  • The 2020 coronavirus outbreak isn’t the first time a pandemic has hit Colorado. The flu of 1918, also known as the Spanish Flu, hit the state particularly hard. It’s estimated that the 1918 flu killed an estimated 8,000 Coloradans. The poorly named Spanish Flu is thought to have started in Kansas near the Colorado border, which put the Centennial State near ground zero.
Although it’s important to note that the coronavirus is not a strain of influenza, similar strategies were used to help flight the flu pandemic. Colorado shut down schools and banned events with large numbers of people. We talked with two historians to see how the two pandemics compare.

we learned nothing from the spanish flu outbreak because its the same here. now were trying to do catch up. the fear is this happening over and over again. he who doesnt learn from the past is doomed to make the same mistakes over again.

I think we’re lucky that COVID-19 isn’t as deadly as Spanish Flu, let’s just hope it doesn’t mutate

The Spanish flu actually ended because the virus mutated to a less lethal version. Hopefully that happens with Corona as well. Otherwise it will just continue to explode

Coronavirus actually may be more deadly.. The Spanish Flu had a death rate of 2.5% which is similar to Coronavirus. And it killed 50 million people before it was done. Not trying to scare you but its just facts.

I wouldn’t doubt COVID-19 is just as scary as the Spanish flu. The difference is we have modern commodities to help slow it down, they didn’t. 😬
