the floor and looked more into the pricing setup it's seems crazy. Just can't see how it makes sense to anyone.
I live outside the UK for 6 months of the year, two months here , two months away. I’ve seriously considered subscription because I’d be paying a lease for half the year when the car is sitting on the drive.
Thanks so much for this Jim! I've been seeing so many ads lately for on.to and wondered what it was all about. I think the "EV ownership trial run" use case is an excellent example and it was on the top of my tongue before you mentioned it too. If I was taking this route I'd probably select the cheapest option of - say the Zoe in order to examine the feasibility of running an EV locally to me for the type of driving I'd be doing. The public charging element makes less sense when considering the 1000/month mileage cap as it's counter-intuitive in my opinion. I'd be very likely to return home each evening and use a home charger. It might be an idea to have the free public charging fee as an option that you can tick on a month-by-month basis alongside the ability to raise the mileage cap if you've a long trip planned for example?
Agree with your great review. Thanks it helped to sign up for an ID3 as I am waiting for a new car in December/January TBC. Don’t want to wait to sell my car then, as increase in mileage and ongoing monthly payments, will impact equity value. OnTo allows me to protect equity now. I hope to take out excess insurance also (circa £40 for an annual) to protect against paying the £1000 excess. Other videos great BTW👍
Very interesting how this subscription idea is developing. Some years down the line, when autonomous vehicles start to become available and begin to take off , I would suspect that subscription would be ideal for people living in cities, with all costs included and possible upgrades for larger vehicles when needed and even vehicle valeting, storage and charging all built in to the package. Subscription could evolve into an entirely new way of how the car industry operates.
Subscription is a great idea and affordable if you just want a small car and 750 miles is ok if you just travel locally. A bigger car like an ID.3 and if you do a couple of longer trips and need to buy extra miles turns out to be really expensive. I notice they don’t do an MG4 cos I can lease one of those for £350 a month
Insurance excess is £1000 with onto with the offer to bolt on a lower excess for £20-£40 p/month, another factor to think about. As I would like an EV but don’t have the option to charge at home because I live in an apartment, this is interesting, 1000 miles in an ID3 would cost at least £80 on a public charging network. Good video, food for thought. Thank you and keep up the good work!!
Just one more thing Jim. With the current fuel prices I put nearly £100/month of diesel in my Merc (it therefore "recharges" in about five minutes - but we'll not get into that lol). If I add insurance and road tax (and MB servicing 😳😳) then £350 (ish) quid to hire an EV each month starts to make sense a little bit. The driving experience wouldn't quite compare obviously but we might all have to look at whether luxuries are going to be financially sustainable vs actually having personal transport? These are "fascinating" times indeed.
This car subscription "thing" seems to be steadily taking hold Jim. A little while back I saw (I think) an offer from the AA - or was it the RAC? - for a new Corsa E for around £15 a day. From memory, the minimum commitment was a month, and you could if you wished, swap the car each month for another make or model. Could suit some people very well. Could be particularly useful if you were seriously considering a particular EV, because you could actually live with one for a whole month before you committed to buying or leasing. (I typed that last line before you mentioned this in your video!)
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru so VW now offer you to buy the car at the end of a contract hire. My question is would it be better to buy it after the contract hire or pcp
